The book you're searching for, is in the middle, and huge building near Araj.
A lot of "Musty Tomes" is scattered on the floor. The book for the quest has a 20% drop chance, so just keep opening them until it "drops"

There's two groups with 4 peeps guarding the building, so to get inside you'll have to suicide if you're below lvl 59/60 probably.

When you use a book, upon completing the "spell" one or two level 55 undead will spawn (they give you an annoying debuff as melee).

Starts the quest Brother Carlin.

Done as 58 Warrior.

The trick with this quest is to carefully examine the books on the floor. "Trapped" tomes that spawn guards have a clear white/gray split on their pages, whereas the real thing has a smooth transition from white to gray. This may only become apparent if you zoom in and highlight a book, but it's worth it to avoid unneccessary fights.

Also, if you're doing this as a 'lock, use Life Tap and Hellfire to suicide in and out, as you won't lose durability and won't have to fight to undead out front.

At 56 I was able to sneak in and out without aggroing the 4 guard parties (as a pally). Also, the tip about the books above is very neat - thanks for sharing!

This is very easy to sneak in if you are 56 or higher. Sneak around the building from the west and south and hug the building close and you will not aggro the 4 man mobs. However I have clicked on 10 booksand still do not have it. The book also spawn 2 55-56 mobs.

I noticed that no one has said where the town hall actually is for this quest. It is the large building in the center of Andorhal, cords are aprox. 43,69. Also, there may be one mob or two, it seemed to swing on the flip of a coin.

Okay the REAL trick is this, the debuff called Musty tome trap expirees in about a minute. When it does the ghouls die with it automatically. You just need to stay alive for 30 seconds and you can loot all the books you want. Handy for my 52 druid that solod this quest.

Like the dude posted above with the picture, i went in there lvl 52 looked at all the books first person view saw the book that was all Grey on pages opened it and bam! it was that easy! thanks for the good tip man!

When my wife and I did this quest, we weren't aware of the shading difference between the "real" and the fake books, but we did notice the "real" one spawned in the same place, along the back wall behind a barrel. only opened 2 of the fake ones, found the real one by accident, then waited for it to respwan without opening any others. Not sure if it was a fluke or not, but might be worth a shot to check that location first to possibly avoid any debuffs/annoying battles (that give no xp as well)

Not sure if this has been mentioned before and sorry if it has, but if you stand behind the books when you open them, more often than not (for me at any rate), the trap is not activated. You just see a strange blue eve that shoots beams(??) in a direction and goes back in.
NOTE: This does not work 100% of the time

Location: 43,69
There is a group of 5 mobs outside spell caster and melee which are hard to go through.
* Bring a Friend to help

The Spawned Critter has a 2 minutes debuff which stacks.
Reducing Strength and Stamina by 100 (stack x 5)
And 47 sec debuff to movement imparing by 60% and Attack speed by 28%
It becomes harder to fight them.

I can 100% confirm that the real book definitely looks different from all of the other books, I just did the quest yesterday and posted about this here on the book's page a few minutes after.

First and foremost, the fake books are indeed all bottom half white pages and top half gray pages.

Secondly, the fake book pages look to be a lower texture resolution. They don't look like actual pages if that makes any sense. The real book's pages will look like pages are supposed to look. When you see it, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

And be sure to hover your mouse over the books to light them up some, the room is rather dark. :)

I did this quest at 54. The mobs inside are not to bad. but then again I am a shaman Lol! The debuff can stack on you up to 5 times totaling for a loss of 100 stam and 100 str.

If you do this at a low level like I did watch those debuffs it will make or break you.

Make sure you have free bag space. If you dont physically loot the ruined tomes it will stay on the floor and not make way for what could be the book you are there to retrieve. Also has a chance to respawn the mobs and you will have to fight them twice for something you already cleared and waste your time.

