Go to the foot of a mountain in the water around 55,14 and swim up to a little portal in the water by the edge of the mountain. It'll jump you up to the next plateau on the mountain. Do this about 7-8 times until you reach the top of the mountain. Watch out for balls of frost that come down and explode; if you're near them they'll knock you off the mountain when they explode. Once you reach the top you'll see three little orbs - one for frost, one for shadow, and one for fire. Click one of them and then click the portal to begin the achievement.

You can mount while doing this achievement. Mounting with a 100% speed mount allows you to run faster than the spawns themselves, which makes kiting them into the runes trivial.

Note that this achievement can be attained by lasting through 20 consecutive spirit attacks, and does not have to be done within one "attempt" as of the current patch (11-23-2010).

I completed the quest with 15 in a row without damage, and started it up again to get the last 5 and got the achievement.

For those confused, the site is the island in the top of Azshara that has no name with it just north-east of Darnassian Base Camp. On the South-West of that island is a portal that leads to more that get you up the mountain. Don't stop on the way up or a frost ball will come down and blow up next to you throwing you down the hill.

When you get to the top, you have to click on a crystal, it will open the portal in the circle, and then you have to click the portal to enter the instance you picked. I thought that you just had to click the crystal and you got in, but you do have to then click on the portal.

HOW TO:
Shadow: Click the crystal to start it and then lead the Shadows into the platforms. The platforms will go away with each shadow that it takes, but more will show up as you go along. You can mount which makes it a lot easier.

Fire: A ball will travel from platforms that did have fire on them to other platforms. 2 will not get the balls and so will not catch on fire the next cycle. You need to run to these and /dance.

Ice: Run around a get the SMALL ice orbs that show up. Do not get hit by the frost that is going around the large orbs. Do not walk over the blue platforms or an ice spike will come out of the ground and throw you up in the air. I found the easiest is to run around the outside and hide in the pockets at the edges to wait for the frost to pass. take your time and you can get 20 in a row. Do not worry about the counter that shows up. When it hits 20 it will reset, but if it is at 15 when you get hit and then you do 20 without getting hit you can get the achievement with the counter saying 15.

If you're a high-level hunter, the achievement's almost automatic; just put your pet on aggressive and stick to the edges. You'll rack up kills as spirits get taken out by the runes near the portals, and your pet will kill the ones who get too close to you.

For the shadow achievement, a REALLY easy way to get it is to have a friend with you KILL any mob that gets by your last line of defense. You WILL get credit for the achieve, and you WILL find it EXTREMELY easy.

For the Fire: Don't be a noob. Just watch out and follow the guy on the pad. He's NEVER wrong.

For the Ice: go to the back corner and just grab 1-3 orbs whenever it's safe, it'll take you about 6 minutes in total, and DON'T get greedy, 1 at a time is still good, the buff lasts a full minute, and refreshes after EVERY orb so an orb a minute gets you your achievement.

not seen this mentioned, but what i did as a feral druid was to stand around for a couple minutes till i had 20-30 shades attacking me, then usd dash to run away, kited them all over 1 rune and got credit for 19 all at once

Here is a guide for completing the Glutton For Icy Achievement for ALLIANCE engineers pre Cataclysm launch. Using the same method you can much more easily adapt and complete the Fiery and Shadowy achievements as well.

Yes, this "method" becomes obsolete in a week when we can fly in Azeroth at the Cataclysm launch. But it might be fun to try none the less. Enjoy!

All these posts are moot in less than a week, but as a priest you can use the "creative use" of levitate mechanics to levitate hug the wall from Winterspring chair spot all the way down to the shadowy plateau, then use it to get to the fire plateau as well. I actually levitated down all the way to the fire plateau since you can see it from the chair spot and had to go all the way up to Winterspring and back down.

Do note that you come dangerously close to hitting the Hyjal border while doing this but you don't get teleported, your map changes to Darkwhisper Gorge but you don't get the zone text in the middle of your screen.

I found a VERY easy way to do this achievement is by standing behind the middle portal, gathering up 20 of the mobs (by just standing still) and then running away to where about 3 shadow traps cross your path. They will get trapped in multiple numbers.
I was doing this as a Retribution Paladin so I had 15% increased run speed, not sure if 8% from Tuskarr's Vitality is enough though.

The Real Point is STAYING CLOSE TO ALTAR!

1- Click on altar,
2- Move a little close to far right portal ( just don't pass through the traps)
3- Run (not backwards) back to altar,
4- Change your position as long as they come.

This one is actually a lot easier than the frost one.

* VERY USEFUL TIP: Actually i figured it accidentally, but we can say it's not a bug or glitch.

