What Shadowlands Tank Should You Play in the Castle Nathria Raid?

Tanking Uptime: 50%

Positioning: This will be dictated by your raid strategy. However, your aim will always be to have a safe space near the pillars in the room to get out of Line of Sight of the boss during Urlo Assordante.

Damage Intake: ~85% Physical, 15% Shadow. *Note: Mechanics were changed just before Shadowlands launched so this value is speculative, value will be skewed higher to Shadow for Mythic.

Tanking Uptime: 100%. There will be 2 targets to tank constantly, one for each tank.

Positioning: In Phase 1 you want the bosses stacked. Phase 2 drag Bargast out for Squarciatura Anima and Ombre di Bargast. Phase 3 bosses stacked yet again with slight movement to remove stacks of Pietra Devastante.

Damage Intake: ~95% Physical, 3% Shadow, 2% Nature

Tanking Uptime: 50%

Positioning: You will want to have the boss in a position that allows the raid to spread around it. Before the boss reaches 100 energy, you will want to position it to the side of the room to give the raid space to move.

Damage Intake: ~60% Physical, 40% Shadow.

Fame CrescenteConsumoArtificer Xy’MoxThis is a 3 phase encounter where the boss will do a different key mechanic in each phase. This fight requires frequent positioning changes from the tanks in order to simplify mechanics affecting the entire raid.

Tanking Uptime: 50%

Positioning: You will ideally want to have the boss positioned to the side of the room and have a portal placed nearby so you can use it to gain distance from the raid with Glifo della Distruzione.

Damage Intake: ~75% Physical, 20% Arcane, 5% Shadow. There are slight variances in your damage taken based on if mechanics that go on “random” players hit you.

Tanking Uptime: 90%. There will be brief respites from tanking between add waves in Phase 1 if your DPS is high enough.

Positioning: During Phase 1 your positioning will be rather dynamic to pick up waves of adds. During Phase 2 (Whilst the Shade is active) you will be moving around the room out of Resti Infuocati patches.

Damage Intake: ~73% Physical, 25% Fire, 2% Shadow.

Tanking Uptime: 60% Whilst the boss is a simple 50/50 split, the Harnessed Spectre adds require a tank and should be taken by the non-boss tank as they apply a debuff which increases damage taken from Esposizione Desideri.

Positioning: You will aim to keep the boss near the edge of the room so that you can ignore the Rete dell'Animum (when the Container of Sin is at 33% power). When the Concentrated Anima adds spawn, they should be near melee, however if they are not you will need to preposition there as the Harnessed Specter adds are immobile.

Damage Intake: ~50% Physical, 50% Shadow.

Tanking Uptime: 99%. The only time there is nothing to tank are very short periods on the final boss.

Positioning: You will aim to keep the bosses near each other, but aiming to ensure that Lord Stavros does not charge into the raid with Affondo Evasivo

Damage Intake: ~90% Physical, 10% Shadow. There are also trace amounts of Nature damage. (Mythic: Shadow damage taken will increase from the Febbre Danzante mechanic)

Positioning of the boss is also vital to ensure mechanics are executed correctly.

Tanking Uptime: 100% Both tanks will always be hit by the boss (if they are on top of each other). If there is nobody within 5 yards of the main target of the boss he will hit that target twice.

Positioning: Ensure that Sludgefist is not positioned near any pillars as his regular mechanics can break them prematurely. When he is at full energy he will fixate on a tank and then charge. This charge needs to be aimed at a pillar.

Damage Intake: 100% Physical

Pugni GigantiMythicCatenaStone Legion GeneralsDuring this fight there will be two bosses, but only one is active at a time for Phase 1 and 2, however you will have adds spawning. In Phase 3 both bosses will be active, but no adds spawn.

Tanking Uptime: 90%. There will be short periods where no adds are available in Phase 1 and 2. In Phase 3 your tanking uptime will be 100%.

Positioning: This will be dictated by your raid strategy, however your aim will always be to have a space in the room near the bosses for the raid to place the Lama Perversa, Eruzione Riverberante and Combo dello Spacca Rocce mechanics.

Damage Intake: ~60% Physical, 25% Shadow, 15% Nature.

Positioning: Your positioning in each phase will change. During Phase 1, keep the boss near the edge of the zone you are currently in to allow for easy movement out of Devastazione. During Phase 2, keep the boss near a mirror to allow for easy movement out of Mano della Distruzione. During Phase 3, keep the boss near the edge of the area to allow for more space to move out of Mano della Distruzione.

Damage Intake: ~65% Physical, 35% Shadow.

Overall Thoughts:

Many bosses: Where there are periods of magic burst damage on the raid Area Antimagia will mitigate these.

