A Fond Farewell
I wanted to take a moment to inform you that as of today, I am resigning as Wowhead's Head of Content and Community.
I have been offered another position working in the Community department at
Zynga
(yes,
that
Zynga), and I will be starting there on Monday.
I am leaving on 100% good terms with everyone here on the team, and I fully intend to stay in touch. Fortunately, because I am NOT going to work for Blizzard, I'm not required to keep my mouth shut about WoW-related things, so you'll still see me hanging around the forums here—I just won't have blue text any more. :)
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for making my time here so enjoyable and productive. I was here for the birth of these forums and this blog, and you guys are the reason I'm here. I know we've had our moments, and I know there are times when it seems like the forums are full of trolls—but Wowhead's community will always be my home, and there's no other online community that's more helpful, friendly, and respectful.

Love is in the Air Guide! (Feb 6 - 20)
Ah, love is in the air - along with horrible chemicals and poisons as well! What the heck! Love is in the Air starts on Sunday, and (as usual) we've got an updated
guide
for you guys!
This year, the
Love is in the Air
event runs from
February 6th
through
February 20th
. So far, the event looks to be the same as last year's updated event, which features a special seasonal boss -
Speziale Hummel
! You can queue up for this encounter by speaking to Steamwheedle Shyster, located in
Roccavento
(by the Trade District Auction House) or in
Orgrimmar
(near the path to Grommash Hold). Each day you'll have a chance to receive special, fun items from the
Scatola a Forma di Cuore
- maybe even a
Spezzacuori X-45
! In addition, the necklaces dropped by Hummel have been updated to level 85 and are now item level 346 and rare quality!

Imageshack Links Installing Malware, Blocked on Wowhead
We've gotten a number of reports in the last week or so indicating that
Imageshack
is inadvertently installing malware on user's computers!
While we recognize that this MAY be a false positive, we don't like to take risks with our users' info, so
we are blocking imageshack links on the site.
Future imageshack links will be scrambled, and links will not go through!
For those of you who are hosting your images with imageshack, we apologize for the inconvenience. In the meantime, we encourage you to use an alternative image-hosting solution, like
imgur
,
Min.us
, or
CloudApp
.

Lunar Festival Guide! (Jan 23 - Feb 13)
It's that time of year again! The Lunar Festival has come - and we have a

for that!
This year, the Lunar Festival runs from
January 23rd
through
February 13th
. So far, the event looks to be mostly the same - no new Dungeon Finder boss or anything of that nature.

It's worth mentioning that due to the Cataclysm, some Elder locations have been changed! Most Elders locations have changed only slightly, as they remain in the same general area - it's just that the general area itself may have moved!

New Feature: Database Tags in Forum Posts/Comments
Posters and guide writers, rejoice!
We've implemented a system where you can easily embed links to Wowhead pages into your comments and forum posts. All you have to do is click the "Link" button shown at right, choose a category, and enter the ID—the system will automatically create a link with the appropriate title, color, and icon!

It's been a while since our last big

New Feature: Currency Pages!
We've added a new feature to the database:
Currency Pages

You can now view a complete list of all the different currencies that are available in the game. Each currency has a short article explaining what the currency is and how to get it, and tabbed lists of everything you can buy with that currency, and any quests that reward the currency.

New Battle.net Website—Featuring Wowhead Links
Blizzard has officially launched the new Battle.net website, with a special bonus feature that we haven't been able to talk about until now:
Wowhead links!
You can now find links to Wowhead all over the Armory database! Item pages, character pages, search listings, even the talent calculator—all have convenient links to your favorite WoW database.
We're really honored to be chosen to be part of this new Blizzard venture—and we're looking forward to continued cooperation with Blizzard in the future. :)
Of course, that's not the

awesome thing in the new

(just the most important)—there's a ton of other awesome stuff, including
raid progression and recommendations
on the Armory,

New Feature Preview: Forum Signatures
Wowhead is beta-testing a new feature:
Character-based forum signatures!
Right now,
anyone with a premium account can try them out
, and you can use them here on Wowhead or on any other forum that accepts image embeds. Here's how you get set up:
Creating a signature
Claim a character. To do this, look up your character on the
Profiler
. Hit the button, and select
Claim Character
.
Once the character is claimed, click the button and select
Signature
.
Once you're there, this will take you to the
signature page!
Here you can edit all sorts of things—what statistics your signature shows, background colors, text colors, and so forth. You can adjust the color of the background from a simple gradient to any of a number of "Wowhead backgrounds" (which we borrowed from the in-game cloak textures). You can even upload your own!
Once you have your signature finished, click
Submit
and your signature will be saved to your user page, under the
Signatures
tab. You can see

Request for Feedback: Possible New CAPTCHA System
Wowhead uses a CAPTCHA system to prevent spam comments or forum posts from bots. We switched a little while ago to a system called
reCAPTCHA
, which were excited about since it lets you help with a book digitizing project while you fill out CAPTCHAs. Unfortunately, reCAPTCHA has caused a few issues as many of you know—providing words to type that weren't legible, or which used non ASCII symbols. For example, we got this feedback less than an hour ago:

But seriously, what is that? cftvth? cfwth? cfwtb? cnvtb? Well, cf it is then.

Thottbot Merged with Wowhead Framework
We just received this announcement from ZAM and I wanted to pass it along to you guys since some of you are probably wondering about Thottbot's future.
In a review of our World of Warcraft community sites,
ZAM Network
has decided to make some changes to the
Thottbot.com
site.
While
Wowhead will remain unaffected
, Thottbot will be sharing some of the Wowhead technology platform. A key goal was to improve the data available to the Thottbot community while retaining the Thottbot styling, navigation and community.
The following changes will occur to
thottbot.com
:
Thottbot will load its database information from Wowhead's database.
Thottbot will load its comment, screenshot, and video information from Wowhead's database.
Thottbot's blogs and forum have been closed. We will be setting up a Thottbot-specific forum on Wowhead for discussion specific to that site.
Thottbot user accounts are being deactivated. Unfortunately most of the accounts on Thottbot had no email addresses associated with them and Wowhead's technology requires an email address to register an account.

Pre-Shattering WoW Database Active
A quick announcement for people recovering from their overdose of various culinary delights:
we took a snapshot of our database right before The Shattering and have made this snapshot available for users!
Obviously, this archive will not see any updates whatsoever, but with all the reminiscing about how things were "back in the day", we thought some of you might appreciate being able to link to evidence of just how far up that hill you had to walk in the snow.

New Utility: DB Pages Without Screenshots
Considering how much new stuff has been added in this latest patch event, we thought it might be a good time to roll out this little bonus feature!
If you look under
Tools > Utilities
, you'll find a new button labeled
missing screenshots
. This will show you all the items, spells, NPCs, and so on in our database that don't have screenshots yet, so
you
can be the first to submit one!
Now's the time—explore that brave new redesigned world, and post your findings!

Personalized Search Update: Now Works On All Completion Data
Remember when we posted yesterday to let you know about our new
Personalized Quest Searches
?
Well we've published a little tweak to update it—you can now filter
any search you have completion data for, based on whether or not you've completed it!
That means you can sort out any of the following categories based on whether or not you've completed them:
Mounts
Companions
Recipes
Quests
(of course)
Achievements
Titles
Factions
(so you can sort by which ones you have at Exalted and which ones you don't)
There's a lot of potential here, and I'm really eager to see how you guys use it. Let us know!
