A unique item called the sacred mallet is found here, and at some point in your WoW life, you’re going to want to get it. It is used to create the mallet of Zul'Farrak, which, in turn is used to summon a boss in Zul'Farrak. The quest associated with this boss gives the carrot on a stick (increases mount speed 3%). This trinket is likely to stay in your inventory for the rest of the game, unless the burning crusade has changed that.

So... there are some pretty confusing posts, but the short of it is this: You kill a guy (not in an instance) to get the mallet. Look at the sacred mallet page (below) for where it is, and how hard it’s going to be. You go somewhere else nearby (also not in an instance) and use the mallet to create a new mallet (the mallet of Zul’Farrak). That's the one you carry into Zul'Farrak instance. When the mallet of Zul’Farrak is used at a gong in the Zul’Farrak instance, you summon Zahz’rilla, who you have to kill to complete the quest Gahz’rilla, which gives you the carrot on a stick trinket.

Of course, to get the actual quest, you'll need to start the quest chain first.

Step 1 - visit Ironforge, talk to Clockmort Spannerspan in Tinker Town Area. He'll give you the quest "The Brassboltz Brothers"

Step 2 - Go to Shimmering Flats in Thousand Needles and talk to Wizzle Brassbolts. That'll complete the first part, and start the quest Gahz'Rilla, that rewards you with the carrot on a stick.

Step 3 - Get the sacred mallet

Step 4 - Use the sacred Mallet and turn in into the Mallet of Zul'Farrak

Step 5 - Do the instance Zul'Farrak, summon Gahz'Rilla, kill 'im, return quest, do your happy dance.

The easy path to The Hinterlands for Horde....

At the time of this posting taking this route avoided having to pass right by the Alliance outpost as well as any high level mobs. I wrote down detailed specifics of my journey but to summarize go to Thandol Span, jump in the water and swim towards Hinterlands :)

Detailed version is as follows:

* Fly to Arathi Highlands Hammerfall.

* Head towards Thandol Span before you reach it you will see a bridge to the left, crossing it you will end up around 48, 88.

* Continue past the dark iron bombardiers (dwarf npcs) and you will see a path leading down to the water.

* Swim east to the Forbidding Sea, hug the zone side if you go too far out you will get fatigued.

* Around 89, 77 you can walk back up on land for a bit, there is a farm there but it appears to be a half finished area and is only populated with a level 15 dwarven farmer.

* After you pass the farm, head back into the water now and you will be swimming north now towards The Hinterlands (again hug the wall side to avoid fatigue).

* You will arrive at the south end of The Hinterlands right near the horde outpost of Revantusk Village.

Despite that the area is a level 45-50 area, I came here at level 40 and it got me to 44. Just stick close to Aeire Peak. There are level 41-42 wolves just outside Aeire Peak.

There are also some great quests here. They're not very hard but will get you tons of XP.

As of patch 2.3, all of the mobs in Jintha'Alor are no longer elite, so the quests that involve going there can be done solo, since they are no longer considered group quests.

For any hordes traveling to the hinterlands from Tarren Mill, theres a lvl 55-65 dwarf guard on the road and hes hostile. So if you want to avoid dying I advise traveling on the grass :<

This is a beautiful zone, terrific Mithril mining if you stick to the edges of the map (but avoid Seradane), fun, easy, rewarding quests for levels 43-50 both Alliance and Horde. Great zone! :)

This is a great area for mining mithril and even some small amounts of thorium ^^. And it looks gorgeous too :) I leveled up from 40 to 45 in no time in this area, and the quest rewards are awsome as well.

It is also possible to reach the Hinterlands from Western Plaguelands:

If you make your way north along the banks of the river east of Southshore, you'll find yourself meandering out of Hillsbrad, through the Alterac Mountains, to where the river eventually feeds into Darrowmere Lake. Head east along the south shore of the lake to 65,86 (or approximately halfway between the spur jutting north into the lake and the bridge leading out to Scholomance). This is the mouth of Plaguemist Ravine, which leads north into the Hinterlands.

Mining - There is alot of mithril here, few iron, gold, truesilver and even small thorium ores too. Like most ore spots i persume, you can find the them around hills, the mountains and in caves.

Anyone know what's in the little mountained-off area east of Seradane? I remember swimming up the coast for, oh, probably half an hour trying to find a way up there. Is it just one of those little areas, like the far west of Tirisfal Glades or the "airport" in Dun Morogh, that Blizzard never got around to developing, or something? The trolls here drop Wildvine, which is a fairly rare and valuable mat in my server (Thunderlord.) They are selling for about 1.2g per vine in the ah, or 12g per 10 wildvine. The drop rate is fairly low though, no more than one for 20 kills. I found four doing all the troll quests in the Hinterlands (alliance).

For you guys who, just like me, couldn't find an innkeeper (even though you made a tracking on the mini-map): the innkeeper is actually deep inside the Wildhammer Keep!

