The absolute best way to get these: have a JC craft Carnelian Spikes (3x Carnelian, which are relatively frequent prospects from Obsidium Ore stacks, and 3x Jeweler's Setting, purchasable from a JC vendor).

Granted, it's not the greatest set of values to run from, but of 9 DE'd, only one gave me Dust (2), three gave 2 Greater Celestial Essence, and five gave 3 Greater Celestial Essence. So for those of you struggling to get the tons of essence needed to get higher up, find a JC and/or miner buddy/alt/guildmate and load up.

Plus, other green-quality gem JC craftables are nice for Dusts.

Interesting note: Carnelian Spikes are the only green-level, Cata-quality craftable weapon. Go figure.

On my server at least it is much cheaper to buy cheap green weapons from the AH and disenchant them rather than buy the essence directly.

Perhaps some money can be made this way as well.

Prices have spiked on Nagrand-US with the impending 4.3 changes. Greater Celestials now go for the same price as Heavenly Shards (~90g each) but when you can get 2 Heavenlys from 1 Maelstrom next patch these are going to be the next big Choke Point for enchants.

Best place to get them:
a) Buy cheap greens off the AH and disenchant them
b) Make them... I've only run the numbers for Tailoring but it seems that Deathsilk bracers are the best return on investment.

Using 2.5g per embersilk cloth you're looking at about 31g per bracer which will give you on average 1 lesser celestial. 3 lesser = 1 greater, means it's costing about 93g to make them.

Go fish the AH for greens!

I've been looking for crafts to DE, now that prices are insanely high, at least on my server.
The only viable sources I've found come from JC and BS. Compare the prices first if you don't want to lose gold. It might also be more profitable to transmute gems. Always double-check before crafting anything!

JC:
Usually, the best option is to go through the whole time-consuming JC mill:

Buy cheap ores (consider Pyrite Ore too!)
prospect
craft Items: Nightstone Choker, Jasper Ring, Alicite Pendant, Hessonite Band, and most importantly Carnelian Spikes
disenchant

Comparing prices is complex here, I recommend using an addon like OreCrusher2. There's no craft for Zephyrite (yet).

BS:
Stormforged Boots or Stormforged Belt
Stormforged Boots is the better alternative if Volatile Earth costs more than 4 Obsidium Ore.
Pricing: assuming a long-term GCE value of 40g, which is very low, dust of 0.5g, and the wowhead drop rates, you can go for up to 1.6g per Obsidium Ore. It's server-dependend of course. As an example, they go for much less than 1.5g per piece on mine. Always look for Obsidium Bar, they tend to be cheaper than 2 Obsidium Ore quite often.

If you're sitting on 4000 JP with no gear left to buy, do consider that 4000 JP will get you 10 Greater Celestial Essence.

First part:

Easy and efficient way to farm these up is to grab a friend (one of you needs to be a tailor, the other a designated killer) and a Potion of Treasure Finding. Set the loot for free for all. Go to the Verlok stand in deepholm, the place where the giant rock elementals are knocking down the troggs from their perch. Go up and past that to a rock bridge with dozens of them atop. The "killer" goes around and slaughters them all on one side of the bridge, then mounts and goes to the other side and repeats while the other who is using the potion of treasure loots.

Notes about the first part:
Usually from each batch you can collect 6-10 troggs and burn them down relatively fast.
Make sure you head out to the area with empty bags. Really the only thing you should have in your bags heading out there is the potion, and (maybe) your hearthstone. Everything should be empty, this goes for the killer too, as You can fill your back pack and 4 empty 20 slot bags in under twenty minutes. This also goes for the the killer, as they are also the pack mule.
They have a really fast respawn timer that the looter should keep an eye out for, you can get caught in respawns before finishing looting.
The money you collect off the mobs should be enough to cover any repair costs for the killer, and the money in the chests and looting will cover the second part.
Be wary as the killer of the troggs, if you take awhile to kill them they have a technique they can use that can hurt quite a bit.
Me and my partner found that it was faster and more efficient to have him go tank, as the vengeance and self healing available as a tank you can kill faster without worry of death.

Second part: With everything collected, take your tailor and make yourself tailoring greens to de. Any ore collected from the chest should be prospected and also made into greens for disenchanting. Then, any volatiles you can either save for future use, sell them, or xmute for truegold, which ever is more beneficial to you. The money you looted from the chests and mobs should be enough to cover the mats from vendors needed to craft what you need crafted.

For The Blacksmith:

Check AH... If Greater Celestial Essence is more than 40g each and you see Obsidium Ore for less than 2g each then you have a chance to make Redsteel Boots for a chance to make 3 Greater Celestial Essences.

5x Folded Obsidium = 10x Obsidium Bar = 20x Obsidium Ore = 35g

DE 11x Redsteel Boots I got:

12 Greater Celestial Essences = 480g @ 40g each
25 Dust = 16g25s @ 65s each

Total = 496g
Profit = 111g (I paid 385g)

Buy @ less than 1g75s each but always shop around first. if you see
Greater Celestial Essence for less than 35g it's a good buy (atleast on my server)

Not to mention the Greens at lvl 306 and up, if you see one at or below 20g it's a good buy.

Since I have both an enchanter and a jewelcrafter I decided to give this a try today. I had a bunch of carnelians in my bank (takes 3 carnelians and 3 JC settings to make one spike) so I made 12 Carnelian Spikes (green item level 316 fist weapon) on my JC. I disenchanted them on my enchanter. With the guild perk "bountiful bags" I got 25 greater celestial essences and 18 hypnotic dust from the 12 spikes. Thank you for this tip. Greater celestial essences are really expensive on my server and I never got many from disenchanting other level 85 greens or blues.
