In the new PTR 4.0.3a you can exchange this item for mark of the conqueror for the corresponding slots. As blackriver said they are like sanctified marks but better since they are not class limited and slot limited instead you go to Jamus'Vaz the valorous Quatermaster and he trades it for the corresponding token like Crown of the Forlorn Conqueror and trade in your or piece of armor for the heroic version.

Something curious the same vendor has the normal tier headpiece and shoulders for sale from tokens and everything else for points.

I dont understand the point of this. As things are at the moment, you trade this in for a slot token, which you then use to upgrade a piece of armor from normal -> heroic. So why not just have it so that you use this directly to upgrade the armor piece? Its a totally unnecessary step.

I suspect this is the item that Lady Sinestra & Heroic Al'akir drop when you defeat her, as it was mentioned she would drop a token used to redeem for any Tier item piece. If you notice, the Tier tokens purchasable with this item are the "Heroic" versions of the token (for the iLevel 372 pieces), not the normal mode tokens the vendor accepts for the two iLevel 359 pieces.

Currently on live (4.0.3a) you need the the Essence to purchase the helm or shoulder token to allow you buy iLvl 359 T11 Helm and Shoulders, meaning that to obtain your head and shoulder pieces you need an Essence to drop from something. Gloves, Chest and Legs (ilvl 359) can all be purchased using Valor Points earned from raiding and doing the daily heroic cataclysm dungeon. After getting your T11 you can then trade in an Essence of the Forlorn to obtain another token and get the heroic version of whichever T11 item you currently own. So my answer leads to a question, if you can only obtain an Essence of the Forlorn from a heroic version of a boss does this mean you cannot get your helm and shoulders until you down a heroic version?

alot of people seem to be slightly confused with this item.

you buy the chest gloves and legs with points, you get the normal helm and shoulders with a token,
thats for normal mode loot.

now to upgrade them to heroic mode you need a SPECIFIC token to upgrade for each slot.
these tokens im assuming will drop off various bosses, all on hardmode, blah blah blah/

this is where the essence comes in, the essence from what ive seen most likely will be dropped off the end bosses on heroic, so al'akir, sinestra, and chogalgalon the observer.

the essence is a "wild card" type token that you can use to upgrade ANY slot to a heroic.

its a much better system than we had in icc where people would just ninja the same token 5 times to upgrade their gear, now you have 5 different tokens and 1 wildcard.

ok so this is how it works:

I get my helmet item from Nefarian, so i get my 359 helmet. a few weeks go by, and i get the Essence of the Forlorn from some HEROIC MODE endboss. So i go buy the crown piece, and turn that in WITH my 359 helm for the HEROIC mode of the helmet....

Basically, this item is the HEROIC token with ALL classes on it, rather than just getting 1 per week with 3 different options, you get 1 per week that ANYONE can use. This means that youll have more of a chance to upgrade your gear to its heroic version, rather than having to slit ur wrists if your class token doesnt drop.

Most likely to address RNG imbalance issue, like those seen in Wrath. My guild, for example, saw about 12% of our heroic T10 tokens fall as Conqueror. With the wild card system, a well-run guild will loot it where it's needed most, usually the token classes getting screwed by RNG.

Who am I kidding? Most guilds will give it to the guy that hoarded all his DKP through regular content, not taking any drops until Heroic so he has a massive stockpile.

I really appreciate this new system. No longer will we have to worry about, say, the holy pally with full heroic tier, being passed a token for their off set because there is no priest or warlock in the raid. Instead, one of these drops, EVERYONE gets to roll on it! =) Great idea Blizzard!

As far as which boss(es) this drops from, assume it will be the same bosses that drop the normal tier armor tokens for the head and shoulders. Just an assumption

While at the time of this post, we don't know where Essence of the Forlorn drops, I'm going to assume Sinestra, the heroic only boss in BoT drops it. By having her drop this item, it gives raids more flexibility in who they upgrade and what they upgrade, as opposed to her dropping only shoulders and randomly choosing between Vanq/Prot/Conq marks.This would make her a more appealing boss to down.

