This quest is also one of those "easily soloable even without the proper level requirements".

What you do is this: (I did this as lvl 36 warrior and didn't even sweat about it, I assume anyone at lvl 28-30 could do it)

Before you accept this quest, pull a swamp mob or two into the guards. They will be very busy. Accept the quest and strafe or back to the nearest tower. If you don't keep hitting Hendel, he will drop you and run back to the camp. When you get close to the tower, the guards there will assist you. When Hendel reaches about 25% health, he will give up and run back to the camp. If the guards there are still aggroed at you, pull them towards the tower as well, let the guards there deal with them.

You will get 6400 XP, a gold and 30 silver, and a nice little ring from the cute miss Proudmoore upon completion. Nice, for a few minutes of work, huh?

The way I did it, which was on accident really was like this. I tried pulling mobs in to distract the guards, which worked, but I'm only a level 29 priest, so I couldn't kill Hendel and the guards still aggroed to me after they killed the raptor I dragged in. So when I ran away and they dropped from me, I went back to try again, only the 2 guards were now friendly to me. I couldn't attack Hendel myself, but they both turned on him and kicked his ass. I still received credit for completion.

make sure you are ready to kill him and complete the quest the first time. The manual reset (abandon + receive again) resets you all the way back to menethil bay steps.

I didnt even bother dragging a mob over before accepting the quest. Just accept, tag him and get over to where the guards are at the tower. Then just keep killing until your finished. The guards at the tower will help you fight :-D.

As a Draenei Shaman, I found a nice trick is to drop a Stoneclaw totem to slow him down a bit, I also accepted it in GhostWolf form, so I can stay ahead, pulling the lot of 'em to the tower, and let the guards handle the rest. I started this quest line at level 31, and did it with no major difficulties, and did about 33% of my level 31 experience all in about 2 hours. Not bad at all.

No need to drag him anywhere.

Pull a random mob into Hendel's camp and the guards will defend you. When said mob gets to around 15% health accept the quest to subdue Hendel. The guards will stay in defend-the-quester mode and they'll kill him for you. I've used this method on probably 8 different toons.

If you abandon (or fail I guess) the quest (I lost aggro and he became an invalid target), you will need to wait a little bit for him to respawn. No need to run anywhere.

I completed the quest at level 28, in order to do it I failed one time, then came back when one guard was fighting another and he wasn't back up yet. Then I helped kill the remaining guard at the tower, and waited for Private Hendel to respawn. When he respawned I talked to him, hit him once and ran to the tower nearby with guards. The guards and I got him down and then he ran back to the spawn site. I followed him there and finished the quest when Lady Proudmore showed up with the wizard and a guard. This might not work for everyone, but it did for me, you get a nice ring for completion of the quest.

Here is what you need to do. I followed the posts above and it worked great. You need to go to the mage in the tower just outside the city to get the part of the quest to kill Hendel. Next you go to his spawn spot and accept his question mark. He then pops another quest. When you accept this one, they aggro. What you want to do is to accept the quest and haul a to the guards. Hendel will stay on the dock but his 2 buddies will follow you. Get the guards to kill these 2. When they are dead, the quest will fail and Hendel will despawn. You need to wait like 5-10 minutes for him to re-pop. Do the same thing again and he comes with you this time to the guards. Make sure you get the 1st hit on him and they will take him down to around 40%. Once this happens, he'll give up and run back to the dock. Follow him back and you'll see the 2 guys there that let you finish your quest. Very easy to do. Thanks to all above that figured this out.

Camp at X44, Y24.
Before entering camp go cross other side (behind 2nd tree, put darkfang spider to road. Guards will help attack. Let them do the hard work

Quickly Go to Private Hendel and hand in quest. Accept next quest.
Fight him a little (he will calm down)

I know this is not part of the quest, but the King is actually in the game. The Naga and the Defias teamed up to take down the king, and he is alive and being held in Alcaz island. When you go in Alcaz Island, there are 3 pathes. Take the middle one and find the stairs that go downward. Keep following the path straight until you see water. Jump into the water, and swim until you can go up. When you get out of the water, "Varian Wrynn" <The King of Stormwind> Is standing there. No quest, no talking to him. If your Horde, you can kill him and hes not hostile, But no loot.

I just did this as a level 31 warrior by using the "lure a monster over and have the guards fight it" strategy, and I have a tip.

I pulled the spider over, and the guards went after it, and I went after Hendel. I got him down to the part where the others appear to finish the quest. The first time I did that, the two guards came back after me, and since I didn't have enough life left, I died. I clicked "release spirit" right away, and got the "Quest failed" message.