You have a Quest to kill every single creature: Wolves, Gryphons, 3 types of trolls, Owlbeasts, Turtles, Blood Elves, etc.

Awesome leveling zone for horde characters. I did STV from 36 to around lvl 45, then did some quests in Swamp of Sorrows, wich really gives a nice amount of quests wich are quite easy to do. After that I headed to Dustwallow Marsh, they also have greats quests there, and really easy to do since there are two flightpaths to travel between, making it a fast lvl or 2. Only headed to Hinterlands at lvl48, and was able to fly past lvl49 and 50, 60% into lvl50 already, and I still have like 5 quests to do here, really an awesome zone. After hinterlands, Ungoro, Ferelas, and Ashenvale are good zones to try aswell for lvl50-55.

A thing worth mentioning about the horde quests in their village. There are very few chains (i myself got none, but probably just missed it). So, pick up ALL quests, do you thing, come back and you're done. Very simple.

Jintha'Alor has plenty of Purple Lotus and is great for levelling Herbalism from 210-235, then you can go do laps around the Hinterlands to level it up even more!

For both horde and alliance there is infact a forge for both. Just took me awhile to find it. For other confused alliance, just go up the hill left of the High Thane and go into that building. There is a forge and a anvil for you.

I spent an hour on my mount and was finally able to get on top of the mountains in the uncharted area! I went all the way around the rim, and it was a valley with DEAD vertical cliffs. There is absolutely NOTHING in the valley... not even green coloring for the valley floor. I decided that if I could get to the top on mount, it would be a sinch with a wisp... so I jumped in (and died, of course). I then spent the next 2 hours trying to get back to where my body was, so I could resurrect. NO DICE! I could not get up there without a mount.

Moral of the story is, don't waste your time trying to get there... there's nothing to see. Curiosity killed this cat.

The riding crop change was done by Blizzard since they wanted to remove mount speed bosst itemsat level 80. This change applies to the Riding Crop, Carrot on a Stick, Enchant gloves - riding, and mithril spurs.

Second off, why are we discussing the riding crop on the Hinterlands page?

There is a winding path back up through the cliffs to get off the beach, which can be hard to spot if you didn't use it to come down, It's south of the waterfall, about halfway down the beach, roughly level with the entrance area of Jintha Alor

Yeah, I know for sure there is a forge here for aliance. Can't say the same about horde tho, havn't levelled my preist high enough to enter yet.
As for where it's located; as you go up to the gryphon, there is a circular building to the left. Much like the forge found in the first dwarf town inside Dun Morugh, except it's totally deserted inside.

Go up the coastline about half way. It's just beyond one of the ruins. Try after each one and if there is a path that leads up take it. I had to search for it after I knew the coords for it. <gr>

There is a repair man upstairs in Windhammer Keep. He is a blacksmith back in a corner by himself. You will also see an Innkeeper upstairs too. He walks back and forth in room with several bunk beds. I made it my home for awhile.

Make your way to Durnhold Keep which is SE of Tarren Mill (east of the river). Don't enter the Keep, but follow its stone walls directly to the back then slightly head northwards until you see 2 Grphons. There will be a narrow path that'll continue to lead you all the way to Aerie Peak (the Alliance town).

This is definetley the best 40-50 zone in the game. If u dont wanna grind 40-45 here go to Tarnaris to quest through those 5 lvls. Make sure to come back here at 45 though, quests r really fun! In 1 I got to escort a robotic chicken!

The path is located @ Hinterlands 76.61

If you do not have an addon that shows coordinates then just try looking for the path after the fourth or fifth set of ruins to your left while heading north from the village.

The master leatherworking trainer is here.

To find the armour repair person, he is on the same floor as the innkeeper in Wildhammer Keep... to get up there, find the room with the warmachines on the ground floor, and go through a (shorter-looking) doorway (two different doorways lead to same place) and up the stairs.

I tried this the other day with my lvl 40 Shaman, no fuss, no muss. Fly to Arathi Highlands Hammerfall. Run south to Thandol Span and jump down. There's an outcropping on the west side of it so you can jump half way, then the rest. If you miss just run to your corpse and rez down there.

Water walk or swim your way to the sea and then up the coast. Just keep away from the depths. No high level monsters anywhere. You come from the south into Raventusk Village.

Apparently, I forgot how to get to the Hinterlands, so I decided to go to Hammerfall, go south to the waterfall and jump off. As I type this message, I'm swimming to Hinterlands. It's like a 10 minute swim.

There is a flight path located at exactly 11,46 in Aerie Peak. It is at the top of a series of concrete looking ramps. You can't miss them. Just head to the very top and you will find the flight master. I hope this helps.

