Alright, this is how you do the quest:
First, swim to the small island north-east of the big waterfall (Hinterlands). There you'll find a picnic basket. If you're solo, prepare yourself for a tough fight - as soon as you open the basket, 3 level 49 trolls spawn around you and instantly attack you. You have to kill at least one of them, all three carry Lard's Lunch... So if you're quick with looting, killing only one of them will suffice.

Apparently they patched this quest so you cannot loot only one of them, they all musbe dead first. Took me about 4 deaths to realize this.

Bascially go to the island, open the basker, and kill one mob or three quick and go turn it iin.

Soloed as 50 Rogue. If you steath right after you open the basket they will still come after you. You have to Vanish and they scatter. Sap one (I have imp sap) and then you have to fight two at once. Hopefully you've killed them both before the sapped one comes after you.

My reward? Two mana pots, of the owl gun and of defense mail. I would have been happier if I had just gotten gold.

Looting the "Lard's Picnic Basket" will spawn three trolls.

Was able to kill three of them (Hunter 51 BM spec)

Just did this quest about 2 minutes ago, lunch dropped off the first mob killed. Ran and left the other two on the island.

I solo'd this as a 48 warlock. Very easy. I opened the basket and all 3 49s came at me. Voidy took aggro. dott'd one and put curse of weakness on the other 2. Killed them one at a time and finished with 1/3 mana and void still had 1/4 life. Never had to sac and feldom or even funnel life.

The lunch is on the island located at 84, 41. You open it and 3 mobs come at you. Kill one mob, loot Lard's lunch from him, and run from the others.

I can't see how the other warrior could not solo this quest at Level 53. I did this at level 53 and I'm protection specced. The three Level 49 trolls were wondering why I wasn't doing any damage. When I told them I was Prot specced, they felt sorry for me and handed me Lard's lunch. They even got a canoe and ferried me back to the shore so I won't get tired.
What nice trolls they are.

Your mileage may vary, but here's what I did to solo this as a 47 druid (and druids are good at this)...

Run away.

One of them keeps following you out into the water. After the other two stop chasing, fight the one that kept following. When he's dead, you've completed the quest.

When you go to the pincic basket which should be all the way north from Raventusk Village, (yes you do have to swim across to the island there) you will find Lard's Picnic Basket there. Don't think its that easy because once you open it, 3 LV49 Vilebranch Kidnappers will come out. All you have to do is kill one of them (perferably the first mob you kill) and loot Lard's Lunch from it and you are done.

What I did was use Imitaditing Shout when I got the necessary rage and fired it to send at least one of them running. With only 2 on me now, I managed to take enough damage to kill one of them and loot it before I died. Just make sure you have good gear (at least all green with Stamina and Strength) and at least 1 35 Healing Potion and you will be fine.

Also, what I got out of the Piinci Basket? Pretty good stuff. Here is the list:
Grinning Axe of the Wolf
Chromite Legplates
1 Moonberry Juice
4 Superior Healing Potion

Solo as 46 Shaman. Anyone can do this!

1. Open basket and run
2. 3 Trolls follow you
3. Wait for 2 to run back and then attack the lone 3rd troll for the lunch loot!

Take care while doing this, I didn't know there was troll popping when you clicked the lunch on the ground (84, 41). Used Retaliation and I was fine.

solo,d at 52. prep with shield and touch of weakness. click lunch box. focus on first to appear to your left (although not the first to drop the lunch :-( ) pain, mb, smite, fear...stay on original target. Wash and repeat until all dead and your whites come out nice and clean.

So far this quest has sucked as a 45 fire mage. First attempt I tried pulling one away to kill, but they all kept clumping on me, so after two unsuccessful pulls they despawned. Second attempt I pulled one away long enough to kill it then ran away for five seconds as the other two chased me, when I ran back to where I killed the first one it had disappeared. No body, no loot. Was only away from him like 10 seconds. Third attempt I decide to try my hand at aoe. This mght've worked had I not lagged myself out with mad aoe, end result - I'm dead and they're all at 50%. Hate this quest, getting a party together for it now. Ugh.

