This is the new kind of bar for cata, it takes 2 pyrium ore to make one pyrium bar, which can then be used into many sets of armor, for holy pally's and plate melee combined, alchemest's can also transmute pyrium using 4 elementium bars and 4 volatile earth

I find it wierd that it can be crafted both my smelting or by Alchemy, in which the latter consumes many more mats.

This seems to be the cata version of Titanium bars used in more abundance for high end Eng and BS items.

currency for some more though but not that much use for this?

When you use Transmute: Pyrium Bar it consumes Elementium Barx1 and Volatile Earthx1 and as a result you get Pyrium Barx3, But be warned, this does share a cooldown with many other transmutes that would probably be much more profitable, such as Transmute: Truegold.
