Very nice staff indeed.
The resistances are really nice because then you don't have to gimp anything else to get those high resistances.

Class preferance, hmm, my opinion lock. THe high stamina leaves more option for life tap and the resistance proc is best for shadow spells and there are more mobs in the game with shadow resistance than say, Fire.

But ofcourse, it would be an excellent staff for all, expecially in pvp.

Great resistances. IMO Staff of ruins off Ossy is better, regardless this is an alright pick up.

Nice staff for any kind of caster if your guild isn't doing MC or BWL much. Otherwise mageblade + AV offhand have much better DPS value for raids.

Just got this staff recently. Since I'm a Holy Priest, will be using this staff mainly as part of my resistance gear set.

In order to make this new (and otherwise normally useless) spell penetration stuff needed, blizzard begins adding high prismatic resistances to future bosses. Something in the 150-200+ range. Thus, we are forced to pick up the new 5 peice AQ sets and other random AQ caster armors and weapons with spell penetration in order to continue to do "normal" damage. Mark my words. Mark my words...

I'm working on a resist and +spell damage PvP outfit for the BGs and would LOVE to be wielding this.

For PvE and raids tho, I certainly wouldn't try to kill myself gathering the DKP for it. I'd give druids the priority on this one, then all other caster types.

Well I'm a holy priest and I bidded on it until I won, eventhough I had the augur staff allready and Benediction ofc. No one in my guild protested. So who are you coming here to forbid priests on rolling/bidding? It's very nice for fights where you need resist and priests deserve some dps gear to.

Mages and locks have loads of stuff they can get, The staves from BWL for example. Shadowflame is much better than this. There is claw of chromaggus, then acolyte staff and all stuff in Naxx. Actually first one was won by a mage, one week later he replaced it with Staff of the shadow flame. What a waste on a rare 5% drop.

I didn't bid on the first ones that dropped because I wanted to give them to dps classes, I have never done that and never will. Dps classes get the first dips on that. But now that we have farmed BWL and lower AQ bosses for months I have seen as my right to get that stuff too as everyone is really well geared up and much better equipment is allready available. A piece from BQL or lower AQ would be replaced soon with higher gear. Also I have been healing in hundreds of raids for more than a year, I think I'm totally entitled to have same dps fun and get the gear for that.

So I have also started to collect dps gear and this is an excellent staff for that. Very good in BG, for the damage and resist. Only thing I miss would be it to proc from beneficial spells so I could have the proc on more often. It would be great to lower risk of fear beeing resisted but get that proc from heals as more than often I'm healing, not nuking in BG. But it sure is fun sometimes to put on dps gear, activate trinket and power infusion and blast 1600-1700 smite crits. You can two shot lower geared people. Not to mention smite is a 2sec cast and no one has any resist for holy :D

One interesting note is that mind vision and mind soothie are considered harmful spells and can cause it to proc. So you could spam those to make it proc before you attack, as those skills dont agro the target. The listed chance of proc is 15% and it does indeed proc a lot. It gives a nice thunderstruck sound when it procs so you dont miss it.

I don't know how useful the proc is for a holy priest, as I'm not really sure if there is holy resistance on mobs. There is no holy resistance on items, but I have seen mobs in BWL resist 50% of smite damage, so I guess mobs can have resistance to holy spells, because why else would the resist part of the damage. The spell hit check is binary, causing all or nothing to be resisted, not 50%. If their holy resist would be 0 they couldn't resist partial damage.

This would be even better for shadow priests as shadow resist is a very common resistance, at least it's the most useful in PVP to resist fear.

im a mage wearing this and to all you guys yes ive your target's resistence becomes 0 you can do extra dmg so in pvp ive some1 has like ermm 40 frost resistence you can get it 2 0 and do extra dmg

This staff is totally awesome for mages and locks. We both need the resistances because of our relatively low health, and the stats are the best for caster classes. I am a 60 mage and I love this! It is great for everything from pvp to instances. I love this staff!

I have read rumors that spell penetration from a proc can reduce a mobs resistance below 0. i.e. if the mobs resistance is at 0 and the staff procs, it is effectively reduced to -50, which would probably result is a slight damage increase.

Can anyone confirm?

This proc is much more use in the hands of a mage - Arcane missiles or scorch spam throw out a lot of spells quickly and so high chance to trigger. Once it triggers everyone in the raid benefits (given that the mob has resists high enough to warrant it).

I agree that most mobs are not scripted with resists but that is changing and I suspect that resists will become a key mechanic in the future. There are better staffs for a mage (or anyone) but 10 all resist is very nice even if it fails to make up for the lower damage.

This is a very rare staff though - you'll see it once every four months on average, so if this game mechanic becomes powerful your raid force will want this staff in the hands of a mage.

