The Captain's Key is used to open the Captain's Chest, found inside the hold of the second ship anchored offshore in the pirate village south of Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris. It's on the 2nd deck -that is, the first deck below the top- BEHIND the stairs.

When you descend the stairs from the top deck turn right, then right again, then go all the way to the back. You'll have to clear 1 pirate from the top deck, and 2 pairs from the second.

Please note that this will NOT award any sort of XP or start a quest, you only get a green and a grey item. It's quite annoying to clear the small boats full of disarming mobs for some classes.

I actually found a green item and a blue item. The blue item I found was:

I recommend others to open the chest if you find the key, the reward could be a blue!

Does anyone know how to open those darn "dented footlockers" or is that only possible if you're a rogue? I've tried just about every key available.

Also, the "Pirate's Footlocker" is just a random drop in the area. I've had a couple of them with the Map fragments in them.

There are 3 pirate ships in the dock off the coast. One of the ships is incomplete. Don't go in that one. The other 2 ships are attached to each other. Go up the ramp to the first one. Then head over some planks to the next one. The chest is down one floor and around the corner to the right.

ive found 2 captain keys at one time... leaving the 2nd one in the pirate footlocker till i use the first one tho... fyi

I'm jealous of you folks who report decent green or blue items in that chest. I got the key last night and opened the chest; all that was in there was parrot skeleton!

i can solo 4 pirates using bladeflurry and evvasion.....im 45 rogue. they arent too hard at all. if ur druid or rogue, just stealth to the chest lol, its in the back of boat....*bring pots* (i also used 1 pot ><)

4. Did 3 times... only greenies inside
5. Chest respawn at the moment you close it

Note that the Captains Chest does not show up on your radar if you have the Find Treasure ability turned on.

It's on the 2nd level of the 2nd parked ship, not the 3rd level.

For those attempting to get to the chest, here's a very easy way to do it (I just soloed my way down as a 43 druid)

Clear your way on to the furthest boat. Pull the mob from top level by stairs out to the deck and kill him. Then go down and pull by line-of-sight and only one will come.

"what if I pull the entire ship? AHH"
no need to panic. simply head to the deck and cross over to the other ship. the mobs cannot cross ships and will stop attacking you, so you can heal up and avoid death.

Chest had a crappy green for me.

Like others have pointed out, this chest re-spawns within about 5 seconds. Grinding on the beach, I took 4 keys with me (because the key is unique, you can only have one in inventory at a time, but you can carry others inside of the boxes, so it is easy to have a bunch of these at once).

Its a nice change of scenery if you're grinind the beach, and the green drops are good for disenchanting and the occasional good AH listing.

That was the dumbest thing ever. I got to the chest and used my key to open it, only to find out that some ? horde had looted it before me. All that was left was a wooden leg.

If you're in the 40's or 50's, this is the best grinding spot available. First, grind on the pirates near the ships for as long as you can, you can stack multiple Pirate junkboxes so that you have multiple Captain's keys. While getting the junkboxes, you'll get a good amount of mageweave as well. inside the Chest, you'll find a green or 2 with some money, today i found a BoE blue (Wirt's third Leg, sold for 30g) now, also inside the pirates junkbox is sometimes a piece of a map fragment, keep farming these until u have 3+ complete maps. after you do that, right click the map to start a quest to find this treasure chest, "Cuergo's gold". swim south to the far south east tip of Tanaris, theres a place where u can summon these 5 pirates to fight that are guarding the treasure, theres always something good in that box. as soon as your done, right click the next map you have to start the quest again. i do this a lot, and i get so much loot from killing the pirates (mageweave) unlocking the captain's chest, and the Cuergo's gold chest

I was doing the pirate hat quest, got the key. Took about 90 minutes and 2 deaths to get into the ship as a lvl 42 hunter. The chest had an earring (grey) and field plate boots.

The chest is on the second ship in the middle level to the east end of the ship. The chest contained a "wooden peg leg", some coin, and moon juice.

Pet pathing to the second ship sucked. The pet kept trying to go under the first ship and would pull agro from the ship. I had to dismiss the pet and then call it back. It pathed ok once it was on the second ship.

I went through all the effort as a 44 lock soloing it (didn't die once :) ) and got some crap stuff from the chest. Imo..the only reason worth doing it is for the xp.

I got the key from a swashbuckler. Inside was a 2 handed staff and a wooden leg.

when you get to the second ship be verry carefull couse one you enter and go down the stairs two goblins pop up from below....they go throu the stairs and then if you are almost at the second floor you become the fictim of a 5 mob agro 45 level... Its realy hard I did it with 45 level warrior from the 10th try... I didnt die bit it was a lot of runing and swiming

It is on the second ship in the bay, go to the right, down one flight of stairs. Second lvl behind the stairs.

Does this key disappear once you use it to open the chest?

Does the chest disappear after someone opens it and respawns later or could two people who both have the key open the chest, one right after the other?

02/08/07 Edit: Checked this for myself. Yes, the key is consumed in its use (you don't have to click on the key and then on the chest, if you have the key in invnetory, you will get the golden cog and arrow ("use") icon when you mouse over the chest). I got some coin, 2 wooden legs and Mistscape Leggings (sp? lvl 40 CLoth leg piece (green)). I forgot to check if the chest disappears or not. If I do it again, I'll check.

Soloed this as 46 rogue without a problem (use sap to split the pairs).

Main reward I got was plans for frostiger blade (blacksmithing).

I opened it and got Plans: Mithril Shield Spike. I haven't put it on AH yet but supposedly it goes 15g-25g so I'm happy.

As luck would have it I got another key right after I opened the chest. Nothing special this time but a green and a couple other lil' things.

As indicated below, this is on the second ship. Specifically, it is one level down from the deck (middle level) in the bow of the ship. You do not need to cross the middle level to the opposite stairs or go to the lower level at all. You will probably have to fight two mobs at once a couple of times to get to it but with careful pulling should not be any worse than that.

There is also a dented footlocker that spawns on the deck of the ship but that is a rogue-only thing.
