Despite being elite, you can do this quest solo easily (and at an early level), as long as you have some patience. Around Frostwhisper Gorge, you should find two or three crystal formations just outside aggro range of the elite giants (usually visible from the road). Grab crystals from those formations, then wait on a respawn. You can also follow high level Alliance players into the gorge, as they have a reputation quest to kill the giants. Just use the crystal formations that they conveniently clear away for you.

This is an easy quest in the upper 50's, because this place is farmed a lot, and even if it's not clear, it's extremely easy to get these without aggro.

The quest is worth 6600 xp. Here are the locations for some of the Shards (courtesy bugnaz):

North side of the Bridge:
59,64 (down the main pathway into the chasm).
61,65 (to the South-West of the start of the bridge as you head South).
63,66 (to the South-East of the start of the bridge as you head South).

South side of the Bridge:
60,71 (to the South-West after you have crossed the bridge heading South. There is a level 59 "Rabid Shardtooth" bear to deal with here).
61,72 (to the South-West after you have crossed the bridge heading South. There is a Frostmaul Giant here but it is grab-able).

From either side of the Bridge:
65,70 (from heading South before you cross the bridge, head clockwise around the chasm staying away from the edge).
(Or: After you have crossed the bridge heading South - to the North-East. Head Anti-clockwise around the chasm staying away from the edge. Takes some getting to but would be quicker than a fight, death and re-spawn).

Many of the players here are right. You can get four walking down into the gorge without encountering a single giant, but with some real luck you can actually down a giant as low as 56 solo if you are a pet class. Barely.

Solo'd as a 57 rogue with 5 lvls of MOD. Took some patience because you need to wait for the giant patrols to walk far enough away. I picked up all of mine in the Gorge. Entrance around 59, 64.

As a druid (56) I found it easy to get some that was too close to giants by rooting them, grabbing it and then run away int ravel form until you loose aggro.

The trick is to be as close to the crystal as possible without aggroing the giant and the rooting it when it is as far away from the crystal as possible. Keep in mind that the roots tend to break rather quickly, or get resisted, so you might have to try it a few times on the same giant.

this quest is easy. Yeah there are spawns that have no giants nearby, but you can easily loot the ones that are guarded. On my rogue i just gouged the giant and looted. (imp gouge of course). Im sure other classes can do something simular

I soloed this quest with my lvl 57 Hunter. I picked up the ungarded shards first, then singled out the shards that were only protected by one giant. I put on Aspect of the Cheetah, sent my pet to attack the giant while I picked up the shard. When done I put pet on passive an ran out of reach as quick as I could:). Nice and easy and it kept me from having to revive my pet all time.

Soloed as a 55 Rogue. I didn't die during the quest once, and burned only one vanish. You must know how to use your disctract correctly when navigating the minefield of giants.

Also these things are NOT heavilty farmed as stated above. In fact I didn't run into a single person through the entire quest.

Follow the road south of Everlook and eventually you will cross a bridge over a canyon. The shards (and giants) are in that canyon, with some on the rim as well. The best entrance to the canyon is on the north west side.

The giants are all 59/60 elites, not particularly tough as far as elites go but still pack a punch. As a 59 Shaman I can barely solo the 59 elites.

Stealthed players may have better luck getting these shards solo, or a hunter or warlock that can use a pet/creature to distract the giants. If you can do this, you can get a few shards off the edge of the canyon because each shard is only guarded by one guy. Otherwise, grab one or two friends and you should be able to kill these guys fairly easily and grab the shards on the ground plus some that they drop.

(I also had a giant drop a thorium lockbox that yielded a Traveler's Backpack!)

for the shard I first ran across. There is probably a better place since I had to use Levitate to get down (a stupid move on my part because I couldnt retreat.)

I submitted a GM ticket about not being able to loot the shards lying on the ground, and was told that it was a known issue, and that a resolution is being worked on.

First time I visited the Gorge, 273 people were doing the quest. My 60 Druid came back again and it was one of the easiest I've had to do in a long time, if you have stealth. If not, maybe an investment in an invisibility potion would get the job done.