Just did it awhile ago and the correct book surely looks different. As the above poster mentioned the correct book might not be there, so you have to open the wrong ones to get the correct one to spawn. Tested on 10th May 07

Building located at 43,68. Inside there is a bunch of musty tomes second one i clicked on turned out to be the quest item. Do not know if it is random or not but i found it in the very book in the very top right hand end of the room. Hope this helps :)

must have opend like 50 books before i got the right one. And i did know of the color diff. Got help from a 60 warrior in the end, thx craz ;) The q is kinda &*!@ed imo.

I got it on first try using the color difference, like he said, you gotta move your cursor over it to really notice the difference. It helped me out loads, and I got in really easy by just sneaking around the right side, nobody saw me going in or coming out. Easy quest. And you might have to enhance you graphics setting to notice the difference.

Just did it - though I inspected every book first and they were all top grey, bottom white. Figured they'd fixed it and started clearing clockwise from the entrance. Cleared them all without any luck. Of course more than half of them had re-spawned by the time I got done with the last one, so I inspected the re-spawns and sure enough, one was a blended grey. Popped it and out came the Annals.

So the color trick still works - but it appears there's no guarantee that at any given time that the book will be there. Might have to open a few duds to get the good book to spawn or come back later after some other sap has gone through a mess of them and given up not realizing that one of his respawns was the good one.

on my first attempt to get into the building, i aggroed a mob in front of the fountain, died mercilessly...then on my second try, i rushed in, didnt aggro....then i remembered how the real book looked once i moused over it...and it worked!..first try and got the right book...ty!

Finally got the book when I tried this method.

1)Turn up the Gamma in the video options screen

2) Look at the spines of each book. The correct book has a faint, but noticeable 'X' on the spine.

Select that one and you'll get the tomb. Worked first time for me after spending hours looking!

I have just finished opening every single tome in the room and not one is the right one.

Does it, or does it not, respawn?

As I understand the quest, there's only the one room and a finite number of tomes. It did allow me to pick one up, the wrong one.

The gamma trick only works if the book is there.

Thanks so much to whoever sent that coloring trick in. Did the quest at level 53 and got the book the first try. The difference is actually pretty easy to see if you know what to look for - if the top of the pages are gray and the bottom is white, it's not the right one, if the pages are a uniform grayish white color, that's it!

There are no enemies in the actual town hall building so I used the Run and Rez cheap method. /shame

Thanks again, and by the way the coords for me were 43,69, on the floor right by the steps.

Took quite a while for the right one to spawn, few things you should know.

1: Wrong ones can spawn 0,1, or 2 guys to kill you. Generally 55.

2: You get instantly debuffed with -25% speed and 33% more time between attacks

3: One type of guy gives you a debuff that stacks up to 5 times. Debilitating Disease or something. Each stack is -20 stamina and -20 strength, and it lasts 2 minutes. Each time it stacks again the 2 minutes is reset. So plan on doing this with -1000 health and -100 Strength. I'm a 55 rogue and it was annoying, but I never died.

I just want to be sure good info gets out there! I did this quest today, and I definetly saw the 'X' and the pages were def more uniform in color. I took screenies, see below. It didn't spawn tho for awhile, I had started just opening all the books thinking maybe the X thing was not good info, as some people have said. I don't know what book they were looking for, it was absolutely on the Annals of Darrowshire for me, lol. And it was very obvious, especially after looking at all those books for awhile.

And here it is from a distance, def different than the other books. You may not be able to tell as well from these pics, its very obvious in the City Hall. I didn't have to adjust my settings at all, but they may be fairly high already. I did this as a 60 NE Druid, and it wasn't too bad.

Those pics rocked !
The building for those who don't use coordinates.
It's the only standing building at the intersection toward the middle of the ruins. The intersection that has the named elite mob "Araj", you can get inside without aggroing any by jumping up the side of the stairs.
Run around in first person view til you see a book with a faded "X" on the binding. All the others don't have an "X". Totally simple.

I just finished this quest on June 12, 2005 on the blood hoof surver.

