Really expensive. For those who aren't 300 yet and aren't sure whether to continue, get a look at those mats and have one final decision because you will have to be dedicated if you going to spend like 300g worth of mats to enchant high level enchants

You can buy the Formula from Loreale WinterSong in Moonglade (48.40) for 2.2g. If you don't see it in her list - wait a few minutes, and try again.

BTW she also sell Formula: Enchant Cloack - Superior Defence (+70def on back). Also wait if not in list.

Arcanite Rod
Usually 100g on my AH, but get a blacksmithing friend and an alchemist friend, and the mats are...
Thorium Bar x3 (3g) + Arcane Crystal x3 (15g) + Dense Stone x4 (2g)
A nice saving of 80g on the Rod alone!

Golden Pearl
From Jaggal Clams or Big-Mouth clams, farm Murk Threshers in Dustwallow Marsh until you get one. Alternatively, only 2g on the AH for one.

Illusion Dust
4g each on the AH, so a grand total of 40g if you want to buy direct. You could do any of the quests in 50+ Azeroth zones to get green items to DE (item level 56-65), or buy the Armor to DE off the AH (make sure it's actually going to DE to Illusion and not Arcane, that means Azeroth items and not Outland, items go for about 10g each so it's your luck, really.)

Greater Eternal Essence
If you can gather the Runecloth (and it's pretty cheap on the AH nowadays), you can make Runecloth Shoulders, which should eventually give you enough Illusion Dust and Greater Eternals for all your rod-making needs.

Large Brilliant Shards
10g each on the AH, so 20g for two. You could use WowHead to look for quests that offer blue items as a reward, if you wish. Creating a blue tailoring item to DE usually requires Mooncloth (and therefore Felcloth) which is tiresome and expensive to get. If you do have some lying around in your bank though that needs to be used up, find someone that can make Mooncloth Leggings/Vest/Shoulders for you, then DE that.

*update*
An easier way to get Large Brilliant Shards if you're level 70 is Blackrock Depths. If you have the Shadowforge Key, you can run straight through the instance all the way to Lord Incendius without pulling a single mob, loot the blue he drops, DE it for the shard, exit, reset, repeat. 10 minutes per shard, tops.

It seems as though you have to be specifically on your Enchanter to receive this recipe. I first tried on my druid since it was so convenient to teleport her straight there. I kept opening and closing the vendor window for Lorelae Wintersong and it didn't show up. I decided to instead switch to my Enchanter and after 2 times of opening and closing the window the recipe to learn "Runed Arcanite Rod" popped up on the last page. Hope this helped.

They desperately need to just take this rod out and have Truesilver progress into Fel Iron. Getting to 300 was already hard and expensive enough, now I have to shovel out a minimum 60 gold just for the Arcanite Rod, and that's after I fit some old-world dungeon runs in to try my luck at farming up the essences and shards myself.

The Runed Arcanite Rod is fully obsolete, but the price will never retire.

Prices in wildhammer EU are total bs.

Arcanite Rod - 250g
Illusion Dust - 13g each
Greater Eternal Essence - 58g each
Large Brilliant Shard - 32g each

Total: 584 gold

...For something that is pretty much useless... I guess i have to farm all of those myself and probably buy the stuff for runed fel iron rod. That'll probably cost like 700 gold :/

As of MoP beta at the moment Runed Copper Rod is the highest level of enchanting rod required for any pattern, making all further rods nothing more than a level piece (if one chooses), nostalgic, or simply obsolete. (See screenshot above for a level 600 epic enchant requiring only a runed copper rod.

Thus, the following items are now obsolete.

Also worth noting that from my exploration on beta, it appears that these can no longer be learned (and possibly no longer be crafted even if you know them ahead of time); so if you want one for nostalgia sake you may want to hurry. I have done no searching on the 5.0.4 PTR, but can only assume it is a similar situation to MoP beta.

You know what's wrong with the game?

High-Level Blacksmithing requires a Blacksmith Hammer.
High-Level Engineering requires an Arclight Spanner.
High-Level Leatherworking requires nothing. High-Level Tailoring requires nothing.
High-Level Enchanting requires something that costs at least 130 Gold to make.
And then people complain about greedy enchanters when you try to make up for the money you invested.

Warlocksrock, you are an idiot. Enchanting is so expensive, especially when the mats needed keep going up in price because of CGF's. The price of our mats go up, so do our enchants. If you don't like it, don't buy the enchant, it's as simple as that. Don't tell us we are greedy, we are just trying to make back the fathoms of gold we spent on mats and leveling up our enchanting. If the price of mats and formulas went down, the price of enchants would also go down. Simple economics.

This thing cost me roughly 200g on my low pop PvP server. Crusader recipe cost me another 200g. Not to mention all the wasted gold spent leveling from 1-275 enchanting, at which point nearly everything is useless. And people call me greedy when I charge 20g + mats for a crusader enchant? Hah!

