Diablo II: Resurrected - Advanced Vector Extension Update
24 giorni fa
released a short update
regarding their work on fixing an issue with advanced vector extensions which prevents users with very old computer processors from playing Diablo II: Resurrected. Although the issue hasn't been fixed yet, they have identified a potential solution which will be tested over the next few days.
Advanced vector extensions are computation instruction sets introduced in 2011, which allow parallel processing by multiple cores in a single CPU. Unless you do a lot of serious overclocking, you've probably never heard of it, but the technology is used in virtually all mid to high end Intel and AMD CPUs in use today (i3/i5/i7/i9, etc), and it's features have become steadily more common in Windows, applications such as web browsers,
radar image processing
, and games such as Diablo II: Resurrected. Given that the technology is over a decade old now, you'd actually be pretty hard pressed to game on a computer which didn't have it, but some users found themselves in that position, still able to play the Diablo II open beta despite using processors well below the
minimum system requirements
. Others were a little more confused, using hardware which outperformed the system requirements but predate the creation of AVX, resulting in the game not working despite ostensibly exceeding the requirements.
Though by this week's launch something changed, and those players found themselves
unable to get into the game
. Blizzard has confirmed that this was due to optimizations made before launch, but unintentional, and they've been working on a way to fix it in order to allow more people to enjoy the game. This appears to be a tricky issue however, which could impact other users, so they're continuing testing before rolling it out. Unfortunately, that's of little comfort to people still waiting to play the game.
So if you're hoping to get the authentic Diablo II experience by playing on the same machine you used in June of 2000, you may have to wait a bit longer, but this should also serve as a warning - although it may be fixed in Diablo II: Resurrected, many games and applications which utilize AVX can result in severe deoptimizations or stop working altogether without it, so no matter how strong your computer clock speeds may be, at some point you may need to consider upgrading to hardware from a more recent decade.
Hello everyone -
We wanted to provide an update on the Advanced Vector Extension (AVX) items from the dev team after some further developments from this past weekend. The team believes they have a potential fix, but this goes beyond just AVX specifically. The fix could potentially affect all users, even those outside of not having AVX support, so we are wanting to make sure we do proper testing.
While CPUs without AVX are below our minimum spec, we want to try to ensure as many people as possible can play. Setups without AVX were working in Beta. In optimizing the game, we inadvertently included the need for AVX for launch. QA is going to spend another few days of testing across all of these scenarios and setups in an effort to ensure we are not impacting existing players.
We will update this thread once we have an update from the testing over the next few days.
We apologize for the added delay and appreciate your patience.
For those that may have already purchased but would prefer to purchase post fix, we do recommend reaching out to Customer Service for a refund.