Seems to me the shards on the ground fall into 2 categories: closely-guarded and loosely-guarded. Skip the closely-guarded ones (where starting the loot timer aggroes a giant) because there are enough loosely-guarded ones. I picked up 6 inside the gorge and the remaining 4 outside and didn't aggro anyone after the first try at learning the difference.

The Time-Constrained Player can't afford to fight the giants with a Druid. Of course I can shift out of bear and heal but it simply takes too long for the rewards, which in many cases are the TCP's greatest annoyance: nothing. Zilch. Zippo. Nada. So stealth it had to be, but then it was easy.

If you don't have stealth or invisibility, there are still several shards (4 or 5) that you can get to without aggroing a giant but they don't seem to respawn very quickly, so you might have to use alternate methods, some of which are excellently described above. Worth doing this one.

Ok, I can't speak for any other class but if you're a Warlock I'd suggest going here even if you don't have the quest. This is one of the best and easiest XP grinding areas I've found yet. The giants are Fearable, which basically makes them trivial. Just send in the pet to hold the aggro for a few seconds while you cast dots, then as soon as the giant starts coming after you just fear, and then cast your remaining dots, lifetap, drainlife. That's it, they never even touch you and with rested bonus I was getting 1200xp PER KILL!

Apparently these guys do hit pretty hard, but if you're a 'lock then you'll never know it because they'll never hit you. It's beautiful.

I'm finding this quest VERY tough as a 58 frost mage. No sheeping allowed, and the bad guys are immune to all my other mob control spells. Can't distract/tank them with the water elemental, either; since they're immune to everything he throws at them too he won't even attack them. All you can do is cherry pick the easy ones, but there is NO room for error and if you agro one, you basically die unless you're in a place where you can blink away and run. Forget about killing one, might as well try to burn a charging bear to death with a cigarette lighter.

Update to this: I found bugnaz's information helpful. Also, if you can slow fall, you can stand on the edge of the cliff at 64,65 and jump down into that little ruined temple. if you stay close enough to the cliff, you won't agro the giant at the entrance to the temple, and there are two shards you can pick up in there. If they're the last two you need, you can hearth/teleport/die intentionally and get out of there. (You can also just barely run down there from the entrance without dying.)

The interaction with the shards was not bugged for me, and as a rogue it was trivial to loot 10. Took all of about 5 min.

The Shards are in the Frostwhisper Gorge. There are a few giant down there lvl 59-60, but they are not that hard. I solo'ed it as a lvl 59 hunter.

Did this easily as a 58 Hunter. Got 2 shards on the South edge of the chasm, had to sic my pet on a giant one time in order to loot a shard and then got out of there before the pet died. Got 4 on the path down into the chasm (on the Northeastern end), all in plain sight and no giants guarding them, then 2 more near giants but I never got aggro. Got one more freebie on the way back up (saw it respawn), and the last one was on the Northern edge of the chasm, I had to distract a giant with my pet again.

So, I have no idea on the drop rate from the giants, but if no one else is doing this quest, there should be lots of shards available. If you don't have a pet to sacrifice or distract with, then you should still be able to finish the quest without fighting the giants, just wait for respawns on the path.

As of patch 1.10, this quest is also available to alliance... however, it seems to be bugged out, as I can't interact with the crystals on the sides of the canyon, and killed ~10 of the giants, none of which dropped the quest item.

Did this quest as Level 60 Paladin. Using Judgement of Wisdom the Frost Giants are not difficult, just time consuming. Killed 35 or to get my 10 crystals (note be alliance I could not collect crystals from ground).

Then after turning in crystals you get the "Cash of Mau'Ari." As long as you have this in your inventory you can hunt Winterspring mobs to get Ecko (essence)of them.

Some of the mobs include:
Winter Thistles:
FrostSaber Tigers
Furlogs, etc.

You then turn the Essences (Ecko's) in to get various types of JuJu's

For example the Frostsaber related JuJu gives you JuJu Flurry. Each use will give you 20 seconds of 3 percent increase attaack speed.

Unless you have other reasons to be killing Winterspring mobs I don't see this as a great return for amount of time spent.

However if you are still leveling up and get experience points for killing mobs then why not get the extra little bonus of some 20 seconds buffs.

Do this one as soon as possible upon venturing to Everlook for the first time. There are several good reasons.

