how on earth do i get it open? i asked a lvl 45 rogue and he said it wouldn't let him unlock it even though he had enough skill

I believe what it "disenchants" into is what you get when you unlock/open it...

Would be nice to see the lockpick skill required to unlock these (and other "locked" items).

There is definitely something weird with this item. I tried to help a random stranger by picking this today (in a no-trade window), and I did not get any feedback at all. Usually if I try a box and my skill is too low, it gives a message. This just seemed to do nothing at all.

Lockpicking is not required - you can open these with silver skullkeys made by blacksmiths.

I've opened plenty of these at level 80 lockpicking. I don't know exactly what level is needed though.

Most of us rogues will be at least level 75 lockpicking, because that is needed to complete one of the rogue quests. When I reached 75, I stopped "practicing", and I would assume that is common among many rogues.

Every thing I've picked has had atleast a bit of cash in it, I don't think I've ever gotten one that's empty.

Here's how you pick it for someone:

Open the trade window with them.
Have them place it in "Will not be traded"
Use the lockpick skill on it
Have them place any rewards (some people charge) on there "Will be traded" area
Click trader
Wait for them to click trade

This seems fairly easy to open, since I did it with about 98 lockpicking.

Does anyone know if you get XP from picking chests in this way? I never seem to level up lockpicking unless I pick something myself.

As of the last patch, we now DO get skill points from the "Do Not Trade" slot.

Can I mail this from one character to another on the same server? My high level warrior could collect these for my rogue to level up on if I can.

Ok, I haven't been able to find a decent list so far on the net about lockpicking skill required for different lockboxes (would be good to have on thott - hint hint to the moderator or wtvr ;). From my exp tho, bronze are very low lvl, Iron is around 120, Strong Iron 145ish, Steel 180, Reinforced Steel I think is around 200, these figures are not exact, just estimates. My skill is now at 240 (max for lvl 48) and i dont often find things i cant open. Hope this helps. =)

Oh, and to clear up.. if u want a rogue to open one for you, put it in the "Will not be traded" slot, DO NOT give it to them :P

And yes, if the box is high enough lvl to be yellow or orange to the rogue on lockpicking skill, then it will lvl their skill up too, regardless of whether it's theirs or not.

Pickable (orange) at 25 skill, yellow at 50 skill, green at 75 skill (so it's probably grey at 100 skill; Had one on me when I was doing Buccaneer's Strongboxes for the quest.)

I got one out of a chest and when I unlocked it (I'm a blacksmith and had some silver keys on me I'd made a while back) the box was....empty! How can that happen? Everyone I've ever spoke to about it said there's always at least one item in them...or some cash or something lol

Id just like 2 note that i found an Ivycloth Tunic of the Owl in mine, and it wasnt on the 'disenchant' list.

1. Get a silver skeleton key. It will be in your keyring, which can be viewed by clicking the little key thing to the left of your last bag slot.

2. Right click on the key. Should have a glowing finger.

3. Click on the box - key will disappear (used). Contents will be open. Click on them. Box will disappear as well. Done.

I have had the same problem.. I was given a heavy bronze lock box. I picked the lock myself, and there is nothing inside.

For a rogue to open it go to the spell book, click picked lock icon, then point to the locked box. done. I got a lvl 25 dagger

Hi, ppl. The key "Silver Skeleton Key" is possible to build by a blacksmith (min LV 100). Whit this key you can open: right click on the key, so after, left click on the box. Well sometimes the key is more expensive that the item inside the box...

wow i got a rogue that has high lockpicking so first, blackfang, now heavy bronze lock box (with like...= = so nice, a void thingy pattern for my mage because i do tailoring) sooo nice these things

Also of note, after opening it and seeing nothing there, the box is still in my inventory....shouldn't it have disappeared after opening and taking whatever was out of it, or in this case, as there was nothing inside it to take, shouldn't it still disappear?

Is this normal or is it something I should try to bug support about? lol

I opened it with 80 in lockpicking, the max skill you get at 16 when you get the lockpicking ability. It was already green when I came back from the Redridge lockpicking training grounds.

Was doing the conclusion to sacred flame when it droped for my party member .Opened it and it had corruption and a nice green .I love when people i adventure with get good drops

I got two of these off named Ogres in Duskwood, in the same run through with my level 29 warrior. Opened them with silver skeleton keys that I made, and found two decent greens in one, and one in the other.

Just got my 1st empty one: I open it, nothing's there, but the loot window stays open, and the lockbox doesn't disappear from my bags. Changing my Auto Loot setting has no effect.

My feeble memory seems to recall a box that had something in it that could not be seen by every toon. Possibly it was visible only to a specific class or profession? Or maybe someone on a specific quest? Anyone recall something like that?

Lockboxes and chests can be opened by rogues using the Pick Lock skill learned at level 16. Your max level lockpicking skill is determined by the level of your character. The basic formula is 'char level x 5'. So, a level 16 rogue will have a max lockpicking level of 80, a 17 rogue would be 85 and so on up to a (currently) maximum of 300.

Once you have learned the lockpicking skill, you will also need a set of Thieves' Tools. You do not need to buy these, you should receive them during the 'lockpicking' quest.
Once the quest is completed, you can place the Pick Lock onto your toolbar from inside your spellbook. You then click this button and then click the lockbox/chest you wish to open.
As with most levelling professions, the items you want to unlock will be colour coded with the relevant chance of gaining a level point:- The word 'locked' will be red, orange, yellow, green or grey.

Red = Skill level too low
Orange = 100% chance of gaining a skill point
Yellow = Good chance of gaining a skill point
Green = A slight chance of gaining a skill point
Grey = No chance of gaining a skill point

Lockboxes can also be opened by using a skeleton key created by blacksmiths. These are NOT to be confused with the Skeleton Key which is used to open the entrance to the Scholomance instance.

The table below shows the minimum lockpicking skill level required to open each type of lockbox and which blacksmith skeleton key will open it (if possible).
