What your looking for is a blood elf on a horse. Once you find him, inch up to him slowly then use the flare gun. A hunter will appear, let him get aggro then help him fight.

This quest is soooo bugged. I was waiting for him at a clear area and a level 24 gnome warlock got ahead of me and killed him right before my eyes and I also got the quest completed so you just have to watch him die.

he is riding a felsteed on the road to vector coil. oh and dont kill him for quest you have to use flare gun on him then a guy comes and capures him. go back to blood watch and his trail awaits. its pretty funny he laughs and calls names to the profit then a dranei comes up and kills him in one hit

Matis the Cruel walks up and down the path from the Vector Coil.
He is easily soloed, once you find him just use the flare gun and an npc will appear and pretty much kill him for you.

Sometimes this quest can bug and the summoned NPC will ignore Matis while he beats the daylight out of you. My pet and I got creamed by Matis while the Tracker just walked around in circles. I think this happens if you are too far away when you shoot the flare. I had to drop the quest and pick it up again because the flare only has one charged and is consumed completely once it is used (the item disappears).

Make sure you're close to Matis. Try to catch him further down the road away from the blood elf camps and it should go fine.

I was sitting next to the road when someone ran up and attacked matis, and captured him using his flare gun/hunter, but I still got credit for the quest.

u dont need to kill "matis the cruel" just shot to him and run away :) done it with lvl 16 shaman :)

i killed him 3 times with 18 frost mage, i always forgot to use flaregun:P so very easy mob ;) however you must summon the guard, not to kill him alone :)

Matis himself is fearable, but if you fear him at a bad time just as he falls unconcious he bugs out and you don't get credit.

Also of note, the tracker that assists you can die, so be wary of that.

I submitted a screenshot of this a while back; but there are several people in LightHeaded who cannot see screenshots and may be curious. Upon completing this quest you will see a 'cut scene'; which is one of the few in the game. Here is the dialogue typed out:

Image of Velen says: Bring forth the blood elf.
Image of Velen says: Matis, blood elf lieutenant of the Sunhawks, you have been found guilty of genocide against the draenei people.
Image of Velen says: You are to be executed at light's dawning. Have you anything to say for yourself?
Matis spits at the image of Velen.
Image of Velen says: May the Light have mercy on your soul. Take him back to his cell.
Matis glares at Velen.
Matis says: The Light?
Matis laughs.
Matis says: I am a Blood Knight, mongrel. I do not serve the Light, the Light serves me. If mercy is to be granted, it will be by me.
Matis says: You seek to martyr me before my order - so be it. Strike me down, another will rise in my place and the suffering of the Light - of the conquered - will continue uninterrupted.
Vindicator Kuros says: You blaspheme! The Light would never allow such an aberration!
Matis says: The Light has no choice. It does as it is commanded. Just as the naaru you hold at the core of your vessel will do when we capture and enslave it... Do my words surprise you, blue blood? Yes, we know... We know everything.

Blade of Argus says: Move!
Matis says: Draenei dog! Did you know that one you call Saruan wept like a babe as I beat him? A feeling of euphoria coursed through me, knowing that I had a member of a high rank in my grasp. Were it not for Sironas' plans for him, I would have tortured him to death... As I do to all draenei that I capture. Alas, I am certain that you will see him again soon...
Matis grins wickedly..
Vindicator Kuros says: Breathe your last breath, heathen.

Honestly I think it is harsh for a reaction of the draenei to be that way. I always thought they were a forgiving people and a peaceful people until I saw this. I cannot quite place my finger on it but it kind of shakes me up. Also; this indicates that Kael'Thalas knows the draenei came to Azeroth. The blood elves on Azuremyst and Bloodmyst Isles are loyal to Kael.

You can do this quest easily at almost any level, as long as you can obtain the quest. Just get somewhat close to him, use the gun, start doing some damage, and bam, you'll be done quicker than you can say his name.

Personally, it took me maybe 5 seconds to do it as a 17 hunter. I'm confident I could have done it at a much earlier level, though.