I notice some people are having problems. I've killed these three guys about 7 times now (each) and none of them have ever dropped the lunch box. What the hell?

I'm a level 45 lock and I just howl of terrord the three and droped one, looted, and RAN LIKE HELL!

was extremely easy...I wasn't anywhere near critical health...for chore.

I just opened tha basket so they spawned, i swam away until 2/3 ran back and i only fought one. Luckily it was he who had the lunch ^^

I died three times doing this, as a lvl 49 Rogue. The best way I found was to open the basket then run to the southwestern shore (the closet obviously), doing this left me with one guy, who was easy enough to kill and he dropped the lunch for me.

Did it very easy as a 47 troll shadow priest ... buffed up used levitate opened the box and pulled them out on sea. SwP' ed one of them to keep aggro longer and lost the other two.

First time I tried this, level 50 hunter, was a surprise to see the three trolls spawn. Recovered enough to kill them all.. then healed.

But I thought they had interupted me picking up the lunch...and since they were dead, should just pick up the lunch again....WRONG ...DEAD.

Checked this site AFTER and found out that the mobs dropped the lunch...so then killed one, freeze trapped one...and drew another out in the water to kill..feigned n looted the one killed in the water.

The mobs that attacked me were Vilebranch Kidnappers, lvl49. Not Vilebranch Ambusher.

One of them dropped the Lard's Lunch, the others dropped nothing.

Eesy quest if you know how to crowd controll as a mage.

I did this today (Sept 12/05) as a 50 hunter, got pet on 2, moved away from 3rd mob spawn spot and feigned. Stood up, and started laying a beating on remaining 2. Healed pet as I sent him in after the 3rd, put out a frost trap prior to it just in case. And 3rd went down .. fun fight :)

Solo'd as a 48 warlock, simple really did not even use a soul stone, fear one DOT one nuke the other then finish the last one off, found the lunch on the body of the last one.

I actually thought it was fun to do this quest brand new without any spoilers out there. I almost even soloed it accidentally (me 49, they 49x3) w/o knowing at all what was going to happen (the skellies around the basket were a bit of a tipoff ....) Note that there are a number of ways to screw this up if you are a dumb ass like me:
1) The whole thing will reset quite quickly if you fail to kill all three in a row; tactics like trying to feign or vanish after killing 2 of 3 and being too low to take the third right away will not work
2) DO NOT touch that picnic basket again after you kill the 3 - they'll spawn right all over away even though three corpses are on the ground, one of whom has The Lunch. Ask me why I know that :-)
One thing about the reward: the items are not soulbound, they're Bind on Equip! Woo!

Solo'd as a level 45 mage. Kite one out to sea until the others run back, then kill it. Used evocation and a healing pot (mostly due to getting banged by three of em while initially running).

This has nothing to do with Vilebranch Ambushers ... It's Vilebranch kidnappers .. and they are L49 x 3.

I did it solo as a 49 Druid w/ Feral gear and a Resto build... It was challenging, but not hard.

Even though its been posted, this is really the most common thing to be checking for, so I'll reiterate:

Location is 84,40.

On the Hinterlands map, there's two islands off the coast, its the Northern one.

Anyway, soloed this as a lvl 49 priest. Went Shadowform, put on a sheild, put Devouring Plague on one guy and fought another. He died, I looted, got the lunch, and ran (swam) away from the other guys. Trued using Psychic Scream, but lag wouldn't let me cast. I was still able to swim away faster than the two remaining guys and get out alive (barely.)

Great rewards. I wish this were repeatable so I could see what I get next. Wanted to AH both the greens, but one was so good I had to use it myself.

Just did this as 48 Warrior, used Mind Control Cap right off and killed one. Then killed the other, used health pot and shrink ray to kill the last one, had 93 hp left.

you can ealsiy kil one, grab the lunch and run.