The second time, I had the same thing happen - guards attack spider, I beat up on Hendel, other guys come in and start their spiel, and the guards came back to fight me and killed me. However, I noticed as I was fighting the guards and died, the Archmage and Proudmore were still going on with their spiel. So I waited to release my spirit until after they were done, and I could see the yellow "?" over one of their heads. And I got the "Quest Completed" notification (it says "Subdue Private Hendel - 1/1" or something). THEN I released the spirit.

When I ressurected, the quest was still marked completed, and when I got back to the tower, I could proceed on with the quest as normal - the mage and Proudmore were there, the yellow "?" was in view, and I completed the rest of the quest.

So if you die after Hendel is subdued, give the other two time to complete their speeches before you rez - it might just save a lot of frustration and you may not have to try again.

Apparently Bizzard has gotten wise, and will no longer allow for you to drag Hendel and his henchmen to the nearby guards...

Step 1:
Visit tower, get buff, blah blah blah, Locate Hendel.

Step 2:
Talk to Hendel, get quest to defeat him.

Step 3:
Engage and hit Hendel (make SURE you hit him), only once is nessecary, but don't hit the guards. Proceed to run across bridge twoards friendly guards, they should all stop following you before they reach the guards (Hendel should follow further, however) and return to stationary positions.

Step 4:
Wait a little bit (recover damage dealt to you), then return, Hendel should be on the bridge. If you were like me (both times I did this quest) You won't be able to hit him with ranged or melee. Everyone should still be hostile at the tents.

Step 5:
Aggro his cronies, but do not hit them, train them twoards friendly guards, crossing water instead of bridge. Run until they cease following.

Step 6:
Immediately return to the camp, stay away from aggro range and wait. Hendel should stay hostile while his cronies should revert back to friendly. They will engage Hendel and take him down (With ease i might add), but you will still get credit, seeing how you engaged (And damaged) him earlier.

Proudmoore will arrive, they will subdue him and viola! Quest complete!....And that's how I defeated Hendel with a 51 dmg Sinister strike =)

i found it easy - level 34 mage.

here's what you need to do:

1. get the quest to defeat hendel.

2. run to the guards at the tower to the south east.

3. kill the 2 guards that follow you with the help of the 'friendly' guards.

4. abandon the quest - take it again from hendel.

5. kill him before his guards respawn.

6. just get him down to about 30% and he gives up.

7. 3 dudes come and deal with hendel.

8. talk to the 2 people and you get 2 rewards.

9. quest complete!

After drawing the guards away and returning to kill Hendel he was green to me. I abandoned the quest and he disappeared. He came back after a minute or so. Here is what I did to defeat him.

1. I aggroed a nearby raptor.
2. Run to the guards near Hendel.
3. While they are engaging the raptor I accepted Hendel's quest.
4. By the time the raptor is dead you will have Hendel low enough in health that Jana appears.

I can assure you that you can get this quest back from Pvt. Hendel any number of times: I just did six! Just abandon the quest and you will make Hendel disappear, but he will return with an exclamation mark to give you the quest again. But it takes about FIVE FULL MINUTES for Hendel to respawn! I think that's why some players are thinking the quest is broken or something. Also, there IS a weird situation where if they give up chase on you, they remain red but can't be attacked anymore: don't freak out like I did, just abandon the quest. Hendel will disappear, and come back in 5. Do some fishing. You can fish right across the little pond and watch for Hendel while you do it. :)

One more thing! :) Try that trick explained above where you pull a monster into Hendel's two guards before accepting the quest. It's definitely a better strat for a solo player than trying to lure them all into the tower guards. The run to the tower is not real short and if you're soloing, it's easy to lose aggro or get killed.
This is one of the best quest series of all, and you should definitely finish it. It's a really fun series, and the rewards for this last part here are very high, in gold, rep, xp, and that awesome ring!

Did this as a 29 priest. Just shielded and inner fire'd before initiating the fight, then ran back to the North Point Tower; the guards killed him for me :)

Hendel can be found at 45, 25

soloed this very easily as a 36 rogue. I simply used evasion just as the fight started and spammed sinister strike. once his health gets down halfway or so, the theramore guards stop attacking and jaina proudmoore shows up and takes him away. My health bar never got less than 3/4.

i followed what everyone said, talk to Hendel to activate the quest, then I pummeled him for a bit until his guards start to wear me down, then i started to back up toward the guard tower; like everyone said, only the guard followed, and Hendel went back to the tent after few hundred yards; then as soon as i cross the bridge, his guard jut disappeared, i figured they teleported back because i see green names at the tent again, so i heal myself, ready to charge in again; just as I was about to abandon the quest, i saw 3 unfamiliar faces, and what do you know? Tervosh was there subduing Hendel, and Proudmoore just stood there looking, and I got a notice my quest was completed.

