You comment is somewhat misleading. This particular item drops from the Whelplings in the Badlands and Duskwallow Marsh as shown on the Dropped By Tab.

Yes, there are other types of whelpling drops. Tiny Emerald Whelpling (https://www.wowhead.com/classic/item=8498) and Tiny Crimson Whelpling (https://www.wowhead.com/classic/item=8499).

For some reason, this pet seems to usually sell for less than the Tiny Emerald Whelping. This is most likely due to the fact that there's less places to obtain the drop.

I found one of these on my rogue in badlands not too long ago, I grinded for a week at a rate of three hours a day and didnt find any till the seventh day. The drop rate seems lower than that of the crimson and emerald whelplings. If your a leatherworker you will make a lot of gold off of the skins of these guys.

My name is Crimsonius from the terenas realm, I finnally got the dark whelpling pet after 35 hours over a 4 day weekend of farming scalding whelps in the badlands. This amounts to well over 4000 whelps dead. i started this at level 41 and finnally got one right after i leveled to 45. This is from only killing dark whelps. It looks really cool and goes well with what looks like my small army! (Im a hunter.) this pet gives you instant respect from others and is indeed a great conversation starter. I highly recommend hunting for dark whelplings in the badlands if your in the low 40s because in the duskwallow marsh farming can be very frustrating, There are usless searing hatchlings that look just like the searing whelps and lots of other powerfull mobs that loooove to gang up on the unsuspecting farmer!

I got SUPER lucky with one of these little guys. First scalded whelp in the Badlands I killed dropped one. I didn't even know what it was until I checked it out. Makes the perfect pet for my gnome warlock, I say! I had no idea it was so rare though, talk about timing.

I farmed these damn things for nearly 8 lvls. I went everday to the Lethlor ravine thinking that i would get one as easily as I got my Emerald and Crimson whelps, but it took just a little while longer lol. I got my crimson after 4 hrs, my emerald after about 1 week of 2hrs+ per day, and fINALLY i got my dark whelpling yesterday after i had already been once that day, I decided to get back on and try a to kill just a few more..I killed 1, logged off for about 5 min to get dinner and then right as i relogged, one spawned and attacked me.....it was the one, i couldnt beleive it:) I had nearly given up but because whelplings give such good drops and exp i decided to go back that last time, lol. took long enough:)lol i'm a nerd.

All this obsessing over how many mobs you had to whack to find your Dark Whelpling, and nobody answers half a dozen repeated questions from others saying Does It Do Anything?

So listen up - NO, it doesn't do anything special, it's just a cosmetic pet toy like the tabby cat and horned owl and brown snake etc.

The only difference is that it's very rare and different looking and guaranteed to start conversations when you summon it.

A little while ago I've been farming for this whelpling for 2 days. So this guildie of mine was wondering what i was doing so long in the badlands. I told him that i was trying to get a whelpling and i killed over more then 2000 for it. He felt sorry for me and offered me a hand, so i agreed. He said that i could have the whelpling of course when it drops.
So we kill the last one of the south part and what you think it drops. And you never guess what, he picks it up and summons it. O.O ( grrrr ) so i kick him from our duo group and he asks why ....why? what you think yourself! and then he starts telling me he's so sorry. ( yeah whatever ) if i only would have known he would screw me over like that ...

:( since then i never found another whelpling again

I've had a dark whelpling for a while now and today(7 april 2006) I got my disgusting oozeling.

Tips if you don't wanna be bored while grinding, is to have a good guild with a funny guild chat, makes time fly away, this is what made me forget how boring it was when I was hunting for my dark whelpling :).

Another tip is to read a web comic from the beginning to the end while you'grinding. I read pvponline.com while hunting for my oozeling, but you can also check out machall, gucomics, penny-arcade and ctrl-alt-delete. This only works for meele classes like druid, shaman, hunter, warrior and rogue. Maybe warlock can do it to with a little wanding.

Podcasts is also nice :) Listening to "The Dawn and Drew show" while grinding Timbermaw rep :)

Just shift your attention to something else other than the thing you're killing and it feels that it goes much faster :).

Vote for me, cause these tips must be spread to the people :)

Took me 12 and 1/2 hrs to get one, but I finally got one. There are two valleys where these things are, one to the north and one to the south of the big open area with the dragons. The one in the north is hard to get to, so I had it to myself much of the time.

