This is a long quest line starting with https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=5251. You have to kill the Archivist in Strat Scarlet, the return and kill the last boss from Scarlet Side and loot his head. Once you turn that head in you have to kill the baron on Strat Undead side and loot his head and turn it in.

Overall a good staff if you are aiming for an intellect build.

First, you need to have the archivist done before you can loot the head. That's all I'll say on the topic, other than the graphic is real disappointing. Got it a couple days ago and it looks like an apple on a stick. Well worth it though.

Easy kill of Baron last night.

Tactics was to all stand under Baron so that adds would all gather at the same spot. Nothing more to it. Just blast and keep add's under control and you will have and easy fight.

Doin Baron with a group of 5men is fun guys, so if u want this staff, just go get urself a group of 5 good players and u'll get Baron down. It's excellent when u realize that a 5men group will do this instance sometimes easier then 10men raid, it depends with whom u play of c. I got him down with druid, holy pala, rogue and tank, I am mage and I am satisfied owner of Argent Crusader ;)

Why are people still posting that they did Stratholme 5-man? This instance has been nerfed at least three times, and is now so easy, it can be done with 3 good players. It did actually used to be hard many months ago (as in February), but it was never impossible to do 5-man.

Quite a lot has changed in the nerfs to this instance:

* Fewer gargoyle patrols
* MUCH longer respawn times on everying
* Ziggurats no longer respawn (used to have to get a rogue and druid to stealth through all the respawns and re-clear them)
* No more rat/maggot traps on the UD side
* Baroness doesn't mind control as often, and the length is much shorter (used to be 2 minutes or until they died)
* Baroness disappears when someone is mind controlled (you used to have to deal with her AND one of your friends)
* The mind controlled player now goes to full health when she releases them

What I used to do was keep the mind controlled person polymorphed while we worked on the Baroness. Of course, sometimes we would get unlucky, and she would MC the healer, or me (no polymorph), but most of the time we were able to kill Baroness on the first try with 5 people. Yes, it was much harder before, but it was never impossible.

Got this sweet staff last night. Our group consisted of me being the priest, a druid, warlock, mage, and a 59 warrior. was fairly easy. Also got the shadowy laced hand wraps, and the ring of martyr all in the same run. Just grab yourself a good warrior and healer, some aoe, and you're good to go.

keep this in my bag as a spare, as it does come in handy for the long boss fights eg bosses in zg and mc, when the fights can last for longer than 5 mins solid. my mana runs out like crazy and its always good to have a monster in the bag to change into.
however, for normal instances like strat, scolo, dm, lbrs etc, i prefer my rod of ogre magi... added crit and spell damage, but i do appreciate it is hard to get, having done 15 tributes to get mine
this is an awesome staff that isnt too hard to get, considering there arent that many decent staffs for us mages

I've done 5-man a few times without Holy Water, and it was not terribly hard with a good group, especially a good mage.

But a few days ago, I did it in a PUG... well, almost did it. We used Holy Water, and got the Baron down to 5%. And we had no mage, and the warlock forgot Curse of Doom, and we messed up the Holy Water. We didn't know about its 2-min cooldown, so the tank looted it all and we only got to use 1 Holy Water in the fight.

If a sloppy PUG with no mage and no plan can get the Baron to 5% by using 1 Holy Water, it will be an easy joke if you do it right. Just have 1 Holy Water on every party member and set up a rotation for using it. Let all the skels get aggroed to the healer, and then Holy Water them.

With this staff in the game as a damn quest item.. how the hell do people still get away with selling GBS for 1k gold in the AH? Sure you can use it at 49.. but damn.. give ME 1k gold and I'll powerlevel your char to 60 and get it this staff.

Oh.. just did baron with Warrior, Hunter, Shaman, Priest, Warlock (me)

All in MC/BWL gear though :P But yeah.. we did it the way the above guy said.. skels die in about 2 or 3 pulses of hellfire.. very soft.

Like an above poster said, 5man strat, either side, is easy. I have even done it without a warrior, had two pallies instead. Priest, rogue, mage, 2 pallies, and we owned. Another time is was a druid tanking with two pallies, mage and priest.

If you are a mage or lock looking for a good int+ staff (like me), it seems like this staff will just have to do after you have tried forever to get Trindlehaven, and dont want to spend the major cash to get Greater Brightwood Staff. Its not as good as those two, but will have to do. After all, atleast you are guaranteed to get this staff as long as you just do the quest. Overall, a more than adaquate +int staff until you get something better. :) I would recomend this!

Just did The Achivist today in 5 men party (as it's done nowadays), burn the library down and killed Balnazzar, but there was no head to loot!

Did they change anything? Do I have to do another run to be able to loot it, or am I missing something here?

Even though this staff looks like a gumball on a toothpick, the +30 int on it is just plain sexy.

For those of us who are preparing for raiding or trying to get a good start on some pvp grinding, this staff delivers.

Just put +22 int on mine the other day and I can already notice a significant difference. I understand that there are far better staves to obtain, especially for the +22 enchant, but I'm not in a raid guild and certainly will not be seeing anything better for quite some time.

It doesn't drop anywhere. After completing the Archivist quest in Scarlet Strath, you turn in the quest at Light's Hope Chapel in EPL. Then, do Scarlet Strath again and the end boss' head becomes lootable. Turn it in at LHP in EPL and you receive the quest to kill Baron. Kill Baron, come back to LHP in EPL and you receive this item.

First you do the archvisit which one of the guys at the chapel gives... Then you kill balnazzar, hand it back to the guy, then you 5-man baron, and then you get this staff or a nice sword or shield, a lot of gold, and a lot of rep

you'll find it in the eastern plaguelands. Make sure you ask around for it, this staff is one of the best kept secret in the game since nobody really knows how to get this staff.

If you're on mannanoth, look me up and I'll tell you how.

btw, the staff do look a bit ugly, not what you expect from an uber staff.

Kind of outlined in some posts below, but here are the quest steps.

1) Get the quest to kill the Archivist on the Scarlet Side of Stratholme from LHC. Needs to be 5-manned.

2) When you turn in the Archivist quest you will then be able to loot the head of Balnazaar (the end boss on the Scarlet side of Strath). If you have a warlock for summoning or a party willing to wade through the respawns, this could be done on the same run as #1, but most people probably kill Balnazaar in a separate raid.

3) The turn in of Bal's head leads to the quest to kill the Baron on the undead side (the quest Above and Beyond). You will need to be able to 5-man him for quest credit.

4) The turn in at LHC will open up the Argent Hold (a treasure chest) where you get the choice of the Argent Crusader (staff) , Argent Defender (shield), or Argent Avenger (1-h sword).

As with most quest rewards, these are bind on pickup and are, thus, only owned by those that have completed the quest series.

To start the quest, you should kill Balnazaar (boss in scarlet bastion, Stratholme) in non-raid group to get his head which starts a quest to kill Baron (end boss of Stratholme) again non-raid.
I'm not sure if you should finish Archivist and other quests first or not since I finished those quests before starting this.

Other reward is: Argent Avenger (A light saber looking sword with attack power proc against undead)

Did quest with 60 priest (myself) 60 druid, 60 rogue, 60 warrior and 60 mage---my suggestion would be to just priest buff shadow protection and then pop either a regular or greater shadow protection potion. In my opinion getting to the baron is harder than actually doing him, he's not tough if you AOE the spawning skellies before he can cast death pact and heal himself. If you don't have a mage, or if the AOE'er is down, use the holy water you find around Strat. I am enjoying my Argent Crusader, it'll do in a pinch until I get the priest epic staff.
