PvP Honor System Possibly Fixed in WoW Classic Season of Mastery

After two weeks of WoW Classic Season of Mastery, players were speculating that the PvP Honor System is incorrectly rewarding Rank Points. Blizzard shared a Blue Post that they were investigating the issue and now the issue seems to be resolved.
Double Rank Points
Heading into WoW Classic Season of Mastery, Blizzard made
many changes to the Classic Formula
, one of which is double rank points for participating in the PvP Honor System. This decision was made so that players can rank faster, to compensate for a shorter 12 month cadence. In the
Blue Post for official changes in Season of Mastery
, Blizzard said the following --
We have doubled the maximum amount of weekly ranking progress gained. Dedicated players who consistently finish each week at the top of their realm and faction’s rankings each week can expect to move through the ranks roughly twice as fast as was possible in Original World of Warcraft.
Season of Mastery players assumed this meant
double rank points
at the end of each week, as that is the only way this could be interpreted. Doubling rank points would accomplish the "six week rank" which
Blizzard talked about in a Development Update
. Typically, it would require a minimum of twelve weeks in Classic, and doubling rank points would cut that in half to six weeks.
Maybe You Need to be 60? Maybe It's Half Decay?
At the end of week one of Season of Mastery, players began questioning whether it was actually double rank points. Using online honor calculators, players realized that the ranking points rewarded were
exactly the same as original Classic
. So the community began theorizing why this was the case. Many speculated its because lower level characters have different ranking formulas than level 60 characters.
The most prevailing theory was, maybe Blizzard implemented half decay instead of double rank points? Cutting the honor decay in half would technically accomplish the same thing double rank points would, making it a six week rank. The issue is, if Blizzard implemented half decay, we wouldn't be able to calculate that until the second week's reset.
Blizzard Investigates The Issue
When the second weekly reset hit North American realms, players were extremely upset. The calculators showed that neither rank points were doubled and decay was not cut in half. Everything was exactly the same as it was in original Classic. Blizzard responded on the Classic General Forums to threads asking why the system hadn't changed, and shared the following --
We’re investigating this. Not sure yet whether there’s a bug or something to hotfix, but we’ll let you know as soon as we get to the bottom of it.
Not long after this blue post was shared, WoW Classic Season of Mastery realms went offline for a brief period. Whether or not this offline time was Blizzard fixing the issue is completely unknown. Either way, when the servers came back online, North American players saw no changes to their honor page. Meaning they are stuck with two weeks of half the rank points they should have had and much lower in PvP Rank that they would be otherwise.
EU Players Calculate It Might Have Been Fixed
Because the European realms have their weekly reset on Wednesdays, their reset took place after the
. These players on EU Realms have calculated that they were rewarded the correct amount of double rank points and the PvP Honor System is now working properly in WoW Classic Season of Mastery.
The conversation is mostly taking place on reddit
and private discord servers, where many players have shared their frustration with what's happened. Blizzard has not updated players with any new information on this issue.
Other calculations from higher ranked players in EU are saying that not only was rank points doubled, but so was honor decay. Meaning there would be no change in the amount of time required to reach rank 14 in comparison to Classic. If this is the case,
then the issue might not actually be resolved at all
. The community is still doing calculations to see what exactly was changed, as of right now it seems like it was just a two time multiplier to the entire formula, applying to rank points and decay.
