The drop rate is much lower than 50%.
Killed 7 Sea Sprays, 1 dropped.
Killed 6 Sea Elemental, 1 dropped.
So drop rate is around 15%-20%.

I agree the drop rate on these is much lower. I have killed 8 of each and recieved 2 core 50% might be on the enchanted water but definately not on the Water Elemental Core.

I'm pretty sure the drop rate shown on this is way wrong. I've been doing it for almost an hour and have only had 8 drop. so 30% is a bit generous.

Elementals are better then sea sprayers. I did half my drops south then went and did half my drops to the north of quest giver like some previous posters said. Completely not true. Both north and south are equally bad drop rates. Just go where there are less people farming the quest item. Here's the irony: because its a bad drop rate, nobody will group with you. And because no one will group with you, you'll be competing for mobs and take a REALLY long time to get the quest item. Doing this as a mana user at least has the benefit of getting water drinks. Prepare to grind for AT LEAST an hour. Sorry, thottbot can't save you time on this one. ;)

I found, that pulling them and killing them from within the water, swimming, gives a MUCH better result. Might have been a coinsidence, might not... anyway I did the quest and the giantzapping one in around 45 mins like this.

Above comment is spot on, nothing for ages then 2 in a row when they die in the water.

Uh...This might seem strange...but I had nothing for 30+ minutes also, and then I pulled one into the water and killed it, giving me them like crazy.

So uh...>_> True or not?

Well, biggest problem was to handle the mobs with my lvl 45 warrior ;)
Droprate seemed to be okay until i reached 9/10. I had to kill about 20-30 Ele's to get the last drop...

Well, looks like the drop chance is severely nerfed (or I'm having really bad luck). I've been killing these elementals non stop for the last hour and only 8 cores have dropped for me so far.

Well I started this quest and the drop rate sucked so I moved on to the quest where you shrink the giants. Once I finished that quest I figured I would give the elementals another crack. Right as I started killing them it started raining and all of a sudden the drop rate was almost 100%, Hmmm...

Drop seems even between Elemental and Spray. Doesn't matter if it's from water or not.
Pretty decent drop rate. about 15mins in gotten 6 now.

Bad drop rate from coast elementals. Elementals in 48,52 drop it frequently.

Drop rate is much lower than 15%. I've killed about 30 of these and only received 1 Core. Good supply of Globes and enchanted water though!

The spawn rate seems very low.

Definetily better drop when you kill them in water.

I was killing them on land and went 0/5 on sprays and 0/2 on elementals. Then switched to the water technique, far enough out that both me and the mob were at a depth that we would be swimming, and went 3/5 on sprays and 7/9 on elementals. So overall 0/7 on land and 10/14 in the water. Also when I first switched over to the water I got 6 in a row so that was pretty convincing going from 0/7 to 6/6.

As warlock having unending breath buff seemed to be a problem for droprates, maybe it checks if you have a breathbar.
Suddenly drops frequently when I'm under water and clicked away unending breath.