Pre TBC it was just Hyjal and it was supposedly unaccessable. After TBC was relased Hyjal Summit, a level 70 raid instance, was created. Once you hit 70 you can go through the Caverns Of Time in Tanaris to a cave where there are entrances to three different instances (Old Hillsbrad Foothills, A.K.A Durnholde, Black Morass, and Hyjal Summit.) This is where you can go to Hyjal Summit if you are in a raid group. There may be other ways to get to Hyjal or Hyjal Summit other than through the Caverns of Time, but this is the only way that I know of.

P.S. This is a 25 man raid

For all the people wondering about the dragons..There is a world boss that spawns in there. I forget the name(s), pre-bc raiding guilds used to hunter them down for epic farming or just the gear they drop. There is a use for them. Now you know.

as a hordie i love this place cuz every time i leave the horde city, i find quite a bit of mithril and other stuff along the way. as u walk around, u will find tons more mithril. in my questing, i mined 2 sets of mithril, 9 gold, 10 true silver and a lil bit of thorium. the quests here r really easy and profitable for me. Go there at around 46-48. wat i did was go to STV from 40-44. Then i went to feralas 44-46. Tanaris 44-48. Then here im at 49 right now, almost hit 50 but i havent done the Jintha'alor quests which r really nice since u get blues and its non-elite since 2.3. But still doing the Jintha'alor quest with someone else is a good idea cuz the mobs r pretty bunched up. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME PLACE!

Alliance : Flight path and vendors at Aerie peak, in the north west area of the map, mainly ran by wildhammer dwaves.

Horde: Flight path and many vendors at Revantusk village on the coast, in the south eastern area of the map, mainly ran by trolls.

Zone has a nice level progression travelling form west to east, starting at 41 with wolves and ending with 50-51 turtles on the caost. Jintha'alor is a large rebel troll town with nice qesusts and plenty of kills, easy enough now its not elite at lvl's 48-50.

Not a great deal here for alliance, im afraid, a few quests, but not a great deal, plus rep rewards go to 'wildhammer dwarves' at present, theres no real use for that reputation.
Not real bonuses in anything really: alliance better of in feralas, tanaris or even searing gorge when lvl45.

For Horde, this is a great place, plenty of quests, including humanoid and beast targets (tailoring and skinning, etc). Some great quest items here include a trinket for 50 attack power (passive) and a +15/20 skill fishing pole.

I'm a level 44 Undead Priest and I just wanted to check if quests in The Hinterlands would be good for me to solo. I've been the Tanaris, but quests there are too difficult for me to solo. A friend of mine, a level 45 Shaman, told me that Ferelas would be too difficult for me as it is even too difficult for him.

i cant figure out how to get into the hinterlands, im a lvl 48 pala so im high enough lvl but i cant see a way thru the hills unless you go really close to undercity. please sum1 help!

You get to the Hinterlands by going through Hillsbrad Foothills. There is a gap in the mountains just north of Dunholde Keep.

The inn keeper for alliance is at Aerie Peak, which is near where you enter the zone. The inn keeper is inside Wildhammer Keep. Go into the keep, turn left, then turn right before you get to the dwarf Doran Steelwing, turn left and walk past the tanks. At the back of the keep you will then find some stairs. Climb these and go straight ahead for the inn keeper (go right for repair bloke).

I don't know if anyone else has heard rumors of the next expansion after WOTLK, but I've heard of it being the Emerald Dream and I think this might be the place that summons you there, much like the portal to outlands in the blasted lands, seeing how it's covered by elite green (dream) dragons and a huge one guards it, but I don't know the significance of the huge tree though.

You can also get there from West Plaguelands. There's a path on the shore of Darrowmere Lake. It's slightly west of the bridge to Caer Darrow.

Just in case anyone's looking, I had a heck of a time finding someone to repair my equipment - there is one NPC that can.

Enter the Inn by the right hand door, take the first doorway on your left (watch carefully, it's relatively easy to miss). Turn to your right, and walk between the Ballistas to the left hand doorway in front of you. Go up the flight of stairs, exit the doorway and keep walking straight ahead.

Hope this might save someone a small amount of frustration!

I tried to run past the guarding dragonkin elites to make it up to ramp. The plan was to take a bit of damage, then bubble up so I could run up the ramp unhindered. Of course, that didn't work when I was one-shotted. One-shot... a 45 paladin one-shot. 2250 HPs and nearly 3000 armor meant nothing. Damn, these guys hit for a lot.

this is a possible future instance area , there are mobs of 3 or more lvl 60 or above eiltes and 2 lvl 60 or above dragons ( 1 roaming 1 guarding ) , i got past the guarding dragon to a instance but when i ran through it nothing happened = ( , i want to get some guildies and see if we can kill those dragons . this plce is guarded by many high level green dragons (nature dragons) there is a large portal up a ramp which i think will eventualy lead to the emerald dream (with other portals in feralas and Ashenvale among other camps of green dragons.

Quite a disappointing zone for alliance... You'd expect a fair amount of quests with such a huge keep (and bunker) from the WIldhammer Clan, a heroic questline against the trolls of the region, but nope... a few quests and you are done here...