I got the correct book on the 5th try, and so did the other player in my party. Once he got his book, which was on the bench-like area against the wall, the book disappered. I grabbed several others which spawned the mobs, then another book spawned right by where the other correct book was found. This was the correct book for me as well.

Went through at least 12 books so far waiting on the right one to spawn... Still doing the same quest... These things are tough at 53 especially when you get 2 at a time and the fact that you get ZERO exp from killing them makes this quest even more lame :( I hope the right book spawns soon :-/

es - fixed last patch: note- there are a whole bunch of books to open. opening one giving a musty tome instead of the annals also spawns 1-2 ghosts to kill (no exp or lootability)

The guy that pointed out that the books with half light and half dark pages are all the Ruined Tomes and the one that is all the same shade is the quest book was Dead on. I picked up 7 Ruined tomes fighting those stupid guardians before I read his post. After reading it I zoomed to 1st person and looked at all the books until I found one all the same color and that was the right one.

On a side note, you can get a room with ALL ruined tomes, if you do you have to pick some up and wait for the respawn.

Woohoo... the tomes are littered across the floor of the building near the north central area... there are no npcs inside, so if you are a rogue you can slip past (taking care not to alert the elite level 61 Araj standing in the middle) ... only problem is when you open one of the tomes, a level 55 elite spawns to fight you (assuming you pick one of the fourth out of five tomes that is the wrong one) ... took me several tries and a few deaths to find it...

my copy came out of a tome on the slightly raised balcony... there were two tomes there at the time and the one i found was on the right hand side when facing the balcony from across the room... that one did not spawn a guardian, but then again i have no idea if its the same one every time either.

Found the book in the same place as the poster below me. It didnt spawn there the first time though. I got it on the second try.

This seems to be the book to open.

Be ready for either one or two ghouls if you get the wrong book. They cast a nasty plague on you and you also get a trap that reduces your movement speed.

If you need to do this quest, look very close, all the pages of the real book are white, the rest will be half black, half white. Find the one that is all whitish grey and that will be the book.

Looted 18 Musty Tomes before finally getting the Annals. And must've killed about 10 guardians. Said guardians despawn after a minute, come in 1 or 2 packs.

This quest is a load of #$%^&*. I spent the entire evening in that cramped room opening every tome that respawned, and subsequentally killing the guardians (gives neither exp nor loot). Finally after 2½ hours a good book spawned and boy was i pissed. You should stay away from this quest unless you want a nervous breakdown and your evening ruined.

First book I tried to open randomly I got jumped, then I tried to see if any of the books looked differently from the others. With your cursor over the books, they have the top half of the pages gray, and the other half white. The book that contained the annals had both sets of pages gray, I hope this can be of help to anyone.

Uncertain about previous posts, but the loc is right.
As of 31/08/06 the below is what I found.
After opening 4 books because they all looked alike, one respawned and when the cursor was held over it neither of the halves stayed grey, but lite up quite brightly. I didn't see an x on it either. When I looted it I got the annals.

Has anyone found this since the patch yesterday (19 April)? A group of friends and I killed the two elite undead guys in the city hall (at least, what looked like the city hall), but there were no books there!

The books are in the building directly north from Andorhal City Hall (wasted building with big keg (?) near it BUT after honor patch you won't be able to pick them up becouse they are floating in the air (no way to get them - too high)

I soloed this quest today, and I must have opened 5 books before I found the right one. The right book for me was on the left side of the room, on the far side of the floor.

If you open the wrong book, a worm or eye pops out of the book, and spwans two ghost ghouls that don't drop anything. So if you need to wear an extra protection trinket, do it, you will not get any scourge stones.

They are both lvl 55, and attack with melee while keeping two curses on you. One lowers your stats, the other lowers your attack speed. Keep some food/health potions on you for after the fight.

In my opinion, the items at the end of this quest chain aren't worth it for a lvl 60 Rogue, so I dropped it after I finally finished this part.

it's the 3rd time i complete this quest, first with lock, then druid then rogue.

