Nameplates being limited to a 20 yard radius is atrocious for ranged class specs. This is such a weird thing to be so determined about keeping the same considering all of the other changes that have been made to the game. A lot of the changes are optional, why isn't this? The maximum distance should be limited by the range of your spells. if anything. Keep the default set to 20 for purists.👎
Sigh, one more stupid decision made for the sake of "immersion". When will all these classic fanbois realize that retail is different from classic because IT'S BETTER. There are literally dozens of QoL and UI improvements that wouldn't affect the gameplay at all, but would just make the game more fun.Mob HP, dot timers, reasonable nameplate distance, accurate ammo tracking (telling me I have * shots left is very helpful), in-dungeon maps, auto-tracking quests, opening the quest log from tracked quests, etc etc etc.None of these would actually affect the gameplay, only make it more enjoyable.
Next step: enforce 1024x768, dialup connection and remove 64bit support.
Anyone know if you can just manually edit this in the wtf file?
I find it pretty compelling that there's video evidence from vanilla showing that the nameplate range was further than 20 yards. I really hope there will be a blue post and a fix for this soon. A 20 yard nameplate range is simply a bug, not a vanilla feature. As a hunter, it seems particularly insane that I'm required to stand 15 yards from a mob to do ranged dps, but nameplates disappear at 20 yards. That leaves me with just 5 yards to work with, and realistically, as ranged, I want to stand as far from a mob as possible when I first pull it. Especially in the sub level 10 territory, where I have no pet.
I think they should cap it to 30 yards. 40 would obviously be the most ideal, but I can understand why people wouldn't like that. Too close to retail, too big of a change, too easy to see enemy players, I'm sure there are a number of reasons people would come up with. But having it at 20 means classes that take talents to set their ranged abilities to 40 yards have their effective range cut in half. You are less efficient than a melee character by standing at range because you must take more time to find a target to focus, or have a coordinated group that always marks who to focus or assist on. 30 is a good compromise, because that's the default range most abilities are at. If you want to go further with talents, you do so at the technical downside of not being able to see nameplates. I think more research should be done on whether 20 was the limit in Vanilla before they make a decision, though.

Do Blizzard really think this looks like Vanilla?Looking at this image it would be very difficult to see if this is Retail or Classic, but nooooo, the one thing Blizzard wanted to be different was your ability to see the nameplates of the enemies you're fighting.. - that's what is least Vanilla about this Image to Blizzard, apparently. It's the inconsistency that's my main issue.
I really don't see the point in removing (or not adding) QoL updates. Things like this don't change the game fundamentally, they just make it less tedious which I can't imagine anyone being against. Most of these things were added in later patches because they were broken in vanilla to begin with.
Vanilla experience is what we are here for. But! This is 2019, we are old lazy bastards. Go easy on us, Blizzard! Give us some QoL things. This was my initian reaction about hotfix.I changed my mind while typing this. Classic is too easy, we dont need such new things. Not a big deal, if i cant efficiently multidot mobs from max range for peak dps. I dont need it in classic. This game is a casual paradise, only investment it demands is time.I dont want it to become a chore with all this abundant modern tools and left to rot cause there is nothing left to overcome and conquer and all my achivement feel dull and empty, like in modern games.Something like that.
What's the addon that lets you see classcolor on friendly player names? (Instead of nameplates)
As a hunter using ThreatPlates, this is absolutely terrible. I was looking for a way to increase nameplate distance weeks ago, but the command hadn't been discovered. I sure would've used the command if I knew about it! ThreatPlates shows your threat level on each nameplate with coloring (green is low threat, red is high threat). It's immensely helpful for hunters so that we don't take aggro from our pet, and so that we can tell whether we can safely multi-shot without getting aggro! Having to be within 20 yards for it to work is so retarded! I play better when I'm at 20 yard range because of the nameplates, that's how important it is. So I guess I should just spec out the MM talents that increase my range since the threatplates are better than actually having range?
Well, I'm level 60, dungeon is HORRIBLE with this limitation, so as predicted I won't pay for another month.Good bye, enjoy your sadism, Blizzard Fun Police.
I think 20 yards is excessive in its limitation the distance should be equal to the max base range of long range abilities 30 yards.