Lol! I didn't read the quests rules close enough when I did this, so I ended up killing him instead. Make sure you use your flare gun, do not kill him. haha. Otherwise its a simple quest. Easy XP.

this was easy as hell it took me 5 secs he is on the road inbetween the 2 blood elf camps the one with like 13 and 14s and then the one where the journal quest comes from i was a 16 paladin when i did this quest super easy try it out.

If you are a very high character, do not hit him at all. You will one-shot him. He is not to be killed, only captured. Just stand there and watch. Maybe heal NPC if needed.

If you accidentally kill Matis just abandon the quest and try again. I used the flare and the Tracker spawned and aggro'ed Matis, but I accidentally killed him. The Tracker was still there though, so I decided to wait for Matis to spawn and see if the Tracker would still capture him. After Matis spawned, I trained him to the Tracker, who aggro'ed and attacked Matis until he died.

It is not longer necessary to fight him. When you find him, just fire off the flare, an npc shows up and fights him. 7/14/2012

In fact, this is a soloable quest. When you found him, just use the flare gun, and the tracker will come immediately. It took just 5-8 secs to capture him, you don't need to fight long. It's piece of cake. ;)

Level 20, solo'ed him easy without the flare gun (forgot about it, heh). Used a couple cooldowns but nothing hard. Wanders the path over by Vindicator's Rest or whatever it's called.

It says Horde on the quest description, but it's obviously Alliance only.

Anyway, solo'd that sucker, before I had the quest, with Lv 17 Shaman, no pots. Gift of the Naaru ftw.

when you see him signal the guy then help kill him and then at like 50% heath it just says quest complete

Solo'ed this as my lvl 21 paladin. Real easy. Just waited for him to come up the road and once he was pretty close, I fired the flair. One of the draenei came to help me out. Start helping in attacking him until it says:
1. Captured Mathis Complete 1/1
2. The Draenei who came to your aid tells you that he has Mathis and for you to return to bloodwatch.

I killed him twice before I had the quest, so I knew it wouldn't be all that hard. weird thing is, I used the flare and absolutely nothing happened. I walked behind him forever and eventually I guess I got too close and he attacked me. once he got down on health, I was told I'd done the quest and he vanished. rather odd, but I completed the quest anyway.

He travels the road heading north out of Blood Watch and west to Vindicator's Rest. Do not aggro him just use the flare and let the NPC capture him. if you aggro and kill him you will not complete the quest

I just wanna add a comment: When I sent up the flare, the NPC just stood there, and didn't attack Matis. But, it's not a problem to take him down, I had a lvl 18 hunter, and you only need to take half his life (actually, I had killed him once before not aware I had to send up the flare first, so it shows it's fully solo-able). Like the others say, he trots on the road going north from Blood Watch.

For all those that want a brief but accurate method of this q here it is.Just go north alond road from Blood Watch. At fork take eastern road. I met him at 36,47. Keep out of range & when he gets close enough click on your flare. The npc does most of the work so feel free to jump in when you like lol. As soon as enemy health is down the Q is complete.....Easy as pie

Easy quest, ignore the group requirement. Send up the flare when you are near him, avoid pulling aggro. An NPC appears and starts beating on Matis, just sit back and watch. The NPC will easily subdue him, and quest complete.

Why does this say horde? Its an alliance quest... as is the prereq.
I doubt its both, since the start NPC is Draenei in Blood Watch :-P

kek... soloed as a lvl 15 shaman... totems down, set off flare and then just keep yourself alive... easy as nothing :)

Level 17 Draenei Paladin - I found him near Vindicator's Rest, I shot at him from far away and an elite npc zoomed in and started fighting him (+ 4 other blood elves..) I stood there watching him and about 30 seconds later they stopped fighting and it told me the quest was complete! I walked away! Easy!

Abandoned quest but stupidly put flare gun in bank which is where remained
when I tried to pick up the quest again and so had to go all the way back to the bank to get it. Took me a while to work out why I wasn't getting it.
