To get this achievement, you need to touch 20 of the floating orbs in the area without stepping on runes or getting hit by the frostburn. The trick to this for those without flyers, or those seeking to do this before cataclysm hits, is not to try to outrun the rotating frostburns but rather, wait for them to pass by standing in a corner of the island. Fortunately, you can use a mount for that extra speed boost should you find yourself trying to outrun them.

There's an even easier way to get this. Simply mount up (I did it in Ghost Wolf form, so even lvl20 mounts will work), hug one of the eyes w/o being too close (not sure if you can clip through them is all), and just circle around it. By standing so close you can actually outrun the rate that the things turn at. Then all you do is jump away to grab an orb, then pull back in to make sure that the beam doesn't catch up to you. Eventually the orbs will respawn (longest I waited was about 20 seconds) so you never have to move away from w/e eye you pick. Personally I used the one on the left when you first come out of the portal.

I did this last night without flying or without mounting up.

The key is SLOW and STEADY wins the race. Your stacks will last for a full minute before you have to hit the next orb, so you don't have to rush. There are many spots along the outer edge were you can stand along the edge and not get hit by the spiraling ice clouds. Take a second before you really try the achieve and get comfortable with these spots. Track the achieve. I never once went towards the middle or towards one of the eyes, I hugged the edge the whole time. Don't get greedy and try to get one of the orbs that are not on the edge, cause that's when I would get screwed up. There is plenty of time on the buff to take your time and stick to the edge.

For those confused, the site is the island in the top of Azshara that has no name with it just north-east of Darnassian Base Camp. On the South-West of that island is a portal that leads to more that get you up the mountain. Don't stop on the way up or a frost ball will come down and blow up next to you throwing you down the hill.

When you get to the top, you have to click on a crystal, it will open the portal in the circle, and then you have to click the portal to enter the instance you picked. I thought that you just had to click the crystal and you got in, but you do have to then click on the portal.

HOW TO:
Shadow: Click the crystal to start it and then lead the Shadows into the platforms. The platforms will go away with each shadow that it takes, but more will show up as you go along. You can mount which makes it a lot easier.

Fire: A ball will travel from platforms that did have fire on them to other platforms. 2 will not get the balls and so will not catch on fire the next cycle. You need to run to these and /dance.

Ice: Run around a get the SMALL ice orbs that show up. Do not get hit by the frost that is going around the large orbs. Do not walk over the blue platforms or an ice spike will come out of the ground and throw you up in the air. I found the easiest is to run around the outside and hide in the pockets at the edges to wait for the frost to pass. take your time and you can get 20 in a row. Do not worry about the counter that shows up. When it hits 20 it will reset, but if it is at 15 when you get hit and then you do 20 without getting hit you can get the achievement with the counter saying 15.

Confirmed that you don't need to keep the buff on. The buff is for the quest, not the achievement. That being said, if you want to get this the easy/lazy way, simply sit behind the portal and grab the orbs that spawn on the lower right side of the first eye, over and over. Note: Make sure to check your frost burn "offset" by seeing when it hits you in relation to the ice breath. My server was lagging me about a second behind where I was, so I'd get hit a good three character widths from where the bloody effect was.

This particular achievement is a pain. Way more difficult than fiery. The frostburn is not forgiving, in fact, it probably reaches farther than it should. The key is to run from three little safe areas on the very edge of the cliff that make a circle around the ledge. Wait patiently for the frostburns to pass and make a pass from one safe zone to the next. The buff lasts a long time so do this patiently. I went counter-clockwise, but clockwise might work as well. I'm attaching a screenshot of the ledge showing the safe zones.

Oh, also, do this on your mount. 1) you'll move faster, 2) the frost orbs are a pain to activate and taking up more space helps build stacks. 3) if you hit one of the frost rings on the ground, you make a much bigger ice spike, which helps reduce the likelihood you'll get hit by frostburn when you land.