The first time i did not know and opened all books till i found the one...
The second time, after reading the posts here I DID find a little X on one book.
The third time (tonite), i did not find the X but one of the book had a slightly washed out color compared to the others, and it was the one!

So... I think THERE IS something different, it's simply a matter of spending the time to look and keeping the eyes wide open.

Right, you may have to go through a fair few tomes but the book will look like this once it has spawned: It will have a brown stain like accross the pages and an X on the spine of the book.

The X is easier to see if you hover the cursor over the book.

As of May 18, 2005 there was no books in the town hall. There was two Elite Skeletal Warlords in there. I reported it as bugged.

I was in City hall, opened all books (also killed all spawned mobs) and in last book (first book from doors to left) there was needed book.

My level 54 priestess had no choice but to suffer a painful death on the way in. The mobs are about that level and VERY plentiful, probably 6 followed me into the inn and killed me in seconds. There was a level 61 Elite that didn't follow as I'd feared but there was a total group of at least 25 hovering near the entrance. I'd recommend either removing or repairing your armor if you can't stealth as even a 60 would die in that mob. Correct book was easy to find, the others all had solid black at the top quarter of the pages.

I had to have looked at every book at least 5 times before I finally just gave up with the pictures and opened a couple. After about a minute long fight each time I realized I really didn't want to do that 20 times, so I moved all my graphics settings up to their max and restarted (so they take effect). As soon as I logged back in it was crystal clear which book it was.

So in other words if you can't tell which book it is, turn your graphics settings up.

I thought for sure id have to fight them (66 rogue) but i tried something, shift+click the book to auto loot and just as you get the book stealth, then back away from the mob, if it hasnt been attakced when your curse runs out it dies, and you dont have to fight. Rogues only though unfortunately

Got to the coordinates listed below (43,69) by using lesser invisibility to get passed the dudes outside. Went to the podium, opened the first book I saw (I honestly didn't even see any other tomes, until after I opened it) and it was the right one. Seemed almost TOOO easy.

If you look at all the books in the room, they are dark blue on the bottom and light blue on the top.

The real one is light blue on the bottom and the top.

You can avoid corpse running as long as you inspect them carefully.

Annals of Darrowshire was the 12th "Musty Tome" I opened. The spawned mob(s) on the "Ruined Tome" live for only 60 seconds and, as undead, are Shackle-able...

I went in there to find only 10 tomes lying around, counted. I opened the one near the stairs and a level 56 ghoul appeared, killed him, no luck.

Most of the posts in this extensive thread are correct in stating there are brown streaks running the length of the pages and a small dark blue X on the spine, but they are incorrect in stating that its always there. The respawn on those books is random, so you might have to loot quite a few before a book meeting the 'top and bottom halves same color' criteria. In fact, the book you are looking for has slightly higher resolution in its texturing... Looked a little different to me at least. After looking and looting many and knowing what worthless ones look like before looted, you will immediately recognize this one as different. Just takes time. 45 minutes before I got a spawn.

OK, glad they finally fixed this quest. When you go into the town hall building you want to go up the stairs on the left of where the podium is. Right as you climb up the two or so stairs there should be a book in front of you. Don't know if it's reliable or not, but this was the one that dropped it for two of us back to back...

Ok I went in there not really knowing what everyone was talking about, not being able to find the right book. I looked at them from the side like it said, they all looked the same. Even after playing with my gamma. Well I opened the one on the far left ledge when you walk in. The ghouls jumped out. I opened two more and the same thing happened. Then I just happened to run by the one on the ledge again and it looked different, so I opened it. It was the right book. It was really weird. But whatever I got my book finally. Only one death.