Generally speaking, its not worth trying to "Sell" enchants. When you have something actually worth offering such as +30 spell power, +20 spell power to gloves, +22 int ETC, then you can ask for 15-20g on top. Otherwise, your just getting the short end of the stick. For the sake of leveling, I always offered free enchants, provided you bring the mats. A tip is always nice, and 80% of the time, you get one. And when ppl do wanna haggle you on prices, just add up the cost of the mats in the AH. You cant argue that. Either buy it, farm it, or suck it.

But...the flip side is, being able to DE stuff is so awesome, that I just cannot drop this trade skill. No drop ever goes to waste...

So friggin stupid at how expensive this profession is. If i didn't buy everything for enchanting I probably would've ended up buying two epic mounts at once. And now this arcanite rod...

3 arcanite bars make one rod. And for every arcanite bar on my server, the price ranges from 35-40...
And then the golden pearl. Not only hard to find but costs 20-30 gold on Korgath as well.
And then the other expensive mats....large brilliant shards, illusion dusts, and eternal essences....those aren't as bad as compared to the other two components needed.

My advice for others, don't do this profression unless you know you're going to be dedicaed to it >.<

I've wasted a total of about 500g through the course of this stupid profession, only to find out I need this to even do anything useful from now on. While enchanting started out easy and kind of fun (I was level 60 when I started it), it gradually turned into more of a painful and expensive proposition, to the point where each item disenchanted killed me a little inside. I'm too generous, too... I give away waaaay too many free enchants, so it puts me even deeper into debt. While I understand that this is my fault, it's not so much the money that I care about; its the fact that I'm stuck in a profession that gives me absolutely no benefit over any other professions whatsoever, at least in terms of items only person with the profession can use (such as Engineering or Blacksmithing). My anger only increases as I find out that other professions are getting even MORE benefits in The Burning Crusade, while from what I've seen enchanters are still going to be stuck enchanting other peoples' crap, not benefiting themselves in any way other than a financial one (if they're lucky). I've been considering dropping this profession for a while, but I think this is the last straw... I just hit 300 enchanting and stupidly trained Crusader before realizing how friggin expensive the mats for this rod are. Someone is going to have to give me a REALLY good reason not to drop this profession.

Yeah you need an arcanite rod to make it.

Got the mats for a low low price of 50g but finding a blacksmith is a pain in the butt to make it.

Actually found a very nice smith in outlands who made me one from my mats :D

Enchanting is one of the most frustrating crafts out there. Opposed to BS'ing and similar crafts where base cost of items roughly falls in a general range; enchanting follows no such rules.. thank you freebie enchanters. Even the first real decent enchant (fiery/icy) is offered without tip only to level.

Yes, enchanting may take longer.. but tips are needed to keep the craft a profession and Not a gimmie. I can't count the number of times I was turned down for job solely due to the phrase, "Pfft, I'll find/know an enchanter who can do it for free." - Even with a humble 10-15% base mat cost tip requirement.

If anyone throws a remark at a 10-15% tip, don't be afraid to add a little detail of why your profession costs the way it does.. some points to hit:

- Rod cost (which DRAMATICALLY increase as you level)

- Material Cost (lets face it.. not all enchanters do constant instance runs or farm farm for greens - although it's a good idea when you can)

- Inflation (yes, if you use your mats.. that >>> DOES NOT <<< make you obligated to give a discount to your enchant/job! - base your tip off an estimate from the current mat costs on the auction.)

- Frelance work (enchanting isn't like an item-creation craft - it has infrequent customers to which you will find the need to charge)

- Recipe cost (not all recipes are found through the trainer.. you may need to do an instance - aka Uldaman, travel to new areas - aka the outland, via the auction, BoP drops, quests, etc.)

**One reliable means of making gold is to sell materials.. I know it sucks for those like myself who wish to keep the mats for level-up / alt-chr enchants / etc. -> So, sell the mats for enchants you cannot level any further on. (which isn't a bad idea)

**Charge for enchants - 10-15% isn't that much to ask for - the low level enchants mostly go for free.. which in all honesty is no sweat off anyone's back. - but a safe start is at least 150-200 skill.

My way of making money with enchanting is simple, disenchant stuff thats worth about 1g in the AH and loot the things you get out of it, then sell them on AH. Icy chill sells for 50-60g but the essence of wind only is worth 30g So you make a lot more money if you sell the mats instead of the enchant (on my server)

if u look at just the vender price for all the greens and blues that enchanters de just for mats to lvl enchanting to 300 so they can do thses high lvl enchants...enchanters waste the most gold of any professions. if u think its not the most expensive...try starting enchanting and one other...only buying mats from ah and lvling them both to 375...you'll find out that enchanting is (by far) more expensive.

so next time u say an enchanter is greedy...lvl your own enchanting to enchant yourself and leave us hard working enchanters alone

Earning with enchant/tailoring isn't hard.

When I'm in need of cash, I buy 2g worth of linen cloth on AH (thats 8-10 stacks), use tailoring to create a bunch of green pants, disenchant those pants and sell the dust and occational essence for 5-6g on AH. It works with other types of cloth to, 7g of silk cloth can be made into 20g of dust and essence, and so on..