These are a 1 in 3000 drop, so be patient if you insist on getting one (much hate hate hate to those who got it first drop :P)

I now have the complete set. 4 hours on the reds, 8 and 1/2 on the greens. My recommendation if you don't care which whelpling you get, go for the red. Much more mobs, lvl 24-26, and higher drop rate (1 in 1000). The darks are too rare and there aren't enough dreaming whelps, not to mention it stinks to have to kill the adolescents when they don't drop whelplings :/

I've grinded the red (not so long), green (3+ hours), and now the black (2+ hours). Rough guesses anyway.

Not one of the whelplings yet, but I suspect that is because I have only dropped a few hundred of them. The odds are against me having one yet.

I am not saying that everyone is lying on here, but I know that a good number of them are.

Do the math on these and you'll see about a 1 in 4000 drop rate.

Yes, it is possible (even probable) that a couple of people got lucky and dropped them fairly quickly.

But as many as have posted here? Yeah right.

I keep at them because they are good experience, drop quickly, and have decent drops. The prospect of getting a whelpling is a nice bonus that keeps my interest in grinding them a bit longer (rather than questing all the time).

So those of you getting discouraged, you either have to realize that the odds are against you or suck it up and buy one from the auction house.

The thing to remember about the whelp drops, Not everyone that goes out will get it in the first 20 hours, or even the first 30, If you do keep going you will get one, But Then there are those that go in for 15 min and get two
For me on the red ones it was like that, level 24 and 25 both I got a whelp, didn't see another, started grinding on greens at level 30, Now at level 39 starting on blacks, I have never seen a green whelp drop,

Things to remember while farming them, if you are farming for a whelp...don't Farm for the whelp, _and_ the cash, and flame sac's they drop, In my case for the skins as well... So much more satisfaction that way

I tried farming the Scalding Whelps in the Badlands for about an hour and a half so far. I think I killed a good 150 of them. I wish there were clustered together better, and more of them. Kind of slow to grind. All green/grey for me now, so very little to no XP, but easy to kill.

I plan to go back and farm some more. I really want one of these rare whelpling pets. :)

I got mine after about 6 hours of grinding for the flame sacs to make the chili. Wasn't even looking for it. Good thing is I need the money to get my mount. Its so embarassing to be seen running around as a lvl 45 without a mount. Maybe I'll come back later for my own.

Ive been farming the Badlands for about a week now..each nite ill go farm leather and drops for 1-2 hours and Hope I just get lucky for the pet drop..

What do you know at 4 am I get lucky and while im farming/talking to guildies a strange Icon pops up under the loot menu, SWEET MOTHER OF THE ALMIGHTY ITS A PET!

Well maybe not in those words, but the feeling you get is overwhelming..id say about 200 kills till I got mine^^

GL to the rest of you..it is possible..shoot I had a friend get one after 3 KILLS! 3, thats right..just 3.

this thing is worth 100+g and if you get it around level 40ish, the money is more important than the pet.

if you want it when you hit level 60 and are loaded with money. then just buy it then.

Ive been farming for this thing for 2 days now, must have killed at least 500 of the Scalding Whelps in Badlands and no sign of the Dark Whelping and only 3 Green items :(:( Is it all just luck or does it depend on the level of the mob you kill?

Droprate seems to work separately for each level ( 41 - 43 in Badlands ), wich means i can kill more then 3000 of these before getting one whelpling. I'm working on getting one and i've passed the 0,07% droprate-chance on the collective.

Is it like this in instances? Feels like a friggin lottery. Better make some more coffee...

I killed nothing but Scalding Whelps for nearly six hours trying to level up my scarlet tracking hound while scale-farming and haven't gotten one of these to drop yet. Have to keep trying, I guess.

They're not being stingy with their other drops, though....got a handful of greens which are sitting on the AH, 17 scales, two steel lockboxes, and even Gloves Of Holy Might (OMGWTFBBQ). At least they're making it worth my time to keep grinding them! :)

I just got one from the Stormwind AH for 50s!
I've been grinding for about 5 lvls to get a Crimson Whelpling without luck, I guess the Gods smiled upon me today ^__^

Headed into Badlands to farm small flame sacs, no intentions on looking for this thing at all. Whelpling dropped on my second kill there. You just either get lucky or you don't.

Personaly i think vanity pets are a waste, but if somebody is gonna pay me that much gold who am i to complain? anyway i got one for these on like my 5th scalding whelp i killed so i thought it was a common drop. good thing i decided to research before selling. I had no idea it was so valuable. :-]

Well, I had been looking up ways to farm some money. I happened to find a reference to selling this item on the auction house for a bunch of gold. So, not really thinking that I would get this drop, I headed over to the area just to kill some things and get some experience. It dropped on my first kill. I was happy, especially since I'm selling it and I am putting the money I earn off of it twords my debt. (I owe a friend about....hmm...90 gold because he lent me 100 for my level 40 mount and riding skill...)