If you happen to mess up the first time, just abandon the quest. Hendel will disappear. Just wait until he respawns and you will get the yellow ? over him to try again. I don't see any mobs closeby to pull in for the guards to tackle either.

but they guards atked hendel in the midle of the fight :)
but after i won the guards taked me so i ran a bit off
i ran back the the guards still atk me to this day ~_~
when i can, those nubs are toast ^^

for me even though hendel was subdued his boy kept attacking and killed me, when I went back I couldnt find proudmore, and after a little while more Hendel respawned but cant be talked to anymore

I was unaware of his guards as lvl 34 Paladin. When they attacked, I tried to run back to the tower. Only his guards followed me, so I could easily take them out. When I came back, Hendel was unattackable, so I abandoned quest and talked to him. Then he attacked me and was beaten to a bloody pulp.

Good rewards for this...

I did exactly the hunter technique described below and soloed as a level 32 hunter with no problems....plant the frost trap, attack with pet...run to tower and let them pummel the guards. all told got 6000xp with both parts of this quest!

I (lv31 Gnome, Mage) lost to Hendel too, after that I couldn't restart the quest, as described.
By pure chance I met Tervosh in the Sentry Point while somebody else took the quest.
We joined (I was so angry, I just wanted to kill that %$&§#$) and when we arrived at the Sentry Point, TADAA, Hendel had a ! over his head. Lucky Me!
We took the quest, took him up (then some stupid Lv60 Taure felt he had to mess with the guards, which got us in PVP >_< and slain) but after that, we both got our exp und money.

was very easy, he pulled 2 36's and he was 35 and i was 33 warrior, planned on draggin to north point tower, but i realized how fast i was killing him while just running away, and just took him on and it ended quickly!

Easy for a lvl 31 paladin, i used one potion, divine protection or whaterver it is called and blessing of protection. I still had my lay on hands move as well... Just concentrate on hendel, oh and use seal of command :D

Do not use a MOB to do this quest. I posted this in the next part of the quest line, but wanted to put it here as well. This quest has been changed. I solo'd this quest as a level 36 paladin. First I lured in a big spider. Bad idea. The quest *breaks*. The question mark above Heldel's head disappears. Instead, I had to log out and log back in again to reset the quest. THEN I could speak to Hendel and kill him. Do not focus on the guards! I focused all my killing on Hendel. Suddenly, Tarvosh and Jaina arrive and Hendel is put in a bubble where he regains all his health and you can no longer attack him. He disappears and Tarvosh gives you a quest to talk to Jaina (standing next to him across from the tent). Then you get the ring. I was *not* high enough at level 36 to take the next quest Tavrosh has, it was a grey question mark to me. I'll have to come back at 37 to pick it up.

Can't say my skill had much to do with completing this quest. I walked up to Hendel and took the quest. I knew from reading that he and his goons were going to beat me to shreds. In my frantic run away I ran into 2 sentries. They took him and one goon off my hands. I kept running. I didn't realize this until I out run the 3rd guy and was on my way back. Just as I arrived so did the calvery. Got massive points for running.....lol.

I have abandoned the quest and gone back to Comander Samual in Theramore at least 4 times, after abandoning the quest, re-taking it, logging in and out, and nothing works. I even helped three other people finish the quest, but the "?" never shows up for me at Hendel. Be aware this thing may just be friggin broken.

Sometihng no-one else has mentioned is that fighting Hendel and the guards flags you PvP.

This quest seems to be pretty picky, so I suggest reading all the replies before atempting to complete it. Hendel is nearby the 2nd guard tower from the main road from Thereamore. Follow the main road, because beasts are strong (I was lvl 31), and you'll see a tent right next to the road nearby the 2nd guard tower where Hendel is stationed. When you speak to him, and then accept the next quest, he will instantly start attack you along with his level 36 MOBS. I didn't think I could handle this, so I fled back to the tower, running backwards, so I could keep their attention until I got to the tower. Once I got there the MOBS fled, and only Hendel stayed, and the guards and I whooped his ass. Then that was it, he ran off and disappeard, and I was left wondering what to do next. I saw a yellow dot on my screen, but I ignored it, and went to see if hendel was back at his tent. He was not. So I returned to the tower, and the yellow dot was gone. So I didn't know what to do with this quest. So I returned to Theramore and to the top of the tower in the middle of town where lady Proudmoore is or wutever, and the archmage was back congradulating me on my quest. Speak to him, then speak to the lady and you are done.

