At the moment, if you fail killing Hand of Kargath (elite mob which pops when you activate the banner on Gorax's corpse), it seems that you don't get back the banner. So, you'll have to give up the quest, take it again, then go to kill Gorax one more time.

You can duo this without too much of a strugle. Taken by a 62 shaman and a 62 mage. When we took him he spawned without anyone using any banner. We had to kill him twice though.

Quest text states, "Kill Force Commander Gorax, place the Challenge From the Horde upon his corpse, kill The Hand of Kargath, and then bring the Head of the Hand of Kargath to Nazgrel in Thrallmar."

You do not have to kill Gorax or do anything with the banner. Just go down there and kill Hand of Kargath guy (he had 2 non-elites with him) and take his head.

Still had this quest in my log at 65...was bored late night and went and did it on my own. Lvl 65 resto shammy...did it w/ out too much trouble although it took about 10 min and 10 earth shields.

Done in a duo of a druid and mage, both at level 60.

It's not that hard, but a little challenging at this level. As long as you know what you're doing, you should manage it just fine.

Note that the respawn time is very fast - they started respawning as we were still fighting.

Gorax is soloable at 61 for a Feral Druid. Just make sure your cooldowns are up and that you have cleared out the mobs in the back. The head and hand of Kargath is a bit more difficult, not because he's any harder, but because he has those 2 adds with him.

One possible solution: Kite the adds away, and bring them down one at a time. You have to do this quick so they don't respawn. Once both adds are down, Kite the head and hand away to a safer area so that the adds don't respawn mid-fight.

Hunters should be able to solo this relatively easily by kiting, in fact I would say that a hunter should have no problem doing this alone at all. In the hunters case...

1. drop immol trap
2. pull first add over and whittle him down
3. FD once that first add is down, or j ust move to the 2nd one, making sure to keep your pet up with timely pet mends.
4. FD at that point and sacrifice your pet. Once the head and hand reset, rez the pet heal him up, and eat and drink for full health/mana.
5. buff up
6. Pull. I would suggest dropping an immol trap (for the dot) first, then pulling him over it. Follow up with serpant sting and keep that up on him at all times. Don't send your pet in right away. Make sure you kite this guy away from the original spot or the respawns will kill you. Once he is kited away from the spot unleash your pet on him. If your FD is up, then use it now to redirect aggro onto your pet. If your FD is not up, then start spamming your distracting shot and make sure your pet is growling everytime the cooldown is up. Once aggro is TR back to your pet, you may want to stop firing for a second to let your pet establish aggro, making sure to heal him when you can. Once aggro is established, take him down but keep an eye on your pet (not that I have to tell you that...at this point if you don't know that, you are not that good of a hunter).

The Hand of Kargath kept using a charge on me that I couldn't blink out of, regardless of range. No idea how you guys solo'd him :)

Yeah, I don't see how you can solo this, considering how many mobs there are around. The place is swarming with lvl 62/63 mobs. On top of that, the 'boss' has 2 adds. You can only sheep one, so if you kite the boss, then what do you do with the second add? I tried to solo this as a 61 frost mage, sheeped one, sent pet on one and tried to kill the boss but he's really hard. The adds randomly charge, and so does the boss. He hits hard too... got him to 81% and then he splattered me.

Ok, here's a small guide to doing it as a (fire)mage.
I did it at lvl 61 as full fire (all points in fire, impact is nice)

Get a health pot and a few mana gems ready.
Start casting a combusted/trinketed fireball at one of the adds, when it's cast immediately start poly on the other add.
Kill the add you fireballed and nova once they get close.
The add should die pretty soon.

You will also want to have a small area cleared to kite around The Hand himself (i kited him pretty close to the wall). Use the mana gem as soon as you get under 1,5k mana (very soon) and keep nova/run, fireballing him, adding some dragon's breath on your way. Health pot as necessary.
If and when the add breaks you should be a fair distance from the poly point and you should see the add coming from a distance so you can save a nova to get them both and poly again as necessary.
Blink out of his charge etc, ice armor on.

Got him on my third try or something. Shouldn't be too difficult if everything goes as planned.

Granted I did have almost the best gear available at lvl 60, it should be much easier if you are frost and can just snare him all the time and slap some pet nova along with your own.

The key is to disable an add and kill the other so you won't get charge-locked.

i solo'ed it with my 62 hunter. just make a clear roud up to thrallmar and then you send your pet in first to get aggro on the adds. you pull and kite kargath up to thrallmar and then let the guards finish him rly easy if you are a good kiter

Soloed as a 61 SL/SL warlock:

- Clear the area around
- Summon a succubus
- Pull one add with bolt/immo/dots
- Run back far from their respawn point
- Seduce boss before he gets to you
- kill first add
- fear boss right before seduce ends, then reseduce when it breaks
- kill 2nd add
- tap + bandage
- fear kite the boss dead

Maybe it was a fluke, but when I tried the quest it was *gasp* FIXED! Perish the thought, but the mobs were not just standing in the archway like they were in the past. I actually had to use the banner on the corpse of the 'force commander' (that pats inside the base of the citadel, enter at 48, 50) and then wait for Kargath and his pals to pop. As you can imagine, this makes it a much harder quest, since he is in an area dense with mobs.

