Defeated him today,twice. got the Question Mark, but he won't reply. For some reason he reset, but stiil would not talk, after i defeated him again. He's at 35,53

Found him at the same location, easy kill, he is level 38 non elite humanoid, and his guard wont help him!

I also found Reethe after finishing what appears to be the last part of The Deserters. He's unusable. Has anyone else had any joy with this?

The last piece of dialogue mentioned Reethe wanting to raid the ogre camp. Ogron (a special Ogre NPC) is in a foxhole across the stream, watching Reethe.

I killed Ogron. He wasnt lootable. perhaps the next step is something inside the camp Reethe wanted to raid, which makes Ogron lootable.

Actually the horde has a quest for him, not alliance. And yes it does include Orgen or whatever that orge you mentioned in last comment. Basiclly its the end for the the alliance side quest steps.

Pretty sure Blizz just never got around to completing this quest, as I know thats so for the horde version. But yes, the swamp does seem to have a lot of unfinished quests, but anyone whos been to Alcaz Island knows that Missing Diplomat isnt quite over yet...

Before You start to go to The Shady Inn first time to pick up the three items, make Theramore Inn Your home. Saves a lot of running.

After doing The Black Shield, I picked up the badge and looked at the hoofprints, in that order. I only went to the inn twice.

You cant seem to talk to this joker after you beat him even though he has the yellow question mark and a chat bubble on cursor.

Quest is still down. New patch was just released. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Yeah.. so, all the guys around him are 'green' just him as red.. then you get him to about 20% and he 'surrenders' up pops a ? over his head.. and it's just a dead link..

My suggestion.. Drop the quest, and don't waste your time.

Blizzard came up with an ending alright... Captain Vimes tells you he will send some men to deal with both the deserters and Reethe. And that's it for all the running.

You can't do anything with Reethe. In a horde quest you help the ogre nearby to kill Reethe.

There may not be many quests in Dustwallow Marsh, and they might not end properly, but they sure get you lots of easy XP quickly!

In just 30minutes I got 18125 XP at lvl 30 (that's 38% of the level)

I did these quests:
- The Missing Diplomat (all the way to the end, only one fight, and you can let some NPC guards help fighting)
- Soothing Spices (take 3 soothing spices along for this quest beside the road)
- The Orc Report (from a grave beside soothing spices quest)
- the 3 quest from The Shady Inn and all their followups (The Black Shield, Suspicious Hoofprints, Lieutenant Paval Reethe (didn't do the last part))

You can do all this by running into the swamp to the shady inn and then back to theramore in just one run, no fighting involved.

Jacken is level 38, but none of the other deserters join him in the fight, so if you can heal yourself it is an easy, if not long, battle to subdue him. I just did this at lvl 33 without breaking a sweat as a paladin.

In the end of quest message from Captain Vimes he says he's going to send out Lieutenant Caldwell to find and deal with Reethe. Lieutenant Caldwell is shown as being right around where Reethe is in the Dustwallow Marsh (43,38) Maybe if you talk to Lt Caldwell the quest continues? I searched for him for a while, but couldn't find him maybe others will have better luck?

I have ticketed GMs on and off for the last 3 months and they just tell me over and over again that the quest is bugged and they are "working on it". Don't hold your breath, even if you do have an elixir of greater breath holding

I can confirm the problems with balos jacken are fixed with patch 1.11. I just now was able to talk to him (after fighting him!) and get the last part of the quest.

theres 3 items at the inn for hordies: the blackend shield. reeths badge and the hoofprint.

after handing in reeths badge you get an escort quest to help an ogre go talk to him the little supply stealing bastard.

however before you cna get anything out of him some alliance show up and kill him for treason. (think conversating with ogres was the final straw or something)

after all three of them has been completed horde gets a quest to go talk to the smith of the black shield in thunderbluff.

unfortunatly the smith cant possibly remeber for whom he made the shield so the quest ends there.

btw the hoof prints looks more like raptor/dragonkin prints to me then centaur prints.

but alas the former ogre village now infested with dragonkins reveals nothing. and neither does the raptor grounds =(

People cant understand that for the alliance it ends here there is a longer one for the horde i believe.

Quests stop here. The horde face a similar situation with the black shield, it just ends with nothing.

This quest actually starts in Dustwallow Marsh on Theramore Island.

Dustwallow as a whole has a sort of unfinished feeling to it I think. First the Missing Diplomat ends without you actually finding the diplomat, and now this. The whole zone leaves you feeling unsatisfied.

What about the hoofprints.... after talking to the captain, he sends a scout to track centaurs... what does he find? maybe that can lead to an ending for this quest.

On the way back from picking up the badge at the burnt-down inn, I took a detour to get some herbs. There was Mr. Reethe himself, with a little tent set up and everything. I was sure that I would be coming back to him soon but never did. Don't know exactly why he's there. The coordinates of his location are: 42:37. Basically, just past the horde ogre as you head back to Theramore on the right side of the path.

Do you think that it can be end? look at last lines of Description! "Now, I helped you out... So, why don't you help us out and forget you bumped into us?" It can't be end! You must propably help him in something.... But in what and how? I don't know, I have only finished James Hyal yet, but I'll try to find out what to do.

There is no follow-up to this quest, though you do get a bit more from the Horde's perspective if you come back and do their side of the chain. The conclusion to the mystery was not added into the game until Patch 2.3, thus we won't be seeing it in Classic. That patch addressed many of the abrupt endings to quest chains in Dustwallow Marsh mentioned in other comments here.

Full Reethe Questline Info

It's a long story following Rethe's mystery on both alliance and horde side. I will tell the alliance side of things. I can also confirm it works in classic, you just need to get the required prequests. Questie will show the badge on the map, even if you didn't complete the prequests yet.

Alliance starts with James Hyal and the followup James Hyal OR They Call Him Smiling Jim (you can do only one of the prerequisites)

Once you got these prerequisites you will be able to loot the Blackened Iron Shield and Reethe's Badge as well as inspect Hoofprints in the burned down Inn in Dustwallow Marsh at 29 47.

The badge is really small sitting on a plank in the middle of the inn, the shield hangs on the chimney, the hoofprints are in front of the house.

These items start 3 quest:

The Black Shield
Suspicious Hoofprints

You are then send around 2 more times to other NPCs with the shield:

And the badge continues to the following questline:

I would bet that STV is the way it is with 100+ "kill x" quests because the other zones in those levels are so incomplete so they just wanted to pack enough quests to level into STV and call it a day. From the alliance side once you leave Duskwood and to a lesser extent Ashenville it seems like a different game. You go from interesting quest lines fighting mobs that seem like the enemies of civilization too...mindlessly slaughtering countless wildlife to really no end. Sure there are exceptions, but they seem unconnected to anything. I would love to see them update classic with new content and finish the zones that are clearly incomplete. Maybe give people the option to start in different spots.

We threw him out of camp because he insisted on raiding the supplies of the ogres up at Brackenwall Village. We're not so many in number that we could stand up to those mindless brutes.

He crossed the line one too many times, so we left him to fend for himself.