Advice: Get naked and charge into the building. Res/loot/repeat as necessary until you get the copy. As far as I can tell it's a random 1in5 or so to get the valid copy. I looted a book I had already tried on a previous attempt and got it.

i was trying to find it earlier today too... but couldnt find it. I was in the "city hall" thing for about 20 min and they didnt spawn. i heard from someone that they drop off a mob now.... i dunno what or where. not too sure if this is true or not.

Look for one with a tiny fiat "X" on the binding. Tough to spot, and not too clear, but it is there

You can see an "X" on the spine in slightly darker blue. Most of the "fake" books have a "v".

This quest is easy for lvl 55. The pictures below of the books are accurate, I got mine on the first try. I took the left bridge into town, and only had to kill a few MOBS before I got to the building (Coord. below. You don't have to kill any of the MOBS around the fountain. If you stick to the building as close as you can you can get in without aggro'ing them.

This quest is the biggest load of garbarge ever. I saw some guy post below,
"i had to open 6 (SIX) fake tombs on purpose to make the actual real tomb to spawn... booooooring! :P"

Well boohoo that you had to open 6 cause I so far have spent 3 hours (1 hour on seperate days) trying to get this damn quest finished, and every time I go I open probably around 10 "real" tomes, and no annals of darrowshire. There have even been times where I have cleared out a full room of tomes, then waited for respawns, and not had even ONE SINGLE "real" tome spawn.

If you want my advice on how to do this quest, I suggest this method. If you farm epl or wpl lots this works well, I do lots of epl/wpl farming and such and whenever I run by Andorhal, I check the building for any "real" tomes, open them, then leave and come back later. Thats just my opinion though, perhaps I just have the worst luck ever. At least with this method tho you are wasting a minimal amount of time on this craptacular quest.

I can confirm the books are there and on the ground (july 17th) They can be found inside the main hall of the Darrowshire Town Hall. When you open the wrong tome 1 of 3 things happens.

1. You get attacked by TWO lvl 52 ghouls with debuffs and slowdown from the book.
2. Same but its just one ghoul.
3. No attack at all (empty book)

I had FIFTEEEN wrong books before I got the annals.

Soloed as a 54 Warlock. The book's pages are not seperated to grey and white sectors... but all one color. I snuck around the west side and was able to get in without pulling aggro on me. My void pulled aggro... but after they killed him they left and I was alone in the room. You should be able to get in without aggro

I can't seem to find the place to look for the book... the coords are not working for me (I have titan bar not cosmos) I would appreciate any help.

is where I found the book and both the top and bottom were dark shades compared to other books though I had to zoom in all the way to tell that

First try btw. Thanks everyone for the posts about the shades.

Yup, looked for a book with no shade difference, FP view and sat down and i could see an X on it. Opened it up, first try. 5 min tops only cuz I had to find the right building. 43, 70

I thought that the trouble in here was getting in, because there were at least 2 groups of 5 undead and if you aggro one, you aggro them all. So what i did was I looked around and saw some members of the scarlet crusade. I arranged a meeting of 5 undead and 4 scarlet crusade people, and presto! I don't have to fight them! All the scarlet crusade people died and left me with a 1/2 health undead, which I easily slaughtered. Anyway, the spawn on these is NOT from a certain book, it is actually random, and it takes awile to get it.

The correct book the pages are all white. When I first entered all the books were the same, I looted a couple and killed the spawns, then the one I needed appeared. The pages on the book were all white. All the other books are ruined and half black.

My book was inside on the right before the steps as well. Just to see if others worked I opened about 15 with no luck. Then went to that spot (after doing it the first 2 attempts) and it was right there.

Yes the books are at 43,70. It is tricky getting in. As I was solo, the only thing I could think of it to do a suicide mission. There are no mobs inside(thank god)

To keep you from making the same mistake I did:

43, 70 is the correct location, but you can be standing in the ruins of a smaller building and get the same coords. The building you're looking for is large and is the model used for town halls.