How to do on Alliance prior to Cataclysm release:

Work your way up to 67.0 89.5 in Winterspring.
Be sure to bring a priest that willing to cast levitate on you (for Icy), parachute cloak is enough to get to the firey and shadowy platforms.
Sprint or Rocketboots will also be needed, enough speed to get you to about 150% movement (Rocketboots is what was used when I did it).
At that point in Winterspring face towards the proper platform you want to get to and have the priest pop levitate on you, pop your rocket boots, and run off the cliff towards Azshara.
Pointing south will get you to the firey and shadowy platforms, facing west will get you to the icy platform.
Using some type of map mod like tomtom or carbonite to aim to the platform will help.
It takes some practice to get on them, but it can be done on Alliance. If it gets too fustrating just wait for Cataclysm to get released and simply fly up there.

Another easy way to do this, if you keep having trouble is just to LoS the icy blasts. There's a lot of places along the edge of the cliff that you can duck down into and the icy blasts from the orbs circle right over you without hitting. I was able to get 3-4 orbs between each of the spots I ducked down into.
So just track your Icy achievement to keep track of how many you've gotten without being hit and test the different places you can hide from the blasts! Easier than trying to jump over and dodge the streams.

Here is a guide for completing the Glutton For Icy Achievement for ALLIANCE engineers pre Cataclysm launch. Using the same method you can much more easily adapt and complete the Fiery and Shadowy achievements as well.

Yes, this "method" becomes obsolete in a week when we can fly in Azeroth at the Cataclysm launch. But it might be fun to try none the less. Enjoy!

Again, this only applies for the next 6 days while flying is still locked, but you can have a priest levitate you and if you use the Levitate wall-hug mechanic to get as high as you can around the mountain, you will be in range for a Death Knight to grip you to the top. The DK will need the glyph that increases the range by 5 yards, though.

Anyone else annoyed about the collision detection on this?

If I'm in the 1/3rd radius in front of the ice blast, whilst not even touching it, it's counting as a hit. But I can stand *inside* the blast if I'm approaching it from the back, and I'm completely fine.

Did this achiev. on the 2nd attempt.
Just have some things in mind

Never use those marks on the flour that launches you. You can do the achievment faster without using them. If you dont have any way to run faster than your normal speed , it may help, but if you have a hunter-friend, you will barely use em'. The whole area its like a circuit. If you never stop moving , sometimes making a brief stop for 1 sec to avoid being hit, you can do it easily with Aspect of the Pack

Did it with my druid in travel form and with my hunter with cheetah.
Obviously, if you get hit.. you will be dazed. But who cares, if you get hit, you already lost the achievement, so there is nothing you can loose.
Also, I used to wait about 1/2 sec on every sphere to get the Essence of Ice . There is No need to wait! just keep runing
Try to avoid making your attempts when the server is full of people.
With pack did it. Pretty easy (nah, not as easy as fire or shadow trials...but easy anyway)
You can do the achievment after you completed the quest :)
If your planing to start mounted... Crusader Aura :)

ps: Somehow, you can actually get some stacks, leave, even log off and wait a whole day and complete the achievment another day.
With an alt, did about 15 in a row (got hit in the 5th essence and finished the quest). Came back next day to complete the achievment, got about 5 stacks without being hit and recieved the achievment. Seems bugged :/

Extremely easy to do with the help of a Safe Spot. (There's plenty of them on the edges of the area!)

All you need to do is simply find yourself a cozy Safe Spot on the edge of the area, where the Ice Beams won't reach you, and run a few yards forward to grab a nearby orb, then straight back to your Safe Spot and wait for the orb to respawn. Rince and repeat until 20 stacks.
It'll take time, but boy it sure is easy.

Here's an example of the Safe Spot I used to do it along with the nearby Orb Spawn Spots marked with red dots.

First try, I did it the way the devs probably wanted all first tries to be like-- madly squawking, running around the ice orbs willy-nilly and trying to get everything without stopping even once. Obviously, that didn't work. Second try, I stayed at a safe spot on the cliffside near the orb on your right as you enter-- don't fall down --and picked off orbs as they spawned. Then I got erratic and when I hit around 14/20, I tried getting the rest of them really quickly. That failed because I neglected to realize the hitbox or the ice floes are actually much bigger than they look. Finally, on my nineteenth try, I stayed at a safe spot and damn well stayed there to pick off the orbs. It took a while, but friggin' hell if I was going to go through all that again.