Since some wonder if the lunch drops from the first one, here is the answer to your question. I did the quest and looted after starting to kill the next mob, so i killed the 1st one, no loot... 2nd, lard's lunch.
So i asked my brother and his friend to do the same
my brother had it with the 1st one he killed and his friend got 2nd again, but i've heard it can also drop of the 3th one.

So the answer to your question: it can drop of the first one, te second one, or the last one you kill.

LOL, Soloed with 58 Rouge with Combat\Swords Talens
Used Blade Flurry+Slice and Dise killed all three of them left with half of Health bar.
Warning!
Do not open the Launch box again they will respawn again, but killed them again.

Lion pet. Spec'd with Beast Mastery. Had Well Fed with +12 stam and Rumsey Rum Black Label for +15 stam.

After clicking item, pet attacked the first one to hit me. Hit Bestial Wrath. The other two worked on me. Took a healing potion when low. Wasn't enough. When I was low again on health, Feign Death. Came back and Assisted pet using Rapid Fire. Me and pet both almost died, but finished. Tried it twice before I was successful.

Worth doing as I got a 14 slot bag & some other goodies as reward.

Since this quest is on a tiny speck of an island it is uniquely geared toward casters who can trick mobs into the water and kill them one by one. Unfortunately for us Hunters it's not so simple. Three lvl 49 mobs spawn after opening the basket.

I just solo'd this quest with my Tauren Hunter at level 48 (health 2680). I suspect you could solo at lvl 47 if you're fully buffed up. 46 is pushing it. It takes some strategy either way.

In my case I attacked one mob with my cat while the other two kept their attention on me. After he was dead I ordered my cat to attack the other two to force their attention on him (use growl). With nobody hitting me I bandaged and healed both of us. Then we were able to take them out with no problem. The key is killing off one quickly and switching agro to whom ever has the most hit points.

Important note: I found the loot on the last kill so it may not work to kill just one and run.

Just did this quest, with little trouble.

The three trolls spawn, all lvl 49. Use intimidating shout, sent the other 2 trolls packing for a little. When they returned, I equipped the Blade of the Titans, and hit retailiation and began chewing them up. Once retaliation was gone, I re-equipped my two swords and laid waste to the other two. Had to use a potion, kept health above 20% incase they had execute. Finished fight with 3 corpses in front of me, and 32% of my health left.

I easily soloed this as a level 45 Undead Rogue, had half my health left while the 3 enemies were almost "red" for me...

Extremely easy as a lvl 46 Hunter.

TIP TO HUNTERS: Go to the island at (84, 41) and open the lunch box. The trolls will attack. Feign death and they will go to seperate parts of the island. Kill one at a time, and if they all agro just feign death again after u have killed one. Easy as pie.

Don't know what spec those other rogues who had problems were, but it wasn't too hard for me.

Blind one of them immediately, use Evasion and start building up combo points with Sinister Strike (good idea to move the two you're fighting away from the blinded one). I waited until I had 5 combo points then I used Slice and Dice and Blade Flurry (hence the moving away). By now one should be down, (think i used a healing potion at this point) and the other two should have a sizeable chunk taken off their HP. Once you get down to the last one, if you need some health back just Gouge/Bandage.

Also, if you can't kill all three, you could always Vanish and then take out the last one. Hope this helps

I solo'd this as a level 45 warlock.

Grabbed the basket, swam to shore immediately after they spawned CoEx'ing them to keep them back and DoTing one of them to give him more aggro than the others. Eventually two peel'd back and the previously DoT'd one kept pursuing so I charm'd him with my succubus heal'd up and killed him. Luck just so has it he dropped Lard's Lunch so I didn't have to go back to kill the other two but if I did it wouldn't of been difficult as I could pull them individually into the water now that they had dropped aggro.

As a 49 fury warrior, I opened the basket, turned, popped retalliation and went afk to get a drink...

Very, very simple for a warrior. I did not need any pots or buffs

Easily soloed these two trolls as a lvl 50 Shaman, AoE shamans ftw :) took em both down in like 15-20sec.

