When the night elves first joined the Alliance, it was after many centuries of seclusion. In Season of Discovery, it's revealed that not all night elves accepted the decision to ally with other races. A rebellion led by Illari Duskfeather tried to keep Kalimdor for the kaldorei.
Night Elf Rebellion
The questline begins with the discovery of a pillaged campsite in Desolace, where you find the grisly remains of two humans and a dwarf. Based on the markings on the bones, the attack was a savage one - but not done by animals or centaurs. We learn that these attacks have become quite common lately - since the victims are always humans and dwarves, it's assumed that a group of Horde marauders are behind them.
To our surprise, we learn that the group behind the attacks is led by a night elf named Illari Duskfeather. While she attacks Horde on sight, Alliance players can question Illari further about her reasons behind the attacks.
As it turns out, this night elf hasn't accepted her people's place in the Alliance. As far as she's concerned, humans and dwarves are just as destructive as any Horde race, and Kalimdor should belong to the kaldorei.
Chillingly, Illari even subtly predicts that an alliance with the other races will eventually lead to the burning of Teldrassil - she speaks of humans at the foot of Teldrassil, torches in hands.
You're the one who attacked those Alliance camps in Desolace, aren't you?
Yes, and I'd do it again if those damned Marshals weren't so persistent.
But you're a night elf. Why would you do such a thing?
Kalimdor belongs to the kaldorei. I refuse to see it defiled by the lesser races.
Our leaders act as if the Alliance and the Horde are so different, but they debase our lands all the same. Do you not see how the dwarves plunder the earth for all that they can? Do you think the human appetite for expansion will not bring them to the foot of Teldrassil some day; blades and torches in hand?
To think my people bowed to those vermin over a few orcish lumber camps. Pathetic.
If our leaders cannot protect us, then I will do what must be done.
Most players, whether Alliance or Horde, have to fight Illari to progress the quest. Note: While we previously stated players have to kill Illari, it actually seems like she manages to escape, as she vanishes after exclaiming, "No! It cannot end here!" - leaving a bag with the key behind. This could mean Illari is still alive somewhere! Either way, night elf players have a special dialogue option with Illari, allowing them to sympathize with her cause.
I sympathize with your plight, Illari. Kalimdor is ours, and ours alone.
<Illari's expression softens, if only slightly.>
It is good to see my kaldorei brethren still have some fight within them.
I'd like you to have something.
<Illari hands you a key.>
This will unlock the cache in the nearby shed. I've found some powerful items in my travels, and I'd like to share with a fellow believer in my cause.
Be strong, <name>, and may Elune watch over you.