I did not see an "X" or any other distinguishing marks on the books, even after playing with the gamma. But it's very easy to find the right book, just look at it from the side; the upper and lower half of the pages will both be dark gray, rather than half white, half gray.

well i am trying it 7 now makeing sure i opened a differnt one each time .. I die each and every time because im a warrior.

Gotta love how they play favorites and make it so 3 classes can mroe or less solo this. I cant think of any quest that only a warrior can solo. but plenty that rouges/druids hunters and Paladins can.

Here's a good tip : if you open a wrong book, there's 1 or 2 guardians that will pop up.
Thing is, they will despawn after a set amount of time. So if you are a priest like me, you can shackle one and kill/survive the other.
Then just wait a while, refreshing the shackles a few times.
Save you mana and headaches.

The "Real Book" for me was mostly closed, and pages were not visible.

In addition to looking almost imperceptibly different than the fake books, it's also a random spawn. I was helping someone and we checked every book that had spawned, and none of them was the right book. We had to wait for another book to respawn, and then wait some more for the real one.

It is completely possible that at some point there is no "real" book spawned. By using the fake ones, eventually a real one spawns. It took me 12 fake ones to spawn a real one.

The trick with the color is still working in Classic.
However in my case the the whole room was just full with false book, so I needed to loot some of them until right book spawend.

Can confirm the color is different on the real book. Look at the pages on the side, if they are white it is the correct one, if they are half white, half black it is the fake one. I had to open 10 fake ones to make the real spawn.

what a dumb quest. Spend 10minutes opening 5 tomes and don't get xp for killing any of the mobs...better off just grinding mobs or doing dungeons. Most worthless quest ever. I just abandoned it.

This is a pretty frustrating quest if the book takes a while to spawn.

Basically, you're looking for a book with pages that are ALL the same shade of gray. You'll notice most (if not all) books in the room are black on top and white on bottom. Clicking these will spawn 1-2 lvl 56 ghouls.

If the book with evenly gray pages isn't there, you'll need to start clicking and looting the others (i.e., useless tome) to force them to respawn. I had to respawn at least 20 of them before I finally got the Annals of Darrowshire to drop.

Insanely annoying quest, fake books everywhere. The vanilla trick checking the color still works, but i looted what feels like 15+ books before a real one spawned. The mobs that spawn from the fake ones has normal HP numbers, and they usually spawn 2 and do not grant XP.

One of these books is not like the other. Get close and observe the books, the pages on the actual book are uniform lines and look the most like actual pages. Since there is only one real book at a time (there is a respawn timer), I'll say the book's pages look the most realistic. Not much polygon bending.

If you don't see the different one, you might have to click a few. I picked up about 12 books before the faded/different one spawned.

A little tip for rogues:

If a real book isn't spawning, keep your cursor on your stealth button as you start opening one of the fake books. As soon as the loot window opens, stealth and walk away from the spawns. When the musty tome trap debuff expires, the decrepit guardians despawn. Keep opening false books until a real one spawns.

No muss, no fuss.

As already said, the real book isn't two toned and it is obvious when you see it.

However it's important to note that despite posts here saying 'got it first time', it isn't always there ready and waiting.
I had to use four trapped books before this one spawned (no-one else doing the quest).

as of patch 1.13.7.38631, being able to tell between the fake and correct books seems to be impossible. I'm 99% sure they changed the models so where they look exactly the same. I was able to find the correct book on most of my characters, but I can't now. Also, I swore before these ghouls were elite, but they aren't ><.

I'm just doing this quest and ALL the books are fake, done it many times before and I know how to spot the real book by looking at it. Is it bugged currently?

There are a lot of comments noting how to tell the difference between the fake tomes and the real one. What isn't mentioned here is that the Decrepit Guardians which spawn will despawn after around a minute. If you are a tanky class, just hold out and try to kill one. But they will both disappear after some time.

The correct tome can take a very long time to spawn. I had to clear 20-30 fake ones, which took me well over half an hour—maybe closer to an hour. It doesn't feel worth it unless you really want to do the follow-up.