I found one when i was Level 40 grinding those Whelps in Badland to get their Worn Dragonscales, another Paladin was there too farming them for the Pet and i didnt even was there because of the Pet, man when i told him he was some what pissed xD

Took about 12 stacks of thick leather's worth of scalding whelps for this to finally drop. Totally worth the wait, now I have a cool little dragon following me around :)

If you've been farming for days and weeks and read about people getting one in 20 minutes, don't feel bad.

Think about the massive amount of "life luck quotient" they've just used up. Of course there is no such thing, but what if there is? If it's true that we're born w/ only a certain amount of luck, do you really want to burn that much of it on a cyber toy you're going to ditch in a year or less, anyway?

I mean, burn up too much luck, and you could die tomorrow from a paper cut or something.

I'd rather use my luck on winning the Lottery or dodging a major whammy ... still off I go to Wetlands for a crimson doodad....

I have vowed to get all the drogon whlplings as pets. I got my first crimson whelp around lvl 30 and about lvl 34 i started to grind the Dreaming whelps for the Emerald Whelp pet and i grinded all the way untill forty then i started questing agian. Then tonight i decided to go find the Searing whelps and after killing about ten of these buggers i got 2 dark whelplings on 1 drop. So i sold one for 35g and kept the other.

I still havent gotten my emerald whelp and i wll get one but i had to make an account to brag about the magnificent luck i had today not 1 but 2 Dark Whelplings on 1 kill.

I farm for 3 days for now, and i've had no dark whelp :-((( and in the same time, found 3 emerald whelp, so event if it's a matter of "statistics", i think the indicated rate is quite "surestimated".
Now, i go back to farm ^^

Been killing these things for about 2 days now. Primarily the ones south of the Elites in the middle. Does anyone have any better info on if they drop more to the north or south?

Ok so my friend is lvl 39 and he desparatly needs his mount money so he asks me to try and get him a dark whelpling while he tried to get an emerald and or crimson one so he can raise his mount money. I went to badlands and stated killing off the whelps there and about an hour after it i got anotrher dark whelpling this made # 3 for me lol. Within 1 week. so as of today 05/11/05 there is a Dark Whelpling in the Ah on the horde side of the Gilneas server. And about 10 min after i got that dark one he got a Crimosn whelplibg drop which will be up for auction after the dark whelpling is sold.

you can send a tell or game mail to me under the name Probation on the horde side of the Gilneas server for the Dark Whelp pet and for the Crimson Whelp pet you can send a tell to Mostastless.

EDIT: I sold that dark whelp for 65 on the Gilneas Server on the 12th

My little son plays WoW and has been wanting a whelping for months now. I promised him I'd get him one, but...

...after doing several levels in Wetlands on the reds and crimsons - no whelpling.

After spending much time in SoS on the green ones, no whelpling pet.

After much time in Badlands - no whelpling - and then tonight I just went back to Badlands for a lark. These guys were coming - a group - and a whelping started to chase them - but they were mounted - and I pulled it off them (and it was my fight - my pull).

Killed it - and to my shock - I got my boy his little dragon pet! He's asleep now. He's going to be SO HAPPY tomorrow! WOOT!

My gf decided to get a crimson one

Crimson Whelpling drops Tiny Crimson Whelp 0,05% about 30-40 killed, she got it.
Dark whelplings drop Tiny Dark Whelp 0,08% two killed, she got it. In the same half hour.

She's going for the emerald atm.

I was out in Badlands farming Mithril for my blacksmithing, and a whelp was in front of a Truesilver vein. I killed him, and got one of these. One of my guild mates had just bought one a few minutes before, so he was kind of annoyed. I plan on trying to sell it on the AH.

I am not what you would call the lucky farmer, but to my surprise me and my buddy were gonna kill the lvl 50 elite dragons for broken alliances quest, and a whelp was in our way so we decided to kill it and he dropped the dark whelpling. Sold it the next day for 150g withing 5 minutes. We split it 50/50 and damn was I happy.

Just got one. I wasn't even trying for it, just collecting Mithril in that area (the Badlands spawn). Cliche ending = I was just about to hearth out of there when it dropped :p

FYI, the spawn north of the area with the elite drakes is quick enough for two, maybe three people to farm constantly.