As for why we have to go through the hassle of exchanging the Essence for the mark you want to use to upgrade your armor piece with, it's simple. Blizzard could either have the Essence be exchanged the way it is now, they could double the amount of items you buy from the vendor (example: having one set of leggings bought with legs+leg mark, and another for legs+essence), or finally, Blizzard could implement the tech to allow items be bought with either or requirements.

The current implementation takes the least work from Blizzard and is the least confusing in the long run.

So what if it's a wildcard? Put every piece of gear on the vendor and make them all cost 1 essence. It'd still work as a wildcard and be a hell of a lot less confusing.

It's as if mobs dropped vouchers, that you took to NPCs to exchange for gold, so you could use the gold as a "wildcard" to buy anything on the AH. There is no reason the middle step should be there.

I really don't know what all the confusion is all about. It is very simple.

You buy your ilevel 359 tier gear with valor points. Then you run heroic mode raids. The bosses drop tokens (head, shoulders, chest, hands, legs). You can take this token along with the corresponding piece of gear that you already have and trade them both in for the heroic version for that slot.

Now for the essence. The end bosses will drop the essence. This can be used to purchase ANY of the tokens that you need. Say you lose the roll for the chest token that dropped this week and that is the only piece that you have left to upgrade. You still have the chance to roll on the essence that drops. You can then turn it into the piece that you need.

This is why there are tokens in the valor vendor purchasable for the essences. The bosses drop the tokens, but you can still buy the tokens with essence. I hope that this clears things up a little. It is actually pretty self explianitory when you look in the valor vendor. I do agree with the above poster. Anyone that is in a position to get one of these essences, is not gonna have to ask how to use it.

This is pretty much the "gimmie" token among all of the heroic ones due to the fact that everyone can use them. Drops for each token are as follows:

Halfus Wyrmbreaker: Chest
Maloriak: Legs
Magmaw: Gloves
Nefarian: Head
Cho'gall: Shoulders
Al'Akir: Essence of the Forlorn

agree why can't we get a raid finder that is similar to a dungeon finder to get this done?

Yeah... good luck killing heroic mode Al'akir in a PuG. If you don't raid, then you don't *need* full tier set. 'Nuff said.

I am sorry, but if you do not raid then you do not need the level of gear that these tokens buy. It's that simple. Dungeons will continue to scale and give better gear, but you are going to have to get used to the fact that what is avaliable to you will always be a full tier and a half lower then what you can get in heroic raids.

Gear it a means to an end, in that you aquire more powerful gear to be able to beat more powerful bosses. It's why raids always progress in difficulty from one tier to the next. It's not for standing around and idling in stormwind.

as of current live patch 4.1.x
heroic helm and heroic shoulders aren't showing up as requiring the normal versions along with the token, but the heroic token only, so this essence of the forlorn is a direct shortcut to heroic shoulders or heroic helms

this is like the marks dropped from saurfang, putricide, sindragosa and the lich king. In this case the token works for all classes instead of one.

This is the same old problem that makes me think that a person with a baseball bat might be able to go into blizzard headquarters and knock some sence into them.

Kindergartens do not require HS diplomas for new students for a good reason.

I have my full vicious Gladiator gear and I have 3,900 justice points (converted Honor to Justice). It is time to start getting my PVE gear. There does not seem to be any good PVE gear available. My vicious galdiator is far better than the level 346 or the 359 gear that it will let me purchase.

I can purchase the downgrade gear (some pieces) and use them or bank them until I get upgrade tokens (Essence of the Forlorn required) which require doing heroics dungeons. I cannot get into the dungeons that give the "Essence of the Forlorn" because groups do not want work with under equipped players, and I cannot go in myself.

So I cannot begin to get even the first piece of gear that will allow me to do the heroic dungeons until long after I have been doing lots of heroic dungeons.

I will continue to convert my honor to justice and purchase and bank the 359 gear in the hope that blizard makes a change which will allow players of my type to get more involved in the game.

After you buy from npc one of the armors needed to turn in for other armors can you wear the first armor you buy with points before you trade it in? Or does that void it and you have to get another one not worn/equipped?