Stand to the left of the portal, grab the 1-2 orbs that spawn right in front of you. Go back to left of portal and wait for respawns. Do this again and again, until you have all 20. FYI you CAN allow the debuff to drop off you and still collect the orbs and get the achievement. Patience is the key with this one. Also for any warlocks doing it, you can use your voidwalkers bubble to absorb the damage if you find yourself in a tight spot. But it was easier to mount and just collect 1-2 at a time.

I did is using my flying mount. I just tracked the achievement and looked at that count ignoring the buff I had.
Just fly up pick a spot that you think is save. It will take some time and patience but in the end I got the achievement easier. I tried it several times walking and using riding mounts but all fail!

So use flying mount if you can!

Good news for Alliance players...I just got all three achievements. The three trial zones are as follows:

The Trial of Fire: 33, 23.5
The Trial of Frost: 62.2, 21.1
The Trial of Shadow: 31.1, 26.8

...then just start doing the trial. No quest, nothing, just start playing. I turned on the tracking for each achievement as I was doing them, and completed all three in about ten minutes flat. Note that to start the Shadow trial, you have to click a crystal at the trial area (it's marked); the other two, just do it.

Knowing the locations as I do now, I'd probably start at the Shadow zone and work my way east.

Also, not knowing that I didn't need to use the portal to get to the zones, I went back to the island with the crystals each time and clicked on the corresponding one before going to each trial zone. So if they don't work for you, try that.

I did this as an alliance character on a flying mount. I just flew around the edges grabbing easy orbs. as an alliance character, you don't need the quest for the achievement. Just run around and grab what you need too. :]

I just wanted to confirm that IF you are alliance, you can still complete this achievement (along with shadow and ice) even though there is no quest for it. The only way I know to complete it is to have a flying mount (as mentioned above). There are videos above that also show how to do it. The locations are a little tricky, especially post cat when coords addon's are not working.

ice is southeast of arcane pinnacle on the map. it looks like a crater right next to the water but it's really a spire type mountian.

fire and shadow are really close to one another, almost directly west of the ice trial. they are actually part of the mountain range that divides hyjal from azs. look more towards the lower portion of the mountain range, due west of the ice trials. they are on platforms on the lower part of the mountain.

once again, you get the achievement but you don't get the quests that lead to these trials.

Didn't really read through all the comments for this one, but if you can fly here, here's a super easy way to do it:

mount up, and hover just far enough above the ground, so you don't get hit by the frost, but close enough so you can see the orbs. Press and hold the left mouse button, and aim the camera so it's pointing straight down on you, and hold it there. Fly over to an orb, wait til the path is clear, push x to land and spacebar to fly up again quick, you just have to touch it for it to count. Rinse and repeat. Took a few tries to get used to the paths of the eyes, but it worked like a charm!

I also used my flying mount. I picked the Headless Horseman's Reins because it's a low profile mount and you don't have wings/tail flapping around blocking your view. Ignore how many "debuffs" you have... just watch your achievement counter. Don't go for the orbs in the middle... just fly around on the outside snipping the ones on the edge.

Also, if you fly too far away and loose your debuff don't worry; just look at your counter! It's still going.

For Alliance players:

You cant use portal on island loc 55,14 its for Horde only!

Instead you need to fly directly to the achievement areas. (I did not check if you can ride/run to there. Locations are up in the mountains)

First you need to go Shadow achie area at location 31, 27.5
Start achievement by clicking the stone.

Rest achies you just need to enter to start them.
Locations:
Frost: 62, 21
Fire: 33, 23.5

As near as I can tell you don't actually need to speak with Archmage Xylem. Just go to 56.0,12.0 in Azshara, click on a crystal, then enter the created portal. However as of this post the portal seems to be bugged, because I was unable to enter them once they were created... so I flew to all the spots. By flying to all the events you don't need to worry about clicking the crystals at the initial point as they are simply there for a transporation mechanic.