Hungering Destroyer: Ineluttabilità della Morte will prevent the knockback from Fenditura Annientante (Heroic/Mythic mechanic) allowing you to soak multiple with ease.

Artificer Xy’mox: Scudo Antimagia can prevent Glifo della Distruzione from applying.

Sire Denathirus: If you pre-cast Ineluttabilità della Morte for the Intermission you will not be slowed.

• Casting Parola di Gloria either costs you Holy Power which is a direct loss of Scudo del Virtuoso uptime, or is infrequent as you will be waiting for Luce Brillante stacks to make it free.
• At lower haste levels can have gaps in Scudo del Virtuoso uptime, making it temporarily squishy

Huntsman Altimor: Benedizione della Protezione Magica + Scudo Divino can negate Squarciatura Anima entirely.

Hungering Destroyer: Benedizione della Protezione Magica + Scudo Divino can be used to clear Fenditura Annientante (Heroic/Mythic).

Artificer Xy’mox: Benedizione della Protezione Magica + Scudo Divino can prevent Glifo della Distruzione from applying.

Artificer Xy’mox: Benedizione della Protezione Magica + Scudo Divino can be used to clear Trappola di Stasi.

• Applies Tocco Mistico
• High amounts of self-absorbs via Birra Celestiale

• Lowest max health of any tank making them susceptible to damage over time effects

Huntsman Altimor: Birra Celestiale will be available for each Squarciatura Anima cast, you can also Meditazione Zen / Birra Fortificante / Diminuzione del Dolore to further enhance the benefits and ensure the add spawns on high or full health.

Huntsman Altimor: Paralisi works as a CC for the Ombre di Bargast.

Sun King’s Salvation: Evocazione: Statua dello Yak Nero is great for gathering initial threat on the waves of adds that spawn in Phase 1 of the encounter.

Sludgefist: Brewmaster is the best main tank option for this encounter and will significantly reduce the damage on the co-tank.

Guardian Druid

Strengths

Weaknesses

Utility

• High health
• Self healing
• With Volontà dell'Ordine Naturale they can be the most defensive tank option
• High DPS tank via weaving between forms.

• Strengths depend on the choice of covenant of the player
• Low DPS if you do not weave between forms.

• Raid mobility boost with Ruggito Impetuoso
• Combat res with Pronto Ritorno
• Vortice di Ursol (Resto affinity)
• Tifone (Balance affinity)
• Intrappolamento di Massa
• Poison & Curse removal with Rimozione Corruzione
• Enrage removal with Pacificazione

Many bosses: Ruggito Impetuoso can help with raid movement.

Huntsman Altimor: Letargo works as a CC for the Ombre di Bargast.

Sun King’s Salvation: Vortice di Ursol / Tifone to keep the Soul Infusers away from Kael’thas. Intrappolamento di Massa will also work but will break quickly from damage.

Council of Blood: Should any add die near Castellan Niklaus (if he is the last boss) he will be enraged. This can be removed with Pacificazione.

Sludgefist: Guardian Druid is a very strong main tank option for this encounter and will significantly reduce the damage on the co-tank.

Vengeance Demon Hunter

Weaknesses

Utility

• Can have high amounts of AoE DPS with certain builds.
• Applies Marchio del Caos
• Fairly consistent amount of self healing.
• High mobility
• Passive damage reduction (enhanced further via Inchiostro Viscoso)

• Limited uptime on Aculei Demoniaci can lead to spikes in damage taken (this can be countered with the Marchiatura Ardente build but it comes at the cost of DPS)
• Low DPS on Single Target

• Marchio del Caos
• Sigils! (Sigillo del Silenzio, Sigillo della Miseria, Grip)
• Purge with Consumo Magia
• Imprigionamento
• Ranged Interrupt with Distruzione

Overall Thoughts:

Huntsman Altimor: Imprigionamento works as a CC for the Ombre di Bargast.

Huntsman Altimor: Strong option for tanking Bargast as very effectively mitigate the damage from Squarciatura Anima with Marchiatura Ardente

Sun King’s Salvation: Sigil of Chains and Sigillo della Miseria can be used to control the Soul Infusers.

Protection Warrior

• Scudo Saldo provides you with a very high amount of Physical damage reduction when active
• Rifletti Incantesimo can reflect or negate mechanics
• High mobility

• Can be susceptible to prolonged periods of magic damage

Artificer Xy’mox: Scintilla d'Ultraluce can be reflected back to the boss with Rifletti Incantesimo and stop further bounces.

Lady Inerva Darkvein: Rifletti Incantesimo can reflect Ripensamento back to the boss (thus negating the mechanic).