Once you place the banner on the corpse of the force commander, the mobs will spawn (where they did before, under the archway at 48,50) but they now will run west into the small alcove to wherever the banner and YOU are. I wiped on this, (since I was trying to solo it and trash was repopping) and if you wipe on this you have about 60 seconds before Kargath despawns. So unless you have a soulstone, you won't make it back in time from the graveyard.

I'd suggest 2-3 people, head to 48, 50, clear the small alcove area west of the archway, then pull the force commander back to the fire and kill him there. This will give you a couple seconds to heal up before Kargath and the two adds run in. They charge like crazy, but you CAN outrange it. (30 yards)

Alliance version of this questline is a joke compared to the Horde one. Typical, no?

However, it makes more sense, plot-wise. Alliance version seems like it was hacked together at the last minute, taking 2 unrelated plot points and using them as a reason to get loot.

I just did this quest solo last night on my 67 druid. I had a hard time finding a group up til then and decided to give it a shot by my lonesome.

After clearing the area I pulled Gorax around the bend where no other mobs would spawn on me. Using bear form I was able to take him down in about 3 mins, shifting out to heal and pot once. I rested up, regened and then placed the flag. Unfortunately, I forgot about the 2 spawns with him. I died after a few mins and went back to retrieve my beaten body.

Luckily, the 2 other mobs despawned but Kargath remained. I rezzed, regened and again went at him. This time, it was a piece of cake, again only popping out of bear form once to heal and pot. Personally, I think he was an easier fight than Gorax once his bodyguards are gone.

Not sure if his waiting around was a fluke or not, but it seems if you can make it back to your body quick enough, you can have a 2nd try at him without the 2 adds.

Good luck and hopefully this works for some other people.

the point of the q is to kill 2 elites but in a different way

blizzard could of just said to slay commander gorax and kargath and placed them close to each other ,and aggro them 1 by 1
but this way is more interesting and fun to do .
by the way its not that easy to get to this q.

Tried this last night as a 60 rogue with a 60 druid and a 63 enhance shammy, it did not go well. The random charge thing that he does can easily tear apart melee dps. At first I thought I was just pulling too much aggro, but realized after a while he just does that no matter what. On top of that, one of my party members was flagged and got attacked by an ally in the middle of our third attempt. We decided to hold off for now.

Easily solo'ed as a level 63 frost mage.

Clear the small area in the room where the first elite is, and kill the first elite. He is snare-able so it shouldnt be a problem between you and your Elemental (freeze, nova, blink, nova, freeze, etc).

When I just did it just then, I didnt know a second lot of mobs spawned, so they came for me. I nova'd them all and ran away till they reset. I got full mana, waited ~30 secs till my Elemental was up again and fought them. Sheep the elite, kill the little adds. Pop elemental and kill the second elite just like the first. Cold snap for a second elemental and frost nova is great, and dont forgot you can Ice Block to send the mob back to your Elemental and the start the frostbolts from max range again.

I soloed this as a level 61 holy paladin , pulled gorax at the cleared area at the base of the citadel and fought him for 10 -15 min with seal of wisdom, after he died with renewed strength summoned the hand of kargtah. Judged one of the adds with wisdom , bubbled and started spaming consecration after both of the adds died continued with the same tactic to slowly dps down the hand and that was it. You better prepare some pots which may come in handy while killing the adds.

I assume it's pretty fast.

I've been clearing the area of mobs to prepare for the kite to Thrallmar. When I arrived to where he spawns, he wasn't there. So I waited. The mobs that I killed spawned before him... I dunno what's happening here. I've killed the mobs around the area twice, and no Hand of Kargath.

Edit: Yup, I'm at the right place. I've kited him before with my Mage. I'm trying to kill him with my hunter atm.

Why is the horde one harder.

Tried doing this quest a couple days ago - myself on a 60 Mage, a 61 Druid (feral), and two kind level 70 friends (Pally tank and Holy Priest).

A same-faction 70 rogue ninja'd the Hand, then proceeded to tell us he wasn't going to let us finish the quest - that he would repeat this every time.

Since the banner is a single-use item, if this happens to you, and you're trying to solo it, you're screwed and need to travel back to the questgiver, abandon, and re-take the quest.

Blizzard will do *nothing* about it "unless it's done for an entire night" (GM's words - yes, we reported the slimebag, not that it did any good).

The fact the spawned quest mob can be ninja'd is reason enough to take a larger group with you, preferably someone with good stealth detection.

As of the 2.3 patch, here is how the quest works;

1. Gorax is no longer kitable, nor is he soloable at lvl 61.

2. The Hand does not spawn until Gorax is dead and the banner is planted.( However if you are lucky enough to come upon Gorax freshly killed, you can plant the flag and the Hand will spawn for you too!)

3. The spawn rate on Gorax is no longer bugged (however remember that TBC spawn rates depend on the number of times a mob is killed that day, the more times it is killed the faster it spawns.

