I was writing a bit recently on the nature of memory, and something occurred to me.
You remember that Level 60 Troll Warrior that gave you the last couple of gold you needed to buy your mount back when you were level 40?
I sure do, but the sad part is, I'm sure he doesn't remember you.
In my personal case, I was selling
Pietraluna Minore
s in Orgrimmar on my Shaman to raise money to get my mount when I turned level 40. I had started playing the game as the same time as most of my friends, and didn't get into a guild or anything where I had made any noticeably higher level friends, and this warrior got in touch with me to buy some moonstones to up his Blacksmithing after the fact. We haggled over the price for a little while, and as I was making the transaction (a handful of gold for some moonstones, I don't remember how much on either end), I told him that I was saving up to get my mount, and he tossed me an extra 10 gold at the time.
Just a moment ago, we were haggling over whether he'd pay something like 2 gold for the stones or 3 gold, but when he heard that I was only a little bit away from getting my mount, he gave me drastically more than the price difference we were haggling for.
I regret to say that I can't remember this guy's name (it was back before the release of AQ), but I'm sure that he doesn't remember me at all. So here's to you, random level 60 troll warrior, thanks for the leg up.
See, he was a pretty successful raider (by his gear, I assume), and it was virtually nothing to him to give away a couple of extra gold, (It was more significant than it would be now, but not huge) and yet I remember it to this day.
The one way nature of this encounter fascinates me. If you've ever wanted to leave a WoW legacy, I'd hang out in Orgrimmar with a ton of gold, and give it to the polite people that ask and are willing to engage you in conversation. I can think of no more reliable way to tell, at level 40, if someone is going to go far in World of Warcraft.
