This quest is a bit unusual because you can pick it up in the middle without doing step 1. You get some tantalizing clues in Theramore about the 'burned down Inn' but after finding the Inn I couldnt find any clues or quests to continue the investigation.

I am suspecting that this story might be broken. Anyone finish this story in beta. It seems that there should be something at the burned Inn but it seems that there isnt anything to find anymore.

is reached by taking the boat from menethil harbor. Pretty easy.

Got the sheild off the fireplace and searched the hoof prints in front of the burned down building for two new quests.

For those that can't find Vimes, he's behind the table in the back in the same room as the Clerk.

There are 3 hints at the inn a badge, hoof print and, shield get all three before leavign.

this comment might be more newer than these following comments but you are saying if you do the James Hyjal quest than its like the same as doing Guard Byron except different locations leading to the same quest by Vimes giving you the clues?

The Shady Inn location is at 29,48

3 Quests to pick up here

1) Shield on top of fireplace
2) Plank in middle of inn
3) Hoofprint in front of inn

You can skip talking to the captain before this quest..I couldnt find him :)

For those who have trouble trying to find the badge its on the planks that are in the Inn.

I had trouble finding them (believe it or not) howveer there are three planks inside. two are crossed and the other one isn't. THe one that isn't is the one with the badge on it.

After I talked to Clerk Lendry, I got no further with this quest.... Do I just find the footprints now?

After talking with the clerk, go to shady Rest inn. It's on thr western edge of the barrens, DuswallowMarsh 29,47.

The muddy footprints are on the grass just outside the front of the inn.
The black sheild is hanging above the fireplace.

Both will give you quests to go back to Theramore.

Talk with Captain Garran Vimes right behind Clerk Lendry. He does not give you a quest, but tells you to go to the inn.

You will find a black shield there. Perhaps you can find the footprints at the same time, didn't know about them when I was there.

Clerk Lendry can be found on the top floor in the Foothold Citadel.

Full Reethe Questline Info

It's a long story following Rethe's mystery on both alliance and horde side. I will tell the alliance side of things. I can also confirm it works in classic, you just need to get the required prequests. Questie will show the badge on the map, even if you didn't complete the prequests yet.

Alliance starts with James Hyal and the followup James Hyal OR They Call Him Smiling Jim (you can do only one of the prerequisites)

Once you got these prerequisites you will be able to loot the Blackened Iron Shield and Reethe's Badge as well as inspect Hoofprints in the burned down Inn in Dustwallow Marsh at 29 47.

The badge is really small sitting on a plank in the middle of the inn, the shield hangs on the chimney, the hoofprints are in front of the house.

These items start 3 quest:

The Black Shield
Suspicious Hoofprints

You are then send around 2 more times to other NPCs with the shield:

The Black Shield

And the badge continues to the following questline:

Lieutenant Paval Reethe
Daelin's Men
The Deserters
The Deserters

There is no follow-up to this quest, though you do get a bit more from the Horde's perspective if you come back and do their side of the chain. The conclusion to the mystery was not added into the game until Patch 2.3, thus we won't be seeing it in Classic. That patch addressed many of the abrupt endings to quest chains in Dustwallow Marsh.

Questioning Reethe

After handing in Reethe's Badge you get an escort quest to help an ogre go talk to him.
However before you can get anything out of him some alliance show up and kill him for treason.
After all three of them has been completed horde gets a quest to go talk to the smith of the Blackened Iron Shield in Thunderbluff.
Unfortunatly the smith cant possibly remember for whom he made the Blackened Iron Shield so the quest ends there.

I'm fairly certain you can interact with the shield and footprint at Shady Rest without this quest. If you do, this quest is no longer available to pick-up. I have progressed too far and can no longer confirm.

My brother James went with Lady Proudmoore across the sea. Last I heard, the fighting had settled down over there, and James was setting up an inn somewhere on the continent. Wherever he is, I'm sure he's doing good business. Damn fine cook he was.

I haven't heard from him for a while now--too busy with his inn, I'd wager--but the clerk in Theramore could probably point you to him.
