As it says, this drops off of any of the tar elementals just south of the flight point in ungoro. I've actually had better luck getting it off of the lower leveled of the mobs, so grind em up for fast quest completion.

The mobs holding these are also home to some of the most irritating abilities a melee class can face. Thier cast 'Black Sludge' will slow attack speed by 54%, and move speed by 30%. And thier 'Sticky Tar' armor will randomly disarm you.

If you dual wield you'll see the second effect a lot without some protection to it.

fight em close to fungal rocks theyr round lvl 50 to 52 there thts where i got all of my tar :)

found the highest drop rate from the lvl 50-52's at the southwestern most pools.

I killed 15 of the lords, etc before I moved over to the lower level ones (50-52).

Then the tar just started pouring out of them. Literally got all 12 in maybe 20-25 kills.

Go for the lower level ones.

(The lords are a pain, they'll curse you (-35% attack speed & -70% movement), root you, and then disarm you with their tar) Too much trouble!

According to the drop rates mentioned here, and according to the fact that people killing the Tars don't necessarily have the quest, I have thought that the drop rate for those cannot be that bad ...

Though, I have been killing Tar Beasts, Creepers and Lord south of Marshal Refuge (in the dark Tar Pits you can see on the global map) for like 1 hour now, been killing dozens, and I have got like 5 of those items total.

Is the drop rate just bad ? Is there a better place to get them, or have I just some bad luck ?

It seems to me that the drop rate goes up as their levels do. The level 53-54s seem to drop them very often, while the 50-51s seem to drop much less.

I couldn't help cheating on this one and bringing someone along to help ... damn it was insanely boring with a drop rate lower than my drained mana

Drop rate wasn't awful here.. solo'ed it and got all twelf in 20 minutes.. with a lvl 49 hunter

my 51 shadow priest got them together in 30 mins

and i was killing them faster than that 60 hunter roaming there :)

Tried the other tar pits, got nothing, went to the northern/eastern two tar pits and got about an 80% drop of stickies from 51 and 52 elimentals. Quick and simple

It could have been coincidence. I was killing the wandering ones and obtained about 2 drops in 1 hour. Then I noticed the ones actually walking in the tar pit seemed to have a higher drop rate. I started killing the ones who had walked in tar pit, and dragging others into the tar pits and I got the remaining 10 drops in 15 minutes..

As a hunter, just to be sure, I'd kill them in melee, with the mob, my pet and I fully swimming in the tar.

I killed more than 100 of these to get the 12 drops. The droprate is around 10%

2024 here. The drop rate is now 100%. BUT, you cannot rightclick the dead enemy. I had to select the corpse and then click that scraper. This got me 100% drop rate.