After slaughtering whelps nearly every waking hour for three days, somebody new moved in on what I was starting to view as "my turf" and got one in two kills. I nearly had an apoplexy on her. >.< 20 minutes later, I got mine. I killed one more for good measure and hearthed back to IronForge to celebrate with a mug of the finest ale I could find. I was so happy I was ready to cry.

Ive been farming for this since level 40 while waiting for an uldaman group. Im level 46 now, must have killed about 1.5k Scalding Whelps. Gotten about 5 greens and: Gazlowe's Charm But no pet...o well

EDIT: I GOT ONE...killed another 200 and finally got one so it is possible

My 41 Shammy has been grinding on the Scalding Whelps in the Badlands for a couple of levels now. Still no luck finding a Whelpling but it's a good place to farm none the less. GL EVERYONE :)

Spent over 6 hrs hoping for a drop. Have gotten maybe 3 greens, and one aquamarine. Did lvl up to 42 doing it, but so far no luck!

I love these things. Haven't had any success farming them myselves, but I have had the opportunity to take advantage of AH sellers who underestimate the value of this item. I got my own Dark Whelpling for just 5g in AH. That one I kept because I wanted a whelpling pet for myself. Later, though, I bought out another Dark Whelpling for 35g in AH, then resold it for 150g! That made my day.

Now whenever I go to AH I do a quick search for whelplings to see if another such opportunity will present itself. :)

now that im 60, i have one goal in mind, EPIC MOUNT. between guild runs at night i am camped out almost constantly in either the wetlands, swamp of sarrows, or dustwallow marsh farming for the wonderful cash co... err dragons in a week and a half i have managed to pick up 3 whelps; 2 crimson 1 emerald and they each sold nicely on the AH except for one crimson, but i have yet to find the elusive dark whelpling but i think its only a matter of time. if i keep this pace up i will have enough for my epic mount within a month which will make me a happy warrior btw if anyone on the alliance side of khadgar wants a crimson whelpling im selling it for a discount 90g if you mention this ad just pst cassassin and we can work something out

i'm a lvl 42 pally and i've been after 1 of these for 2 months now and Muradin server must not have any drops off of eather whelps that Allakhazam saies. I'm going to keep trying for a little while longer but this is rediculous.

Have I just got a 100GP fashion statement? Just activated this thing rather than selling it (I'm a Warrior, jealous of Huntsmen pets) and the little bugger just flaps there doing nothing. Are they good for anything other than distracting the eye during combat?

I first got one for 25G and used it, and about 2 weeks later I bought one for 2G and sold it for 55G! I'm saving for my mount and so far have 92 gold!

When you pick this pet up, it says "Tiny Black Whelpling". The picture here is of a "Dark Whelpling". Are these one and the same or are we looking at two different pets here?

I ask because the other whelplings have the same name when out as their drop. :)

Also when i read comments here, i went to sell it, so when i said 50g is the starting price, many ppl put *!@# on me for that...

All were saying that they would give no more than 1g for that...

no comments.. i know those bastards want to buy it from me and sell it for more money, but still u know its not nice...

I just helped a guild mate and after killing about 40 or 50 of the whelps we had two of these little pets in our bags. That's what I call luck, considering a 0.08% drop rate. ;)

Got one on my very first kill...wasn't even looking for it! I was going to duskwallow to grind for worn dragonscales and happened to kill a random whelp that was in my way.

I kept it for myself though...it's sooooo cute!

I dont know how the drop rates work but i have killed a ton of these things from BadLands to Dustwallow Marsh and I havent found a single one =/. Im still going to keep on grinding on these they have low health and if you take them down fast enough they dont do any dmg at all.

I've been in the Badlands for a week, just strolling around to grind some XP when I have free time. This are is always my first spot, I've killed over 700 of these buggers and nothing yet. However last night one respawned and I thought what the heck I'll kill it, got off my mount and what do I get? Not a whelp but a Dazzling Longsword. Go figure. It's on the AH right now on Anvilmar Alliance side, just send a tell to Talisien if you're interested.

Just went back to Badlands after about 5 levels to finish that irritating Fiery Blaze Enchantment quest and this dropped off the second whelp I killed. Of course, I'll most likely spend the next 2 hours just getting the heart for the stupid quest :-)

I've been grinding the Badlands whelps on and off for a week or more. Finally had one drop last night! I had just moved to the area north of the elites yesterday, since the south area had some people in it already. Killed about 30 whelps and it dropped.

Now I must decide if I want a very cool, but primarily cosmetic pet, or a stack of gold. I just drained my bank account buying a Hurricane bow. Too bad I can't play with it for a while, then sell it. Mine says "bind on use".