Glutton for Icy Punishment : is located @ 62.1, 21.3 - Pick up the frost orbs, stay off the ice runes, and avoid the frost breath/spray/sprinker thingies (yes it's highly technical term...)

Glutton for Fiery Punishment : is located @ 32.9, 23.4 - Follow Darwin as he dances from circle to circle avoiding the fire runes.

Glutton for Shadowy Punishment : is located @ 31.2, 26.6 - Click the large shadow crystal, it will spawn mobs from the shadow gates, the mobs will make a straight line to you, drag them accross the shadow runes.

And if you are like me and a total failure at not taking damage...here is what i did. I hid behind the portal thing until the frost passed then run out and grab an orb and go back and wait. It took forever, but it worked and I was a lot less frustrated.

Three main things about how to do this:

1) The main objective here is to get under a ball of frost and jump. You will get a buff for each ball counting toward a stack of 20. Avoid the frost plumes (they remind me of the kind of rotating sprinklers we used to have as a kid and we'd try to jump over them so as not to get wet). They sweep from about 3 central foci. The frost plumes are sort of blurry and indefinite, so you might find that sometimes you should get frostburn (but you dont) and vice versa. So you will probably lose your stacks even if you think you were far away because you didn't see the frostburn.

2) Do use your flier. The smaller flier the better (I used a Celestial Steed) since you have to hit the frost ball right under your head/back to score, and you cannot scroll close (to get a better view) or you may get hit by a frost plume. I tried using my Phosphorescent drake for a while, but it took too long to get under the ball and I'd fail to see a plume heading my way.

Once you position your mount under the frost ball, JUMP. You can't get this achievement by flying through the frost balls. You have to land, then jump up which sadly, after all these posts, NO ONE has been very clear about.

3) Use patience. There will be some distractions. First watch out for the silly goblin NPC running around. She often will take a ball you were going for. Just refocus if she does that and don't worry about her. Also some of your balls will be close to a focus of a frost plume so be prepared to fly. If you don't hit the target and have to go down, just be patient and wait for all frost plumes to sweep out of your way. Sometimes a ball you need will be in the path of two frost plumes. Just wait.

As for the safe spot method, I tried it and it was too time consuming, plus I died from getting to close to the edge. I seriously don't think the frost balls spawn often enough for me to try that and I still lost the buff from frost damage anyway. But if my method doesn't work, better try hers.

All this info on where it is and what to do - blah, blah, blah, blah - is all fine & dandy, but one simple question; how do you avoid FROSTBURN (or whatever it's called)...?

If it's taking too long between balls, then it would be invaluable to know that over & above anything else...!

Too many people repeating the obvious & previously stated - not enough people giving useful tactical information...

FYI - Frostburn (or whatever the heck it's called) is a random kick-in & has little or nothing to do with timing between orbs or frost clouds or the 'runes' on the floor - the runes spawn spikes that throw you in the air.

The best advice i can offer is to use a flying mount, fly a bit above the orb u want and wait until the frost spray is in the opposite direction, go down and then fly back up when u get the orb, it's slow, but it can be done.

To access the Trials as a non-flying Alliance character:

You can easily get to the Arcane Pinnacle which is the location for the portal to each Trial. At 52.75, 18.0 there is a path which leads down to the water. Follow the path, swim aross to the island, and at 55.37, 15.03 you will find the first of the transporters (it's in the water just below a ledge on which an NPC paths around). You must use this transporter as you cannot reach the ledge. To be clear these transporters do not port you, they jump you onwards to the next ledge; you need only stand on them to activate them. They appear as small glowing circles on the ground.

As soon as you use the first transporter and land on the first ledge Ice Bolts start being flung down at you. Keep moving. The transporters will jump you around and up the side of the Pinnacle until you find yourself at the top. Archmage Xylem is there with 4 apprentices. The goblin apprentice is also a vendor but does not offer repair services. The top also houses the portal with 3 coloured crystals beside it (red, blue, purple). You click a crystal to activate one of the trials and then click the portal to be sent to that trial. Once you have completed a trial, or wish to leave it, you click the portal at the trial and will be returned to the Pinnacle.