I don't know how any hunter would need to use a potion, or even bandage yourself. This quest is VERY easy. I soloed it with a 47 hunter. Opened the box, FD right away, and had my pet tank all three at once. Took them out without even loosing a quarter of my health, and my pet was perfectly fine as well with about 85% after killing all three. Granted, being a BM spec helped, but if done correctly, you won't have any trouble as a hunter.

This method works well for a Warrior, worked great for me at lvl 47. Only difference is I never switched out my Executioner's Cleaver; just used it the whole time to mow em down.

I'm level 50.I died 3 times so far and still havn't completed the quest.I killed one troll before I got killed.When I came back a minute later to try again,all three trolls were back again.Oh,and the troll I did kill had nothing on him.I had pots and other skills I used(evasion,etc) but still no match for 3 trolls. What am I doing wrong? Why can't I solo this like the level 47-49s who soloed this?

Found on small island at 84, 41. soloed as 46 Lock w/imp. Open lunch box on the back side of island. Mobed by 3x49lvl mobs. Imp died I killed one and looted the lunch from the drop.

yes just a tip, ONE OF THE KIDNAPPERS DROPS THE LUNCH. if you kill the 3 origonal kidnappers, dont go try and open the lunchbox again. you will be jump by 3 fresh kidnappers each time you do this.

The island is at the opposite end of the shoreline not far out. Once you click on the basket three Vilebranch Ambushers will spawn. Once dead one had lards lunch rest dropped nothing.

You don't have to kill all of them, just kill one and incapacitate the others, then check the corpse :) worked for me

I did this on my 48 rogue with engineering solo, here is how:

1) When they begin running up, vanish immediately and sap the first one, then, as the third one is running up from the far end, gnomish net-o-matic it.
2) Quickly deal with the second one (using a Thistle Tea), and then proceed to the netted one (which probably broke now).
3) At this point the sap broke, so I used Gnomish Mind Control Cap and easily took out the third one. Then I simply finished the last one - all without using a pot, ands only using the vanish cooldown.

quite easy tho.

Took the basket, thinking this was a joke (where the hell is the enemies)
Then one spawned, easy.. another.. damn.. and a third.. %^&*.
Focused on one, started retaliation, needed one potion tho. used intamidating shout, and killed the first. Got the lunch (lucky i guess) and swimmed away.

I did solo this at 45 as a shadow priest, though I did die in the process. I did however get lards lunch from one of the corpses before I died. Like everyone else is saying, kill one, loot it and skip the rest

I went there, did open the box, they came, sent the VW to pick 'em up, focused on one, killed him, focused the other one, killed him, focused the 3rd one, killed him. me ? 100% life, 30% mana. VW 30% life, 50% mana. ... This was a very easy quest for a 'lvl 52 Lock :)) they are lvl 49. non-elites.

solo'd as lv51 shaman. dropped stoneclaw totem to keep two busy, hit one and put flame shock on them. swam away from the island until just one followed and finished them in the water.

Pretty reasonable solo on a 50 BM hunter. Trapped one, split tanked the other two and feigned out, split tank the remaining two when the trap broke, intimidated and killed the last one. Did drop a heal on my pet but it didn't need it. My health was never in danger.

That said, the advice below is key. You don't need to kill all three of them (49 non-elites), just one. Focus one and aggro dump or run away. Come back and loot. Victory.

Was able to solo as 46 holy priest - bubble and open box, fear then get across the water to the near bank. Two troll kidnappers will go back leaving you with one. Kill him and loot Lard's lunch. Thanks for the help everyone and keep posting those tips!

Had Band of the Unicorn and Journeyman's Backpack drop from opening Lard's Special Picnic Basket... along with some mana pots!

On my lvl 47 Ele shammy, solo: drop Stoneclaw for the taunt. Pick one and Frost Shock it, kite it into the water. When the others kill your Stoneclaw, drop Earthbind. Continue frost hocking the one mob. Let the other two evade - may require dropping Earthbind again (I did). Kill the kited mob and give Lard his lunch back.