Just got mine today. I was only killing the whelps because i was going to those stones for the lvl 50 elite quest. A whelping was in my way, i kill, and it was there! now dont think im one of those people who get it on first kill. Ive spent the last 3 days farming the area, so i have over 1k kills of these things. But this just shows you, you can get one too!

Two of us grinded for a few hours about 800 slain and not one drop. Then a warrior looking for Mithril Deposits kills one and gets it >:(

Edit: 1400 killed and still none, Went there today and a hunter got his 10 men before I showed up. :(

It depends whether u want or dont want a pet, i think it's pretty useless.
It dropped for me after around 1200 killed. So that's a lot of time devoted

I've been grinding here for a day or two, trying to get one. And after killing 700 whelps, still no drop. Actually only one usefull trop so far, the Witchfury sword. But anyway, the whelps are easyli killed (I'm a lvl 44 hunter), so the xp rate are kinda nice - 25K xp pr. hour.

Just wanted to comment on the crappy drop rate of this item. (calculated that 1200 kills are nesecary to ensure a drop (could happen on first kill or on kill number 1200) :-| )

I was actually just screwing around farming small flame sacs off the whelplings near Ony. I got ambushed by a dragonkin patrol at low health as I was fighting a whelping, and of course... I died. I don't know why, but I thought to loot the whelpling just before I croaked... and there it was! Grabbed it before I died and totally forgot about the flame sacs, lol.... I need them now :(

I got one of these in the badlands while killing whelps looking for the black drake's heart. I saw the vendor was offering 25s for it, while someone else offered me 20s. Figured I had better check the AH and see what the going price was, good thing I did, huh? No idea what the use for it is, but if someone's gonna give me the big dough for it, bring it on!

Was farming whelps (and skinning and mining the area) for a few hours a couple nights ago. Killing the whelps both for the XP as well as hoping for a Dark Whelpling. Had to make numerous trips back to merch/mailbox to clean out my bags and was finally ready to quit. I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open. I was ready to head out of the area and had just called up my mount when I saw one more whelp. Figured why not. Went to kill it and sure enough, there was my Dark Whelping. I couldn't even auto-grab it as my bags were full. Had to throw something away just to fit it in. A mod I use showed that I had killed about 250 whelps, so I guess I beat the odds a bit.

Now I have to decide if I -really- want to keep it, or if I want to sell it. That's a loss of a lot of potential gold just to keep a pet. Albeit the coolest pet in the game (in my opinion) but still. We'll see.

I have been grinding Scalding Whelps from 40 - 47 so far and have yet to get a Dark Whelpling. I have got two epics (Underworld Band, Staff of Jordan), around 50 Blues and countless greens but no whelpling. The drop rate on alot of the items I have got is far worse than that of the whelpling....

EDIT: Finnaly, 80k XP into 48 one dropped. It's funny because mine dropped about 30 minutes after one dropped for a druid skinner.

I spent 3 and half hours trying to grind this one out so i could buy my riding skill for my mount... 2 lvl 60 hordes were camping the area and kept killing me. I died 10 times from those jerks. I finally got tired of nothing, did grind halfway to lvl 41 with my mage, but took off. I logged back on 2 hours later and in less than 5 min i got the drop. :) A long story short, just keep trying you should eventually succeed.

I've finaly got it. People was talking about that the whelplings could fight for you. Well as long as I know they don't. A guy who has one told me that but there is another cutie who fights for you, an Arcanite Dragonling. It's a trinket made of lvl 300 engineers. People must have got them confused. Not strange, the icon looks the same. So all you guys who like me want one just grab an engineer. :)

I remember, years ago, either in vanilla or, possibly early on in WoTLK, I got one of these as a drop. I didn't know it was anything special. I went ahead and opened the egg and started riding around with the pet. My daughter saw me playing with my little companion following along and almost screamed, "where did you get that?" When I
told her she explained that, at that time, on that server, people were paying about 3000G at the AH for one of them. I thought it was funny but none of my other toons has ever had one drop.

I might be lucky, but I dropped 3 before getting close to 1k kills. Also they're not worth more than 20-30g on my server (Everlook-EU), so I doubt they're this rare.

It took 407 scalding whelpling kills to have this pet to drop and roughly 45 minutes. I went to the bottom right corner of badlands (Lethlor Ravine) and just worked my way through the field.

I got mine today by accident while farming Badland whelps and elites for the "heart" quest item for Blaze enchant...
It must have been my 5th-6th kill of the day so I definitelly feel sad for all these that farm it on purpose... :(
(...on the other hand I got my BRD arena chest from Gorosh after 273 tries...)