The 20 stacks without getting hit counts anyway, if you get hit in 12th stack, you get dropped to 11th, but still you can finish it by making it 20. Which gives you 9 perfect stacks.
Now you can finish the quest(or achi run) and use the altar again, which makes a lot easier to get 20 because the first 10 shadows are spawning slowly.

I finally got this one in a very easy way.
Stand by the portal zoomed all the way out. Just kill anything that does not have a a trap in its path.

i went to the opposite side of the portal and wait to have 20 of those on me then i blinked towards the portal because there is like 5 spheres in a line and a single sphere can nuke more than one shadow at a time and voila done

The portal is bugged for alliance but the achievement is not.

Solo'd as Druid. I say solo'd just because some of the comments talk about pets and friendly players and blah blah, but here's what I did-- basically, right as I got out of the portal, I started up the crystal, and then stood at the altar for all the spirits to come out. Then I just stood there for the entire thing, casting Moonfire on the spirits that didn't have runes right in their paths. That way, I didn't have to do any running, and I didn't have to mount up or chase my own shadow. After a few minutes, I had my twenty stacks.

Much easier than what I tried first-- mounting up and running around the runes.

I can't stress enough how important it is to simply kill the shades that aren't directly aligned with a rune when they spawn. That way, you aren't overwhelmed by numbers, you keep a safe distance, and you don't have to rely upon an inconsistent trapping system. Killing the 'inconveniently' placed shades makes this very, very easy.

Easily done by any class with a permanent combat pet (it needs to be higher level, enough that it can one-shot the mobs). Sit in the middle by the crystal, don't move, and keep the pet on aggressive. Anything that gets past the runes will be close enough to aggro the pet, which will then proceed to kill it before it spoils the achievement.

With a flying mount, this was pretty easy. Mount up immediately after clicking the altar and just stay there and wait for them. If any of them get too close for comfort or they don't step on a rune on their way towards you, just fly up a yard or two and hover for a second. They turn around and go back in their portals. You have to be touching the ground for them to come out of the portals or for them to get caught in the rune traps, so you can't stay in the air the whole time.
I tried a few other methods but I found this to be the easiest since you never get overwhelmed by a lot of them coming at once. As soon as you leave the ground the area clears out again. Took a little patience but it was very easy.

This is the only one thats not doable without upgrading your account. Tried to do this on a RAF account and there is no altar to click on the ledge. On the other ones there atleast were that infamous little "blue and white" cube. Guess i wont be getting my hat :/

I just wanted to confirm that IF you are alliance, you can still complete this achievement (along with shadow and ice) even though there is no quest for it. The only way I know to complete it is to have a flying mount (as mentioned above). There are videos above that also show how to do it. The locations are a little tricky, especially post cat when coords addon's are not working.

ice is southeast of arcane pinnacle on the map. it looks like a crater right next to the water but it's really a spire type mountian.

fire and shadow are really close to one another, almost directly west of the ice trial. they are actually part of the mountain range that divides hyjal from azs. look more towards the lower portion of the mountain range, due west of the ice trials. they are on platforms on the lower part of the mountain.

once again, you get the achievement but you don't get the quests that lead to these trials.

**note about shadow achievement**

you don't have to get 20 in a row. you can kill the ones with long range spells/attacks and go another round if you don't get up to 20. i did this in 2 rounds. i got overwhelmed in round 1 and killed them with a point blank aoe.

This was the easiest of the three for me. As an 85 rogue I just stood near the portal and let most of them kill themselves. Any that got too close met a Fan of Knives (AoE) death.

For Alliance players:

You cant use portal on island loc 55,14 its for Horde only!

Instead you need to fly directly to the achievement areas. (I did not check if you can ride/run to there. Locations are up in the mountains)

First you need to go Shadow achie area at location 31, 27.5
Start achievement by clicking the stone.

Rest achies you just need to enter to start them.
Locations:
Frost: 62, 21
Fire: 33, 23.5

As near as I can tell you don't actually need to speak with Archmage Xylem. Just go to 56.0,12.0 in Azshara, click on a crystal, then enter the created portal. However as of this post the portal seems to be bugged, because I was unable to enter them once they were created... so I flew to all the spots. By flying to all the events you don't need to worry about clicking the crystals at the initial point as they are simply there for a transporation mechanic.

Glutton for Icy Punishment : is located @ 62.1, 21.3 - Pick up the frost orbs, stay off the ice runes, and avoid the frost breath/spray/sprinker thingies (yes it's highly technical term...)

Glutton for Fiery Punishment : is located @ 32.9, 23.4 - Follow Darwin as he dances from circle to circle avoiding the fire runes.