I have this staff, and the buff is only for the caster itself, it's a 8 second buff that will redure your target's resistence to all schools of magic by 50, not a buff on the target like the buff on the 8/8 dragonstalker. (atleast I believe the 8/8 dragonstalker is on the mob)

Izalac: The negative resist wasn't a rumor, blizzard just removed it from the game because of people with stacked -res getting ALOT more damage then they should have been in PvE and PvP. -res is still useful for fire mages/warlocks though since they can get partial resists. The proc on this is pretty useless to a frost mage though :)
Still trying to get a hold of mine :(

While I'm not too certain about this, it seems that Nightfall is triggered by each tic of Corruption rather than each cast. Otherwise, the 4% chance trigger is way off.
While I agree it's an awesome staff for mages, Warlocks should have equal rights. The 2 DoTs that are always put up are Corruption and Siphon(If you have talent) If you only have 2 locks, you end up using CoS and CoE rather than CoA. In any event, although mages have AM that can trigger the chance -resist, the DoT's can also trigger it.
That's just how it appears to me. Let me know if Corruption actually triggers by per cast or per tic. :)

Finally got a decent weapon... My fang of venoxis was long overdue to be replaced. As I already have some -resistance gear (two pieces of doomcaller), and CoS on, I can safely say that there are no negative resistances at all, that rumor is false.

It gives you a buff, Mystical Disjunction, which gives -50 resistances to your spells to your target. You do not need to keep target the same, you can switch targets while the buff lasts and it will still produce an effect.

It didn't seem to proc from any AoE I did, but it procced from curses. My guess is that it would proc on Corruption too, probably on a cast, and not a tick... I don't use corruption tho as I'm MD/Ruin spec.

It seems to proc irregularly, at least to me. When I got it, I got procs on my first shadowbolt on all the mobs in first two packs. Then it didn't proc at all till next boss. It continued to behave in this manner - that might have been only my luck though.

I like this staff :)

Considering you can no longer get negative resistances this staff is completely useless in most PvE situations as most mobs/bosses do not have any or very few resistances.

In the situation of a fire mage in molten core for example, having a warlock constantly putting Curse of Elements on the mobs will serve the exact same role as this would.

In PvP this staff does still not seem particularly useful from a mage's prospective as most mages rely on 'nuking' their targes. Given the short time in which mages generally kill their enemies it becomes unlikely that this would even proc.

Just got it last night for the following reasons:

1. Resistances are nice;
2. Stats are ok; and
3. In four months of BWL clearing we have only seen one SotSF.

The two things I wanted to confirm are that this staff triggers a self buff (i.e. does not reduce the targets resistances for everyone else) and it DOES trigger off each volley of arcane missiles. The proc rate is pretty high - I would guess maybe 15% - if you are spamming arcane missiles you will almost always have the proc active.

I have yet to run before and after dmg meters (was using a staff of dominance) - should be interesting to see how much the proc affects a whole run of an end game instance.

While the previous post was somewhat informative as to the nature of +damage items, my question is really to the benefit of -spell resistance items, referred to by many as "penetration". How does spell penetration work, and why is it a goof thing? Will I see a benefit by stacking -spell resistance gear?

By the way, the staff does proc on corruption. It hasa a chance to proc on any spell that successfully lands. The proc rate is pretty high--I seem to get one about 15-20% of the time.

well we got 2 of those so far in my guild and from what i can say its like one of the best staffs u can get about pve for pvp there are like 3-4 better staffs u can get though

Proc rate is very high. With scorch i was able to keep up the debuff for almost a full boss fight. This staff is insane for a firemage.

Some of the above posts seem to indicate that the debuff is on the mob, but it is actually only a self buff and only affects the person with the staff as far as I can tell.

Still a wicked nice staff tho. Got mine tonight.

this staff is the best for fire mages and conflag warlocks like my self (had mine for about a month now). the ressist and the stats make it one imba staff for pve. when MC and BWL are on farm like we have it , no one really bothers with COS and COE on the bosses and the mobs ,its just nuke handle and move onn. the proc triggers of any spell cast , it DOES NOT trigger of dot ticks and channeled spells ticks like arcane missiles and hellfire . the caster will get a 8 sec buff on him self that does not bennefit the raid at all. its not that good for world pvp thow, as it was said above, usualy mages and warlocks kill stuff before the proc triggers. but its nice for BG since u can get the procc of one enemy and start nuking some one else and get the bonus on him. really nice for fire specc casters since many ppl go PVPing with MC/BWL epics and have high fire ressist. id say the proc rate is some where around 20% on a spell cast.. or maybe im just lucky :))

Got this awesome staff today, stats are ace for pve and quite good for pvp. The proc is ace in pvp as its almost as good as locks curse. Procs often which is great, it can proc off each arcane missile and im guessing Arcane explosion too, so its very useful.

This is a great PvE staff. The Resistances are amazing, the +damage is decent and the Magical resistance reduction will probably great for upcoming content. And of course, the stats aren't bad either.

This is obviously not the best damage staff in the game (which is what I typically look for,) But the resist are tough to beat.

Very well rounded raiding EQ, good for any staff user, but the spell resistance reduction favors Warlocks and Mages in most raiding scenarios. This spell reduction (as in the new mechanic for proc spell reduction,) by the way, will drop resistances below zero as has been stated by Blizzard.

Don't get this thing if you are a mage.... it sux..... Staff of Shadow Flame >>>> this. Specially if you are a frost mage, its a chromatic buff in you called MYstical Disjunction everytime it procs, supposedly every time you hit someone it decreases their magical resistances(for you only, the reduction cannot be seen in the targets resistances list), i already test it with both fire/frost specs and every time it procs, my damage is still the same.

this is *NOT* the annihilator/nightfall for casters , the staff gives YOU a buff only giving YOU spellpen on your spells.
it makes a lightning bolt sound/animation on your character when it activates
it has no ICD for the proc, it can refresh its self