Unfortunately there is no set of transporters or portals to take you back down the Pinnacle, nor is there a clear jump to the water down below. You will just have to drop down to the ledges.

The hitbox for the frost effect is not contained with the the frost clouds. Or, to be clear, the hitbox is in the frost where it emerges from the orb, but is farther in front of the frost the farther it gets are from the orb. The hitbox is like an invisible bar which emerges from the same point at which the frost jets out of the orbs. This is why you can be quite far ahead of the frost clouds and still get hit, but sometimes be in the clouds, behind the leading edge, and not get hit at all.

It is frustrating because we need graphic clues to inform our timing. To make this achievement less likely to be frustrating and more likely to be fun, it might be preferable for the frost clouds to be slightly smaller, shoot out at a higher rate, fly faster, but also fade away faster. That would help the frost effects better indicate where the hitbox is (a straight line, coming straight out of the orb, instead of these vague scythe shapes). Maybe something more like the firewall or lightning walls in Heroic Deadmines.

edit: The orbs are solid and fade when you bump into them. But they can stop you or knock you sideways when you are running.

re: flying mounts: It does not appear to be possible to collect orbs while actually flying. I tested by passing through orbs several times and was unable to get the credit for that.

Best recommendation is to get on a flying mount, turn your camera straight down, and hover directly above an orb. After the frost wave passes by, click off your mount and drop through the orb. If that doesn't get it, jump up once into the orb, then remount and fly up and over to the next orb.

First off I just completed this achievement on my Headless Horseman's Mount . I also had to go to the island where the starting portal was in Azshara 55,12 and had to click the crystals for each portal.

The thing to understand about this achievement there is two types of Orbs. Three big ones in the middle (spraying out frost cloud) and the smaller ghostly ones scattered around. These smaller one are the one you are require to stand/land under and jump/fly up to collect a stack.

Also there is two stack counters (which stuffed me up at the start). One the has a stack count and a debuff timer (which comes up in your debuff bar and really doesn't matter) and the achievement stack count (which you should be enabled/ticked from you achievements TAB). The achievement counter is the stack counter you need to worry about for this achievement as the two counters go out of sync

How you collect the Orbs, well really is up to you and I am pretty sure you will work out a sequence fairly quick.

I personally don't find the flying mount way of doing this the easiest. After run all around the little island jumping and collecting orbs the first time I realized, that was a mess.

1. Just simply run around the edge of the area.
2. Never run in the middle.
3. If you don't think you can run around one of the larger orbs without getting hit, don't.
4. Let the frost cloud pass you by moving to the edge of the area and waiting for it to pass you.
5. Don't worry bout the apprentice taking your orbs, they re-spawn quickly and the 50-60secs you get refreshes whenever you hit a new orb.
6. USE PATIENCE.

For those that dont know where to go for this achievment - In azshara, there is a little round island to the north. Fly there and then there is 3 crystals and a portal. You can get to all 3 zones this way and get your achievs!

Like the person below says, mount up, run around outside, take your time. Easy once you get going. i kept getting hit by the ice sprays, just stay as close to the edge and nip in to get the orbs.

Mount up. Fly around the edge only. Stay close. The circling ice fog cannot hit you. If you land you risk a frost spike so don't land. The fog part is only in a plane low to the ground so fly just above it and drop just enough to contact the orbs for the buff you need. Don't attempt to grab orbs from the middle because fog will get you unless you are good or lucky or both. If done right you move very little just above the plane of the fog.

Just done this. Took about 5 attempts. Few things that made it possible...

1. Use a flying mount if you can

2. Set Particle Density to ultra

3. Only go for orbs at the edge

4. Wait for the beams "tail" to be the OPPOSITE side. The tail is longer than you think

5. Be patient. The debuff you get means nothing. Set the achievement to track and take your time.