Ofc. I wait for a day with low cost cloth on AH and sell the dust on a day with high dust prices. It takes a little patience, thats all..

Take advantage of the fact that prices on mats vary greatly from day to day. Specialize in a couple of those big juicy enchants people like, and then monitor the AH daily and scoop up the mats on days with low prices.

Then you wait for a day with high prices on mats and start offering people the enchants based on the high mats price. They will argue that you are too greedy, you quote the mats needed and tell them to go look at the AH prices and do the math. After that, you haggle a bit and settle on a price the customer likes, you fight to keep a small profit but just might end up doing it "for free", all the time you smile internally, thinking of the low price of your mats and the nice big profit you are about to make.

Works like a charm for me..

All professions are pricey.I have 2 accounts and the whole family have toons on both accounts. We have all the proffesions covered, and I find that Blacksmithing and Enchanting are the 2 proffesions that are the tuffest.(Yes Engineers I hear you, but you guy are pretty much in a class ALL to yourselves;;lol)Makeing money off of any of the professions is tuff (on some realms)It's all part of the game so have fun and don't worry about it....too much :-)

and to the above post it takes 3 bars and some dense stone to make a arcanite so it aint cheap to make on my server it could easily cost 60 g to make !.....

Granted Enchanting is an expensive profession. but then my Lvl 41 alt has just completed his mithril orders quests and that wasn't fun either.

Enchanting CAN make you money.. but it can also EAT money too if you're not careful.

What I do is I disenchant loot I don't want/ old items/ or items on the AH under disenchant value (Use enchantrix plug in for that info)

SELL ALL mats (other than those you need to level up)

When you barker your enchants tell them that you'll do the enchant if and only if THEY SUPPLY THE MATS and provide tip. That way you're not going to end up being haggled down and end up selling 120g of mats for 100g (for example) plus you make a nominal profit on the tip.

I've not started my Rep grind yet.. I have the recipe for Arcanite rod but haven't made it yet. I'm currently at 295/300 enchanting.. .. and have no inclination to take it much further just yet! ;)

Oh and one other small tip (which you may already know) you DON'T NEED to run Uldaman to find the trainer.. Go to Outland and Shattrath (if you have BC installed)All the trainers you could every want from journeyman upwards can be found in the library there ;)

it's expensive but it's a fun profession, My gear always has the best enchants I can do and my Guild mates love me ;) And because I enchant their gear sans tip they're always keen to run me through instances on a loot gathering mission :)

Enchanting is a tough profession, no doubt about it but so is other professions.

To counter being robbed of money from enchanting, because let's face it, how many enchanters go out a farm like a mad thing for green/blue or purple drops, doubt many do, so they go to the next best thing, everyone's best fried: the AH.

Pick up a gathering profession that you know that sells, that way one profession makes you money. All the gathering professions (mining, skinning and herbalism) make you loads of money on the side, and the cool thing about it is not much money is needed to level it up.

But for those just sick and tired of all this crap talk about which profession has the biggest s**t to handle the coords for the recipe is: 48,40 Moonglade.

The rod is another blizzard money/time waster, it should not be a requirement for fel iron rod, as you dont need it unless you were doing the top level enchants at skill300 before BC. If you're leveling up enchanting post BC (like me) then this rod is totally unnecessary as you can get to over skill330 without it, at which point you require a fel iron rod.

My character is lvl 65 and has 440 gold. My enchant skill is 320 and I need a fel iron rod to make the chants I want. So to buy the mats for the pointless arcanite rod costs 200G (greater eternal essence are 15G+ on my server), then another 120G for mats to make a Fel iron rod. That leaves me with 120G. A total spend of around 320G just so I have the privilege to make the next recipe. I got my tailor from 300-375 skill for less than that, and he makes 200G every 4 days from crafting the various spellcloths.

In fact I'm away to respec tailor :P

one to turn into a Runed Fel Iron rod for 320+ enchants

one to keep for Wpn ench like LS, +5 wpn, etc, those recipes when learned say "requires Runed Arcanite Rod". doesn't sound/read like any higher level rod will work?

I'd log off at her and periodically check if she had it. I don't know the exact cooldown on limited recipes.

why can't they make these damned rods backwards compatible? It's bad enough that I have strange dust, soul dust, vision dust, dream dust, illusion dust, small/large glimmering/glowing/radiant/brilliant shards, greater/lesser magic/mystic/nether/eternal/astral essences taking up bank space, among other misc. encahntign reagents(icecaps,righteous orbs) but I also need to keep every single runed rod because the fancy new ones can't perform the task of the old? I've got two bank characters @_@

Arcanite rod is required for a couple of the 285 and 290 enchants. Mostly the ones requiring significant rep grinding - friendly to revered with AD/TMH/TB.
Would be really nice if each rod used/consumed the previous rod and you only had to keep the 1 rod...

I need to know where I learn this. I'm almost 290 enchanting and the last enchanter I know of from Uldaman is doen teaching me things.