4. You still have to kill the hand for EACH PLAYER (which by far makes this one of the most frustrating and monotonous group quests Blizz has come up with to date.

Smartest way to complete this quest? Five man it if ya'll are 61 or lower OR hire/bribe/beg a DPS 70 to help you. ;)

Location of the mobs has not changed, but I won't bother to give out coordinates because people seem to either not understand how to read them, or are too lazy to get an add on that lets you read em.

There's no mention of it being part of a quest chain here, but I can't get it from Nazgrel so it must be.

I seriously need the Tunic from this quest so if anyone could tell me which preQs are required, I'll give them a sloppy wet kiss.

This is definitely not soloable for a rogue. :)

He has two adds. I sapped one, blinded the other, popped Adren Rush and Evasion on the main guy. He was at 50% when I had to vanish, and that's at level 63 with Naxx gear. If you can't kite this guy, bring a healer.

Getting the head is enough to turn in the quest. You do need to kill him once for each party member, and he respawns RIGHT AWAY, so watch out.

Solo'ed Lvl 61 Affliction lock. Patch 2.3

Just clear the area around Garox for fear room then perma fear and dot him. Easy kill.

The second elite is a little harder because of the adds. Here u want a voidwalker out. Fear the elite First, have the voidwalker tank the adds in the beginning as you dot them up when they turn to you instant howl of terror. Start dotting the elite as you keep him perma feared. Easy enough after the adds are dead. GL all overpowered warlocks =)

hmm I just kited the Kargath killed him got his head and finished the quest, didn't killed Gorax and specially I didn't placed "Challenge From the Horde" on his corpse. I did killed Gorax later when I already finished the quest and placed the Challenge From the Horde but nothing happened....

I'm a lock lvl 64 and i just soloed this.
First i cleared the area from some mobs(6-10 of them) and then pulled Hand of Kargath away from his spawning place, as the guards seems to respawn directly after they die.
Feared Kargath and dotted him while my cute felguard slashed the two guards in pieces.

Then I just had to kill Kargath without the two annoying guards, which was very easy.

Repost of useful info:

At the bottom of the Path of Glory approx. (48.5) He is located under the bridge and has two adds. You do NOT have to kill the Force commander Gorax to complete this thing.

Once you kill The hand of Kargath, you can loot his corpse for the head and return to Thrallmar for rewards. The q gives 1000 reputation with Thrallmar. As such it is a really smart idea to save it (the completion at least) for when you do not get any rep from running Ramparts and Bloodfurnace.

I must be the worst player in the world. all these people say they can solo him, I cannot at level 70 with a 69 pet. I tried freezing trap and all that. doesn't work. I pet's growl doesn't work on him, he always charges me. and both guards go after me as well. maybe I could try killing the guards, but if they spawn instantly what's the point?

Nevermind the fact I have done absolutely 0 damage to the main guy, and my pet has done thousands, he still goes after me. I used to be able to solo elites no problem. but this guy I cannot.

any advice to soloing this guy? I tried to get a group, but no one is on this quest or wants to help me.

and yes I know hunters don't actually solo things as they have pets. But in this case it is solo as my pet can't hold aggro.

This morning Hand of Kargath did not spawn until the banner was planted on Gorax's corpse.

It can soloed as a 62 druid as well. Kill the force commander without using Frenzied Regeneration and save it for the second guy with his adds. About a 10 minute fight. Watch out for respawns, thats what got me the first time.

This is on the Thrallmar side of the wall, at ground level.

There are two people to kill. One is the Commander, who is INSIDE the little courtyard pacing back and forth. The other is the Hand, who is standing in the doorway of the courtyard with two guards. It doesn't seem to matter which order you kill them in.

Kill the Commander, plant the flag. Kill the Hand, loot the head. Don't forget to plant the flag!

As per previous post, u only need to kill the hand of kargath and loot his head to complete the quest. I went in a group of 5, wasnt too sure how difficult quest was going to be. It was incredibly easy w/ the number of ppl. Only problem was that had to kill him 5 times for everyone to get the head. Each kill, the first person to loot gets the quest item. Wasnt difficult, just a pain in the ass to do it 5 times.

for the horde side this needs to be updated:

1. the only way the boss spawned for me was killing Force commander Gorax and then planting the banner . keep in mind he does spawn with 2 adds that are easy to kill

2. hes a elite with 83k life and he his fairly hard on cloth wearing casters tanks should be fine

the previous posts saying you can do all this cc to him do not work to try and solo him i tryed to fear and all that he is now immune

3. if you do die trying to kill him he does stay spawned for a little bit and then despawns and then you have to drop the quest and pick it back up to re get the banner to summon him

Force Commander Gorax is training Shattered Hand captains at the base of Hellfire Citadel, honing them to a bloody razor's edge. You must kill him, <name>, for his loss would be a mighty blow to the fel orcs.

However, that is not all you must do.

Take this banner. Place it atop Gorax's corpse. Gorax's commander, the Hand of Kargath, must answer your challenge if he has even a drop of true orc blood within him!

His head, the head of the hand of Kargath, is what I seek.