Did this entire quest as a lvl 29 Priest. Finished by starting the final step twice. First only 1 guard followed me to the Tower. I assisted the guards in killing Hendel's bodyguard. Then abandoned quest, challenged him again, and pulled them both to the Tower. There was like 6+ guards on his last remaining bodyguard, and just me on Hendel. I spammed Mind Blast until he got low enough, then he returned to his camp. Upon heading back to his camp, I saw *gasp* all 3 of em! The Archmage, Lady Proudmoore and Pained (her Night Elf @#$%^ with the cool sword enchantment). Talked to Archmage, then talked to Lady Proudmoore. Got the ring, the 4300 xp, and the 1g 30s. Sold the ring (stamina and strength were sorta useless to me, especially when I had two better Blue rings) for 46s and change. Not a bad quest!

Lvl 33 rogue with engineering.

Wasn't difficult. Set a target dummy (engineering skill) which occupied Hendel's henchmen for about 5 seconds (counts for a lot more than you might think). Then focused on Hendel. When he was down to about 30% or so, Tervosh, Lady Proudmoore, and another guard appeared and finished the battle for me.

Can't even begin to figure out how much experience this chain netted me, but it was definitely worth it.

I suggest everyone make a stop at the Cathedral of Light in SW and pick up this chain.

All was well until I engaged Hendel. Massive game lag, I died, now the quest doesn't show up in my log. I've talked to the Archmage in the tower he tells me no to waste time, I need to get Hendel before he gets away. Hendel is in the camp but nothing when I click him. Sigh.......

I didn't come to read about the quest prior to doing it, so I figured I'd handle it the same way I always do as a rogue. Kill 1 or 2 pats and vanish. I kill one and vanish, prepared to let my health regen. While I am doing this, Hendel remains red. I am sitting there waiting when he suddenly turns green.

When my health is full, I walked on back and could not attack him. I decide to forget it for now and run off only to find it tell me that the Mission Failed. Now, Hendel isn';t even there.

I suppose I should head back to the mage and see what he says.

Solo'd as a level 30 Paladin.

I did as some others suggested and pulled a beast in for Hendrel's guards to attack before I spoke to him. It was great, I was fighting Hendrel alone, then when the guards finished with the beast, they began to attack Hendrel. Perfect!

Except, once he was subdued the guards turned red and began to attack me. So I pulled them to the tower and let the other guards finish them off.

A surprisingly easy method--I never even had to heal or use my protection "bubble".

Hendel can be found next to a tent, standing on a small dock located just outside and to the north of the second tower from Theremore, in Witch Hill. Speak with him to complete the quest, then be prepared, because as soon as you accept the next quest, he will attack and one of his boys nearby will jump in as well. Just focus on Hendel and everything should be ok. At roughly 30-40% health remaining, Lady Proudmoore will show up and the fight will end.

i think it's still bugged - i couldn't interact with hendel and the quest never appeared in my log after kervosh vanished.

but I followed the clues blizzard left for me - "if you run into trouble i can always be found in lady proudmoore's tower..."

so if you can't get hendel, go back to town, go to the center tower, and you can re-acquire the quest form kervosh. he's at the top.

After reading the various posts here I thought I'd give it a try. First time, I was beaten to a bear-furred pulp in fairly short order, as I got stuck on the dock.

Second time, I went back from the other side (so the road was to my back). I hailed Hendel, cast Rejuvenation on myself, and then accepted the quest. When he and his goons attacked, I high-tailed it for the road (thinking I'd pull him to the tower and try and pick the guards off like others have done). I got as far as the bridge, when to my surprise, the guards ran back off to the camp, but Hendel stayed! I switched to bear form, and started to beat him up. If I was getting low on health, I switched back to normal form, rooted him, backed off, healed, then went back in again.

At about 1/3 of his hp, he did the normal thing and ran off back to camp. I followed at a slight distance (wary of the guards) and arrived just as Proudmoore and Tervosh and Pained popped in. Got 2150 exp from Tervosh, then 4300 from Proudmoore and the ring.

It's maybe worth a try to see if he'll stay on the bridge without his guards every time :)

annoyingly i'm not high enough level to take the next part of the quest though... o well..

really though the XP for one quest is amazingly good.

Ummm i tried to get the guards to attack him and they attacked hendels guards and hendel ran back to his camp and became unattackable....i waited for the guards to kill his guards and nothing happeneed.....i abandoned the quest and now i dont know how to get it back any help here?

Yeah.. Did this one at lvl 34.. Just wack Hendel and you get 700 + 2150 + 4300 exp in my case. 1g 30s and a ring...