First, it can be soloed by anyone, using the corpserunning tactic of stripping completely down and then not caring whether you get aggro from a level 60 Elite. (When you find your corpse, the only Durability loss you get is the things you were wearing or carrying at the time of death. Don't use the Spirit Healer and you'll be OK.) Actuall,y if you enter the canyon from the western side of the bridge-- a gentle slope, rather than the suicide plunge on the east side-- you can find about four crystals that don't have any Giant guards at all. Once you get these, log where you are, play your other characters, and return when the Frostmaulo Shards have regrown.

Why do this one early? You will be getting a large number of quests to kill the Furbolgs, and you may as well do two at once. And if you're trying to get the coolest non-instanced mount in the game, you'll also be killing the Chimera and Shardtooths-- which also drop E'ko when you are carrying this.

All in all, a good quest, and worth all the dying and running naked from Everlook.

It does not have a prereq as such
Night Elf Rogue Level 56 can get quest from the same quest giver in winterspring
Frostmaul shards in bottom of the ravine are now actionable by alliance
They are blue clusters of crystals like you have seen in the past in other quests

Soloed this as a 59 Shaman. The trick is using the Stoneclaw Totem (Rank 6) effectively.

Most crystals along the chasm on either side of the bridge were guarded by only one giant. Run up to the crystal mounted and dismount. Drop the Stoneclaw and immediately gear on the crystal. Once you're done, or if the giant destroys the stoneclaw too soon, war stomp and ghost wolf away.

It can get tedious, but you'll get it done

Did this as level 56 warrior today, charge in, intimidating shout grab the crystals whilst the giants were feared. Stuck mostly to the edges surrounding the top of the gorge.

4g 86s for completing at level 60. I didn't get any rep from her, but maybe that's because she's Orgrimmar faction? I don't know if they changed her faction when they started allowing Alliance to do her quests or not.

I might be a rogue, so it was easier, yes, but if you go in on the west side of the ravine, there are at least 6 crystals with no giants nearby. The rest I just stealthed in and picked carefully. I did have to fight one magic using giant, but they went down rather easily, considering their level. I would suggest not fighting unless you're in a group of well-geared.

Completing the quest opened up another:

"Cache of Mau'ari"
Cache of Mau'ari I suppose is in the series you must complete to open quests to gather E'ko from mobs in Winterspring. Still working on that.

finished this with my 59 Druid, was VERY easy just stealth your way around the 60 Elites, and then it's just a matter of looting them!

OMG! Just did this solo - level 57 gnome. Stealthed down into the gorge, got six shards quickly, got caught after the seventh, but vanished, then got the eighth, and was leaving the gorge when I saw the last two on the way out!
Whole thing took me fifteen minutes!

This quest is soloable as long as you have a pet or hard CC. I did it as a level 59 warrior.

You can loot SOME of the crystals on the ground without aggroing giants.Crystals take a while to respawn and most are guarded.

What you do is Charge+Intimidating shout and then loot the crystal and after that immediately run from the giant. There are enough crystals for this method (by the time your CC CD is up some crystals would have respawned). It shouldn't take too long.

Farmed heavily by others so we didn't agro anything. There are also quite a few shards up on the ridge.

If you want to avoid going into the canyon, you can find nodes around the rim of the canyon. You still have to avoid some giants, but there are a lot less of them than in the canyon.

you fakking liars. There is maybe 1 crystal not in the gorge and you cant get the ones in the canyon without aggroing the giants. I hate liars.

I entered the Canyon and there was 4-5 shards before I encountered any Giants just on the run down, no need to fight or avoid anything.

Enter near 58 63 (Dun Mandarr) and head down the slope into the giant ravine. This is far easier if you can stealth like druid to navigate around the giants. There are a few before you even get to the giants and you could just grab them and come back a few times to complete this. Above the ravine are a few along the ridge that are not guarded either.

The only death I had was an accidental fall into the ravine when not being careful. Also if you are druid on the ridge you can hit one with entangling roots as he walks away from one and grab it then just run to avoid aggro and restealth. Any other class that can stun, root, etc can do the same.

Took 15 minutes minus the GY run for the one fall.