Glutton for Shadowy Punishment : is located @ 31.2, 26.6 - Click the large shadow crystal, it will spawn mobs from the shadow gates, the mobs will make a straight line to you, drag them accross the shadow runes.

What i did on my hunter (85) is i would start it then when they started getting to be too much or too close i'd Feign Death. Then once they were all reset and i felt ready i'd pop back up then run around making them run into the ruins tell FD came off cooldown. Then just repeat that a few times and the achievement is yours.

Also as a side note using Deterrence does not work.

Maybe kinda lame, but as a paladin this one is very easy.

Touch to begin, and stand next to the pilar and wait for 20-25 of em to get to you. When you think there are enough spawned, you bubble and walk around a bit.. You'll get the achievement in 10sec ^^

Mount up immediately after starting the event. With your back to the portal look to the right until you spot a ledge. Fly up to it. Kill any Weeping Souls that get to the base of the ledge (they can climb up to you). If you wait a few minutes enough other Weeping Souls will trap themselves to get you the achievement, you can help them along by running left and right on the ledge to get them to aim more precisely :-)

I just helped a freind get this what we did was he got on his flying mount and stayed in the air and they would attack me i would run them over the runes and he got credit for it.

To access the Trials as a non-flying Alliance character:

You can easily get to the Arcane Pinnacle which is the location for the portal to each Trial. At 52.75, 18.0 there is a path which leads down to the water. Follow the path, swim aross to the island, and at 55.37, 15.03 you will find the first of the transporters (it's in the water just below a ledge on which an NPC paths around). You must use this transporter as you cannot reach the ledge. To be clear these transporters do not port you, they jump you onwards to the next ledge; you need only stand on them to activate them. They appear as small glowing circles on the ground.

As soon as you use the first transporter and land on the first ledge Ice Bolts start being flung down at you. Keep moving. The transporters will jump you around and up the side of the Pinnacle until you find yourself at the top. Archmage Xylem is there with 4 apprentices. The goblin apprentice is also a vendor but does not offer repair services. The top also houses the portal with 3 coloured crystals beside it (red, blue, purple). You click a crystal to activate one of the trials and then click the portal to be sent to that trial. Once you have completed a trial, or wish to leave it, you click the portal at the trial and will be returned to the Pinnacle.

Unfortunately there is no set of transporters or portals to take you back down the Pinnacle, nor is there a clear jump to the water down below. You will just have to drop down to the ledges.

Tried doing this today as a 85 warrior, didnt get hit once but dodged/missed a few attacks and didnt get achievement.

I used the advice of standing next to a portal and gathering up 20 of the mobs. It worked perfectly. Thanks for the great advice and putting an end to my frustration. I used my mount to ran away from the mobs and they indeed get trapped in multiple numbers. It will only take a few minutes to finish this achievement.

It took me a few times to get this achievement.

Use a LAND mount right after clicking the large crystal. You don't have much time, you need to click on your mount right after you click on the crystal or you will be stuck running around and will probably not get far on the achievement.

On the land mount, run around kiting the shadows. and try to make the shadows walk through the purple designs on the ground. These purple designs are the runes that you have been reading about.
I don't know when the event ends, after 20 or a few more shadows.

You can do this in two different attempts. You need to get 20 in a row, but they can be done in two different clicks of the large crystal.

Just wanted to clarify this achieve. It is another example of the incredibly impercise tooltips that are throughout the game.

"Not take damage" is not correct. It goes through both BoP and Divine Shield. It also resets even if you dodge or parry the attack, or iof the spirits miss. So in fact, you don't have to "take damage for it to reset. Basically melee attempt by the mobs resets the achieve.

I put the achievement on tracking, and was watching the number go up to 20 while I was doing it. The achievement is A LOT better to do mounted, I've found. But I only had to do it once, after I figured out what I was doing. I just mounted up, ran around the runes on the ground to trap the monsters and was able to get the achievement after 1 game. This will work for other classes, especially with melee classes. As a Paladin I watched the shadow from the orb and lined myself up with the gate it entered that had a rune between us. Usually the Soul gets trapped, if for some reason this didn't work or it missed on a occasion AND I couldn't get the soul trapped in time, I would just use Divine Storm and kill the soul. Zero Damage, doesn't reset the timer. Easy.

For those that dont know where to go for this achievment - In azshara, there is a little round island to the north. Fly there and then there is 3 crystals and a portal. You can get to all 3 zones this way and get your achievs!

Remember, if any miss a trap and get too close, you can just kill it and still carry on the achievment! :D

A flying mount will make this very easy. Flying up will make you leave combat, so just stand behind the runes and if the ghosts come too close, just fly up and they will go back to their portals at once :D

edit: When you land again, new ghosts will continue spawning, ofcourse :)
