Head on down to the deep south of Darkshore, and you'll find plenty of Moonstalker Sires and Matriarchs. Be ready for the runts the Matriarchs tag-team you with.

I just completed getting the pelts, and the drop rate was 4/9 from the Moonstalker Sires and 1/4 from the Moonstalker Matriarchs. The biggest problem I had was the slow respawn rate and trying to track them down before other players got to them when they respawned.

So, basically, I had a 45% drop rate from the sires and a 25% drop rate from the matriarchs. Between the two it was 5/13 or roughly 38% drop rate which isn't all that bad.

just stay around the south near border of ashenvale where you can also pick up a rare spawn strider.

If you ever decide to finish the quest i suggest that you kill moonstakler sires. It may be a long walk south of darkshore, but it's worth it! (it only took me 9 kills to finish the quest =P)

Strange one this, i had 4 consecutive drops from 4 kills then nothing for like 30 kills with nothing. I was looking round the web to see whether i was doing something wrong.

The quest says down by the river is a good place to find these moonstalkers. All i have to say is BS. these were very hard to come by down south. Probably 2 of these that spawn every 5 minutes or so. As Dr_druid said, north of the Mynstril Ruins is an awsome place. I found my first pelt down south lookin for 30 minutes. I went up north and got the rest of the pelts in 20 minutes. So dont waste your time lookin down south when the place to go is north. I hope this helps

When I did this quest, I went to the Twilight Vale. It's just north of The Master's Glaive. I killed 5 moonstalkers and got 4 pelts, but then it took another 5 moonstalkers to get the last one. It seems pretty random to me, I don't think it matters where you kill them.

it dident take me very long but just dont give up =P its a fun quest........if u do start getting bored look around cordanets 37, 92 in darkshore =P there is a great foreststrider elete =D have fun on and at those cordanets there is some gd places to finde the pelts..... if u need more help...well i cant help u ...lol

This has got to be one of the most frustrating quests I have ever done. I as well killed about 15 moonstalker sires/matriarchs without finding a single pelt. I finally found an area that I got 5 pelts off of 5 kills.

For those of you with coordinates:
The kills were at 38,81; 38,83; 37,82; 39,80 and 39,79.

For those of you without coordinates:
Follow the road south until you are in the "Twilight Grove" area. On the right, you will see what looks like 2x4's that have been made into a railing of sorts and on the left is a "street light" and (usually) Grimclaw. Follow the path on the right (headed west) until you can't see the main road anymore and start looking for the sires.

I would recommend grouping up with a hunter for this quest as they can track beasts and shorten the time wasted on this quest.

The drop rate is pretty terrible for this quest, but you can at least improve the spawn rate for the moonstalkers. They are on a shared spawn with the forest striders, so if you go around just killing the cats, they will get fewer and fewer.

If you can't find any more moonstalkers, start killing the striders and you'll soon have a fresh batch of cats.

Look around grove of the ancients, on the east side of the road... make sure it says moonstalker *sire* or *matriarch*, although the only matriarch I found had a cub with her defending her. Anyway, I only had to kill 7 sires to get the 5 pelts.

Best place to find the 'Fine Moonstalker Pelt' is definately far North, just beyond the Ruins of Mathystra.

Searched in south - hard to find the moonstalker sire / martriarch. Not many dropped the pelt.

Came up North and finished the quest quickly. Along Beach you can also pick up another quest as well: 'Gyromast's Retrieval'

If you go way north past the ruins.. they drop pretty fast. Got mine in about 30 minutes

I could not find enough down south. One moonstalker is stuck in a tree and you cant kill him. The respawn rate is way to slow. Ill try up north tomorrow to see what I need.

I spent an hour just looking for my last one - no luck

The How Big a Threat chain from the same guy is a prereq.

I could not get it at all as a level 18 Dwarf Priest until I completed these and even then it didn't automatically lead into it, I had to speak with him again.

There is clearly a prereq based on the initial words of the quest:
"<Name>, your skills have already helped me"

I would like to know what you get from doing this quest. As in xp, money and or an item. I saw the post about rep which is nice but I am wondering if all this is worth the trouble. Thanks

I was trying to raise my unarmed combat skill while collecting these pelts. I killed many (matriarchs and sires), but only got one pelt. I came back later and ran through killing the stalkers with my weapons and got all my pelts within a few kills. Does wow take into account how you kill things? Perhaps I bludgeoned them too poorly to get a pelt out of them with my bare fists versus a cleaner, quicker kill with sharp weapons. I am uncertain as to how much validity this holds, but it logically makes sense.

I killed Moonstalker Matriachs and only needed to kill 8 to get 5 pelts.

I've killed 40 Moonstalker Sires and got 4 so far :/ And theres not much of them.. i can find one every 5 min

north of Ruins of Mathrasta(sp?) is the best place.

The absolute best place I found with tons of sires all 17-18 (and I had this quest done in 10 minutes) was 38,78 / 38,80 and 40,80.

You'll find the Moonstalker Sires traveling south through darkshore. Around where the bear Grimclaw is on the side of the road. LVL 17s and 18s mostly.

Did this as a Lvl 15 Druid, with a Lvl 16 rogue.... very hard to solo. Went to the moonstalkers south, path to the ones in the north was hard to get to. Anyways, died 2 or 3 times took well over an hour to do. Not an easy quest.