What I did was make my pet stay in the middle of the 2 guards at the ramp. I went over and talked to him, started the fight, and once I got hit my pet came flying over, bringing 2 other guards. From there the guards held aggro and I did nothing :). Finished easily as a 30 hunter.

It's bugged for me. No matter how many times I abandon and reacquire this quest, Hendel is unable to be interacted with.

Just finished this as a level 35 Priest. Approach Private Hendel from the dock, as others recommend. Get yourself buffed as much as you like, have your healing pots ready, then cast PWS. Talk to Hendel to get him to attack. Cast damage spells until PWS wears off, then cast Psychic Scream. Heal as necessary, recast PWS and continue hammering away with damage spells. I hit Desperate Prayer just after the Scream and never was below half my health.

I did this quest as a lvl 31 Mage. As I was walking towards Hendel, I accidently aggroed one of those raptors. As I got to the camp, the guards started attacking the raptor. The question mark went away over Hendel's head for awhile, but it came back as the guards were still attacking the raptor. Well I started to fight him and I was at half life when the guards finished killing the raptor. I thought "Oh Sh*t!" but when the guards came back they started attacking Hendel. It was rather funny and I finished this quest by myself. Nice XP for a lvl 31.

Just a little additional solo-tip for hunters, I made sure to place a frost trap on the ground in front of the dock _before_ talking to Hendel and activating the quest. When the battle starts, the attacking guards will inevitably dive straight at the trap & be slowed down. That just meant that I could send pet at Hendel & run over to the tower-guards as described earlier, without the hostile guards managing to get close enough to stun me (which more or less screwed up the strategy on my first couple of attempts).

Well, it made me happy anyways, since the xp got me to lvl 30 :)

Now utterly and completely bugged on classic, as if someone fails the quest Jaina and the Archmage do not despawn, Logged here for Blizzard to maybe fix it. I am not however holding my breath, as Blizzard's customer support( what a joke those words are for World of Bugcraft), attention to details is imho woefully lacking, As far as I have been able to determine there is not even a bug reporting forum for classic.

If you see Jaina there move on do not waste your time. Do not even accept the part of the quest from Hendel, if they are there because if you then leave the area, the quest will fail, and have to be abandoned and re-acquired anyway at a later date.

IF YOU CANNOT ACTIVATE HENDEL...

If you can't "activate" Hendel, you may need to explore Sentry Point first (missed this and it drove me nuts). Go into the first "castle" along the road outside of Theramore at 59.70, 41.15 (or just look where this guy is located: Sentry Point Captain). The Missing Diplomat quest will then be flagged as complete. THEN speak with Archmage Tervosh in the same area and exchange the quests (you may need to wait a few seconds). Now Hendel will have the question mark and you can activate him.

As mentioned in comments in olden times, this quest WILL flag you for PVP when you attack, so if you're on a carebear server (like me), that could be something to consider when you go to complete it.Just FYI so you aren't surprised like I almost was.

Quick update as of today. Attacked Hendel and his two guards and tried to kite them to the tower. They made it about 80% of the way and then went into evade mode. I went back and found I could pull the two guards as a pair without Hendel. Killed them and went back to Hendel. He was green, so I abandoned the quest and immediately got the yellow "quest available" exclamation point but the guards did not respawn. Started whacking Hendel and he turned green at about 30%, at which point the rest of the quest played out as advertised.

So at the moment it seems to be working. If you can't get Hendel to 30% with the two guards hammering on you, might as well try this method.

Need to be careful with this one, playing on a PvE server as a Soul of Iron player. I wasn't expecting to be flagged for PVP and I hearthed immediately.

This quest do no longer flag you for PvP on Classic Hardcore servers.

I was able to compete this quest on 16/Sept/2023. The quest was bugged with Jaina and team standing near the private and after hurting him nothing happened, he just crouches over. The server then reset for maintenance shortly after. I logged on after reset and after dropping the incomplete quest and after talking to and hurting the private; Jaina and team showed up and I was able to complete. I think the bug is caused by Jaina and team showing up and then never leaving because they wernt there after server reset. Hope this helps.

Also; this quest no longer flags you for PVP on hardcore servers.

The Missing Diplomat

Find Private Hendel in Dustwallow Marsh.

Descrizione

Private Hendel is to the west of here. He's currently on guard duty protecting some of Theramore's infiltrators while they rest. They've been keeping tabs on the Horde base, Brackenwall, and looking for anything else that might threaten our borders.

You should have no problem finding him; just look for the tents along the road.

I have another matter to attend to, but I shall catch up to you soon enough. You can always find me in the Lady Proudmoore's tower if you have any problems.
