I picked up this quest at level 60. I noticed the quest item would not drop when killing any level 57 or lower Chillwind. However, the drop rate seemed higher than 50% if you start to kill any Chillwind that is level 58 or higher. I hope this helps for any high level player going back to do this quest.

I am a 56 Priest. I killed lvl 53-56 Fleding Chillwinds around Frostfire Hotsprings.

Loc: 38,37 to 45,37. Only took about 45 minutes to complete the quest. Check the northern part around these areas near the mountains, there are plenty of Fleding Chillwings.

At the coordinates of 60, 25 are 4 level 58-59 Chillwind Ravagers which could be of help if you can take on a level 58. Also if you head north from there you'll find a large amount at the coordinates of 59,18. Although those ones are mainly all 59.

Take out Chillwind Ravager only.
They have almost 80% drop rate.

I've done this quest three times with different classes and this time it went the fastest.

The highest levels have the highest drop rate.

melee damage small, just interrupts casting poison.
for rogue easy, use Mind-numbing Poison, cheap shot, kick and gouge. :)

I've killed about 10-15 of them and no horns.

K seriously killed about 30-40 and NO drops and hardly any drops not even including the quest time! I think it's pointless.

I got a very low drop rate from the Fledging Chimeras between the hot springs and Everlook. But then I discovered about a dozen of them near the Alli flight path, and got about a 50% drop there.

Chimeras plentiful around coords 58, 18. I had to kill 17 to get the 8.

The fledglings dropped the uncracked horns about 1/3 the time while I worked this quest. Theyre' level 51-53. Took about 30 minutes. Makes sense that the young ones would have uncracked horns I suppose.

You can find them all allong the road into Winterspring from Felwood. I found the highest concentration in teh Frostfire Hotsprings valley area. Watch for bears, yetis and owlbeasts as adds.

Well people I think it's what level your at cause I was lv 53 and am now lv 55 just completed this quest. Most of the drops I got was as soon as I hit level 55. Let us not forget the super sticky tar quest. I had the same problem there too. So Blizz does this on purpose to make you level up.
Don't complain just grab a beer or three and drink grind :D

Go to coords 65,30. I got all 8 drops by killing only 16 mobs. There are loads of Chimera in this area but the spawn rate is horrible. Don't forget to look up on the hillside around 66,26 because there is another group of them up there. Took me no more than 15 minutes once I found the spot.

There are a lot of the Chillwind Chamaera's (the one's it says to kill in the quest log) around 60,40... for me, it was a good drop rate.

Among the three breeds of Chimaera found in the area, Fledgling Chillwind (Lv 53-55) appears to have the best drop rate.

Both the drop statistics available on this site and elsewhere, as well as my personal experience (I've hunted all three breeds) seem to back this.

One possible explanation might be that the quest giver is looking for an "uncracked" horn, and the horns get cracked as the beast matures.

Fledgling Chillwinds can be found in the west side of the zone, towards the border to Felwood and Moonglade.

Fledglings have another merit of being the easiest among the three to kill (Chillwind Ravagers are Lv 57-59, Chillwind Chimaeras are Lv 55-57). Notice also that the quest level for this quest (Lv 54) clearly implies Fledglings as main targets.

The drop rate was actually set based on how densely populated the chimeras are. Fledglings have a high drop but they are far apart. You can pull 4 or 5 ravagers from one spot though at a lower drop rate.

Takes about the same amount of time regardless of which you hunt.

from time to time i see quest like this. the drop rate is Dependant on how you kill them. (theory) Don't use heavy hitting spells to kill and the Drop rate is better.

Another good spot I found is directly south of Everlook, around Mazthoril.

Chimeras around 58-59 are found at 60,19.

I killed around 12 of these to complete.

I did this quest as a lvl 57 rogue with no problems.

Prepare yourselves for a long hunt; the chimeras are not the most usual sight in there. Plus the fact that maybe one out of three drops a horn.

WoW Classic: You cannot access this quest until you've been to Tinkee Steamboil in Burning Steppes. She gives you a quest that introduces you to Felnok Steelspring in Everlook who will then give you this quest.

As for the quest itself, the higher the level Chimeras you kill, the better chance of these dropping. The fledgelings are a waste of time. I would advise the Ravagers north of Everlook. They are levels 57-59 but definitely give a better drop rate than any of the others.

The quest is brutal. Absolute anguish. This is the worst quest I have ever done in an active 15 years of world of warcraft.
It's a required quest to unlock the ability to kill Vexus in Scholomance, for the BIS Shadowpriest/warlock neck drop, to answer your question as to why I would put myself through this.

You MUST kill chimeras that are within your level bracket.
The horns WILL NOT drop if you kill chimera outside your level bracket.
As a 60, DO NOT spend ANY time killing anything below 58. I have confirmed over a 2 hour period of self torture, it is a 0% drop chance if they are below 2 levels then your player character.

If they stop dropping, log completely out of the game for at least 5 minutes, or leave the zone and come back.

- It took 2 hours, and 134 chimera kills total. I started in the south with the 59-60's. The respawn time is low, about 30 minutes to 1 hour. This forces you to find more of them. Do NOT read the decade old wowhead posts saying to go north. I did this. I trusted all of you. I lost a piece of myself and my sanity doing this.
I killed 70+ low level 52 chimeras and not a SINGLE horn dropped.

As soon as i went back south and the 59-60s respawned, and I logged out and logged back in, all 3 remaining dropped and i was able to continue my life.

HEED WITH WARNING.
Only kill the ones within 2 levels of your player character. It is either bugged or designed to only drop from the ones near your player character level.

This quest is the worst video game experience I've ever had, and actually had me considering fully quitting and uninstalling. I am enraged.

I got a little scared reading the comments here about horrid drop-rate, but one run from Everlook to the Timbermaw tunnel killing all the chimeras I saw, nettet me the eight horns. Level 57 warrior. Next!

Be warned -- It can be a grind. The drop rate is terrible. I've killed all of the correct types of chimeras, I'm at 34 with 3 drops. 1 within the first 3, and then at around 20 had 2 in a row drop. None since

I was a bit worried about this quest after reading a lot of the posts. I'm just a lvl 52 Feral Druid, so how was I going to kill lvl 57+ mobs to get the horns?
(I even killed a number of lvl 55-56 chimeras south of Everlook...no drops.)

Ans.: You don't. Where you want to focus is a rectangle area between Timbermaw Hold to the split in the Road. Most of the horns dropped North of the main road. A couple dropped south of the road. All are Lvl 53-55 Fledgling Chillwinds. North of the road, focus on the hillside. Drop rate was maybe 40%-50%.

Hope this helps the lower levels.

I have most of what Tinkee needs, but I'm missing one important component, and that's chillwind horns. The horns of the chillwind chimaera in Winterspring are a concentrated source of cold, but only pristine, uncracked horns will do! I'll need a supply of those to complete Tinkee's order.

Bring me the uncracked chillwind horns, and I'll prepare a package for Tinkee.