If you go south of the Widebend River those Moonstalkers will drop. The ones by the grove of -Ancients will take you forever... And they are 17-18 lvl

I definately recommend going up north past the ruins. Moonstalkers all over the place. I spent 45 mins down south and couldn't find very many moonstalkers. Up north is nothing but moonstalkers.

I think it was better in the north spot (north of Mathystra). The respawn rate is SLOW but there seems to be more moonstalkers to the north. Once when I tried the south spot someone must have been there just before me because I couldn't find any moonstalkers at all.

I am a druid and when I went after the matriarch, what I did was put the hibernate spell on the runt, gave the matriarch a hit of starfire, wrath and moonfire, then I shape shifted to the cat. Could kill both with no problem. oh yeah, I am a lvl 22 but did start this a few levels ago but kept giving up because the drops were hard to come by and the respawn was so slow.

I went to the south across from the Grove of Anceints got mine In 15 minutes as a level 19 Hunter with a level 19 pet(bear) have a knife with 18-23 damage +2 spirit +2 agil. All my armor has been upgraded got an orb in off hand with +4 strength +2 health ......My bear has all his trainig up to level 3 and he is set on aggresive he handles the Bears while I kill the Moonstalkers

well tbh moonstalker matriachs pretty much drop them every time because they are a difficult foe so i recommend if u can take a lvl 20 and 17 at the same time, go south just near the ruins just past grimclaw there are a few matriach spawns over there

As a hunter, i turned into the stalker, but noticed my pet was still out, so tried to dismiss her, but the spell cancelled, and now I can't turn into the stalker any more! If I abandon the quest, can I do it over?

Confirmed 61,10 (Way-North, Darkshore) for best location.

I focused on the sires rather than the ladies with cubs.
Solo'd at 17 as feral druid. Would recommend casters to group up just incase your ganged.
4/5 sires i killed there dropped the pelt (found my 5th earlier in the south).
Southern darkshore has the sires too but with a hidious drop rate, stick to the north.

Just a tip to those who use the map-coords...

If you hang around the coords -> 61,9 you will have no problem finding them, though, cuite low respawn rate =/

This part took me longer than if I would of done it with someone. I did it solo. You get the fur's from the lvl 17 to 20 Moonstalkers. They are way north of town past Cliff Springs and way south past the Grove of the Ancients. Tis good to do this part of quest with someone cause its usually 2 Moonstalkers to You. If you solo it plan on dying alot.

Soloed this with my lvl 19 rogue. Died once when i got 1 add too much. Else, it's quite an easy one for a rogue. I got all pelts after 9 kills.

Place: North of Ruins of Mathystra
Need to: Kill Moonstalker Matriaches
Exp: 1550 at lvl 19 and reputation increased with Darnassus.

Moonstalker Matriaches have a minion with them called Moonstalker Runt lvl 17. So if you can kill one lvl 19 and one lvl 17 you can solo this quest.

So I looked everywhere in the south for these guys and found them sporadically placed and only got 1 pelt from all of the ones I did find. Then I read on here that some were to the north so I went there and found a good bit of them at 62, 10. They also had really good drop rates.

I just completed this annoying quest, after killing over 50 matriarchs and cubs in the south and only getting 2 pelts, I went north. Above the Ruins of Mathystra (full of Naga) there are solo Sires and Matriarchs with cubs. Best of all, very few wandering mobs and no bears at all. The drop rate seemed much higher too, as I got 3 more pelts in under 10 minutes. None of the beasts up there were over level 19 either, green to me at 22. It's also much closer for the quest turn-in which is in Auberdine.

61,10 is correct as far as there being so many more sires and matriarchs. No bears either. Much better drop rate as well.
If you want to avoid the naga at Mathystra just run along the edge on the beach side around the ruins. Didn't pull a single mob.

Soloed this as a Lvl 16 Druid. Found 2 Matrarchs with cubs popping at an old temple near the Southern zone line. I could'nt handle the Lvl17 cubs AND the 20 Matriarchs. A single Sire popped every 20 minutes or so. I hung around an hour or so and got 2 pelts.
A small group came and camped so, fed up, I left to farm Bear skins. I chanced upon a White PvP Bear a little bit North of there who turned out to be Grimclaw, who figures in the 2nd part of the quest. I found many Sires there, on both sides of the road, and gained the other 3 pelts very quickly. Be cautious of the bears in the area.

For those playing Classic: Don't bother with the Moonstalker's down in the south end of the zone, just go further north around 60, 10. There are a ton more there. Much better farm spot. I also have decent drop rate here, contrary to everyone talking about the terrible drop rate in the south. Might have some trouble getting past the nagas though, they hurt like hell.

Definitely concentrate on the Sires. They seem to drop the pelts more than the Matriarchs.

I got all 5 pelts from the southern spot, close to the Remtravel's Excavation and The Masters Glaive. There is lot more of single Moonstalkers there (they do not attack in pairs as in the northen spot) which is easier if you play alone. Got all five within the third respawn, so it did not take long.

This seems to have a very low drop rate for Fine Moonstalker Pelt. -4/10 would not want to do this again unless I was doing the quest with a friend in the same room or on voice chat (disc/vent).

I only found 3 questing in the SW porting of the area, southwest portion of the Twilight Vale, South of where you do The Master's Glaive quest. I killed probably 35-40 Moonstalkers. So, I, a Night Elf Druid, ported to Moonglade, and took the flight path back to Auberdine, to go to 61, 10 like the comments suggest. It was there that the drop rate was 2 / 10ish and with the Sires. The Matriarchs are a waste of time.
