You can do this quest after you complete the Scepter of the Shifting Sands. There will be an npc next to the Scarab Gong in southern Silithus after the Gong has been rung by someone. There is a legendary mount as well if you ring the gong within 10 hours of the gates opening, but 99.9% of people won't get that.

Is it possible to do the quest line and get the epic weapons still? Or is it over once AQ gates are open?

I'm getting close to completing this quest line. I already use Gavel of Infinite Wisdom with a healing enchant as a weapon switch, so I was going to go after the +damage dagger. After looking at the rewards again I see that the spell damage weapon is a sword and therefore only warlocks, mages and paladins can benefit from that reward. I guess us priests, druids and elemental shaman are our of luck on this one if you want something with +spell damage. I guess I will get 20 spirit on the fang and use it with Tidesippe for a spirit switch.

Yes, you can still get the weapons.

I got the healing dagger a weeks time ago on Maghteridon, and we opened the gates ages past.

This whole queest line starts from an NPC in Cenarion Hold who directs you to discover the Brood of Nozdormu in the valley of time in tanaris. once you do that, you're directed to loot the head of the broodlord lashlayer in Blackwing Lair(beware there's only one head per kill-don't piss anyone off by looting it early). after that, you must farm 200 silithid shards, then are directed to anachronos in the valley of time to learn more. It's a long, LONG quest line with stuff that's only doable by a high level raid guild. Don't expect to get this stuff from a pug.
